We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Holy Smoke. We had the historic Nugget (number 7) cabin and very much enjoyed its rustic charm. It was certainly comfortable enough, with two armchairs and footstools, a bar fridge, tv and wifi ( although slow ) a comfy queen bed and a seperate bathroom. If you want fluffy white towels, expensive toiletries, and all the modern features of a modern hotel - then this is NOT the place for you! Located just off the interstate but quite a secluded feel ( especially in the cabins further away from the road ) but easy drive into Keystone and a great base for exploring all that The Black Hills have to offer!
Highly recommend!

Hello Guests,
The Nugget cabin was the place that captured my interest in 1972. The history here is so long. I am happy to share that special place with my guests! Happy you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again when you return to the Black Hills of South Dakota.

We camped at Holy Smokes campground for 3 nights during our visit to the Mount Rushmore area. It is centrally located to all the good sites in the Rapid City area. This campground was very clean and well run and had full hookups. The people take very good care of the area throughout the campground. We did have some wild turkeys gobbling and deer run right past our site.

My family and I stayed in 2 cabins at Holy Smoke for 5 days. We loved it! It has kind of a mountain feel to it, as the property is built on the side of the hillside leading into Keystone.

We enjoyed ourselves!

Room Tip: This resort is on a hillside, with gravel driveway. It may be less accessible to people with disabilities.

We wanted to stay in this cabin since it is so old. They had restored it a lot but you could see some of the actual parts still there. We love history so we thought that was great. Only complaint was it probably needs a new ac unit.

Hi Meg 1991,
I am pleased that you liked the cabin. It is our most popular unit. I will have maint. check the AC unit as I was unaware that it did not cool enough for you. Thank you for your business and we hope to see you again.

I made the decision to stay here for a 2-night stay in the Mt Rushmore area thinking it would be nice to have a bit more room than the standard motel. The location to all the surrounding sites was excellent but was disappointed in room because: 1) dark interior and very poor lighting. Bed needed a 2nd bedside table with lamp to make more comfortable, 2) no closet (not a problem) but the 2 wall hooks insufficient, 3) blanket quality poor- our bed had what looked to be a throw - didn't even cover edges of bed.
Overall, our cabin very clean, including bathroom. There was an spacious 2nd floor loft which we did not use. However, given one small bath downstairs, I could not imagine more than 2 adults in this cabin.
There is a great restaurant (Powder House Lodge) just down the road - had a great dinner and breakfast here and good value.
On our second night, we had very noisy neighbors (there are 2 units in one large cabin and share a common wall between and outdoor porch). Wasn't a huge problem but if persisted every night of your stay, it could be tiring.

We do have much larger cabins but not at the price you paid for the duplex unit. I can't speak to the blanket issue, but I think if one looks at all the reviews one might find this really petty. We have families with 3 kids stay in those loft units all Summer and they love them. Can't do much about noisy neighbors. Just be glad they were not above and below you and on both sides like you get in a motel.
