Benmiller Inn & Spa
Ranked #6 of 9 Hotels in Goderich
Reviewed 14 August 2017 via mobile

An excellent place to stay in the Goderich area. There aren't too many inns that offer authentic well-appointed accommodations, spa and a good restaurant. I would highly recommend this hotel as the staff are motivated and professional. The place hasn't become "plastic" or "ossified" in its approach to service. This is a popular place for weddings so it may be best to check beforehand if you want a quiet and romantic weekend where the hotel isn't overrun by the wedding party. Excellent setting and great jumping off point for the area.

Stayed at the Benmiller Inn and Spa for 6 days while on a business trip. Stayed in the River Mill Building. There are a number of buildings associated with this property so you may be a block or two from the office and restaurant. All of the buildings are older and in need of some basic clean-up and maintenance but overall they are quite nice. The River Mill Building has its own front door which you have to open with a separate key and there is no way to hold the door open so it can be a little clumsy getting into the building. It was very warm entering the building and had a bit of an "old" smell to it. Up the stairs to and through another then down the hall to my room. Thankfully the air conditioning was on so the room was nice and cool. The room was well appointed with a king bed, desk and chair, two night stands and a couple of chairs facing the spa tub. The bed definitely needs to be replaced, they've added a padding to it but it is still much too soft and has a dip in the middle. Nice fluffy pillows though and a decent duvet. The strangest thing about this room is the big half-moon window over the main picture window. It was covered in bug nests, hadn't been cleaned in a while and there was no covering or shade for it. There is no way to black out this room if you like it dark when you sleep. You'll also be wide awake as the sun comes up. No view to speak of as this room faced the side of the building. I used the side emergency exit to get out of the building without having to navigate the halls and stair cases and just about wiped out on the slippery wood decking. There were also vines growing down the stairs so making a real emergency exit from the building seems like it might be dangerous - especially for older folks. Ate at the restaurant once, and the staff was friendly and the food was quite good, if not a little overpriced. The front desk team were very efficient and friendly and even arranged a take-out breakfast before the kitchen opened. All in all not a bad stay but it might be time for the owners to invest in some repairs and maintenance.

This place needs some serious TLC. You can tell it used to be "charming and rustic".
Now it's just old and smelly. Dead bugs everywhere. Receptionist (Jill) was pleasant but distracted and seemed overwhelmed by phones. Our AC didn't work although we were told upon check-in that it was fixed. Hot tub "under renovations"..no renovations happening anywhere in this place. Brochure says "free Conservation area Pass with Benmiller stay". WRONG! Blow dryer blew the breaker for the entire room, room not made up until I called down at 4pm to ask why. On a positive note...the bed was comfy and linens were nice(one of the throw pillows had stains though (eww). The only saving grace of this place was that the dining was superb. Honestly one of the best meals I've ever had. Go to the restaurant but STAY AWAY from the inn!

Room Tip: Don't do it.

Small inn nestled in the Benmiller valley among quiet country roads which are excellent for cycling. Our room was well maintained with a balcony overlooking the river. Small, but adequate bathroom with all necessities. Comfortable bed and furniture. Excellent breakfast included with room in the dining area. Dining area would also provide an excellent dinner. Nothing else close by (within walking distance). Our main reason for staying was to enjoy the country roads for cycling.

Room Tip: Call ahead to ask for best room location since they are all different.

We have stayed here before and it is always a good experience. There are always a few problems associated with such an old property, but in general the visit is good. The service is excellent, the setting is wonderful and staff is attentive. My main concern is that the building is not mobility accessible due to its age. There is no working elevator and if you cannot do at least one story of stairs (in the main building it is a steep circular staircase) your choice of rooms is limited. If you need a walk-in shower there are two of them - on the second floor of a building with no elevator. The hot tub always seems in need of repair but I was told it would be fixed/replaced soon. The included breakfast is very good and if you stay for supper you will not be disappointed. A nice place to stay - but an older property in need of updating.

My husband and I were looking for a place to getaway for a couple nights that was close to Kincardine where my parents were watching my kids. We rarely have time to ourselves so we were looking forward to a nice quiet setting.

Upon arrival, the woman at the desk was very friendly.

We stayed in the river mill suite. It was a nice location and very clean.

However, our building and room had a very strong scent like an old museum. I understand it is an old building but it was quite overwhelming and took some getting used to.

The bed was very comfortable. We also really enjoyed our buffet breakfast.

Pool was great and beautiful location! Except, disappointed hot tub was under construction.

We went for dinner on our second night at the dining room. The staff was very nice and let us know there was a prom going on. We were ok with that until the music started.

We made the best of it. But the music was so loud we had to raise our voices to talk during our "fine dining" $180 dinner. We were a little surprised that there was no acknowledgement other than letting us know. We literally felt like we were in the club during our quiet getaway. The wait staff all did a great job. We just thought maybe the manager would have compensated for the fact that it wasn't the experience they advertise or what we were expecting on our rare evening out.

We went for breakfast the next morning and were hoping to sit where we did the previous morning overlooking the river but were placed in the front room where we were for dinner the night before and we were so close to the four other couples staying there (with all the extra space being unused) maybe still cleaning from the prom?

So overall, great location and well kept. But a little disappointed for the expensive price since these getaways don't happen often.

We were very pleased with our stay. The customer service was amazing! From check in to check out. When we first arrived in our room there was a welcome card as well as chocolate covered strawberries in the fridge. Yummy! I called down to the front desk and asked for some extra towels. They sent someone up right away and she brought cookies for us. It was a nice touch. The service at the restaurant was great and the food was delicious. It was pricey but worth it. They have great live music on Saturday evening that we really enjoyed. We also enjoyed the pool as well. We booked a one bedroom suite with a view of the river. If you are looking for fancy updated furnishings this is not the place for you. The decor is cozy and rustic. Both the pullout bed and the bed were super comfortable. One night I slept with my daughter on the pull out. We kept the patio door open. It was lovely to lay there and listen to the river run. Very relaxing. We will definitely go back.
