“Very beautiful cove, wonderful to visit by sea kayak”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2012

The scenery in this little cove is very beautiful and spectacular with white sands under the white cliffs with some shade provided by the hardy pohutukawa trees. Cathedral Cave is at the southern end with a pinnacle called 'Te Hoho' at the northern end. You can walk to the cove down a walking track to Mares leg Cove then through cathedral cave at low tide - about 1 hour. This cove is part of Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve (Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve). At high tide it gets a bit difficult getting through Cathedral cave - you have to swim - to visit the cove.

I visited Cathedral cove on the Cathedral Cove Classic tour run by the Cathedral Cove Kayak tours from Hahei beach. Yes, this is a much more expensive way to visit this cove, but it is much less strenuos on the feet and you get a different perspective approaching from the sea, and the tour is so much more with a guide explaining the geology, fauna, flora and cultural connections. The tour guide also makes you a cappuccino or hot chocolate on the beach to have with chocolate cookies while you explore or have a swim. Well worth a visit either by walking or on a kayak tour.

“Wild unspoilt and beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

Probably quite different on a sunny day but the day we went in the pouring rain with huge Pacific rollers crashing onto the beach, massive sculptural boulders in the sea and a waterfall at one end it was wild dramatic and wonderful. The 'Cathedral' itself, a cutting through the cliffs leading to another part of the beach is most impressive. The walk down is an easy 35 - 40 minutes with lovely views and covered with beautiful trees and shrubs.

“Don't miss seeing Cathedral cove/nice walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2012

Be sure to take your camera on this 1 1/2 hour round trip easy hike to Cathedral Cove. There are some steps at the end going down and back up from the beach but the trail is good. The beach is lovely and the Cathedral Cove is spectacular. Plan on spending some time on the beach and take sunscreen, towels and plenty of water or/and a lunch as there are no services when you reach the beach. This is free but if you decide to take a boat you can hire one or go on a tour. But, if you are in this area do not visiting this area.
