Me and my mum decided to go for breakfast this morning. It was 8:50am and we were told by the (lovely) girl serving us that breakfast ends at 9am. After a quick word with the chef she came back to us and said it was fine to order. After placing our order with her we could hear loud complaints from the kitchen from the chef. After a few minutes of his very audible complaining (we were on other side of the room) we decided to leave! We understand we were late for their breakfast hours and a "sorry we have stopped serving breakfast" would have been perfectly fine by us, but the reception we got from the chef was just plain rude. I wont ever go back!

Skotel is located in Whakapapa village very close to some great walks and just down the road from the Whakapapa ski fields. The staff are awesome and the service great. We had good food and has a nice ambiance. The rooms are well-equipped and comfortable although a little tired in places. The rooms have everything you need, kettle, fridge, hairdryer etc. We stayed twice on the way up from Wellington to a friends in Thames and on the way back down. The standard double rooms are bit small but good value. We had a superior room on the way back and that was a way better size for us. They gave us 100MB Wifi for free which we used quickly! They do offer 1GB for $10 over 24 hours - which I didn't think was too bad bearing in mind our location. The wifi is needed because our phone data didn't work properly so high up in the mountains. Overall I would say we had a great welcome at the Skotel. Its not luxury but it has everything you need.

WOW!!!! We were not expecting the excellent service and welcoming environment! The staff at Skotel made us feel welcome and valued. The room had the most amazing view and while the decor was outdated it did not detract from the views which was why we came in the first place. This is not a luxury hotel but is aimed at people wanting to explore the landscape and the wonderful natural atmosphere. Many of the walks are so close you do not need to drive any further. And Skotel arranged all of our transport to the Alpine crossing and gave us a great packed lunch! The view from our room was stunning and priceless. After the long walk across we returned to use the spa and unwind in the bar before a delicious dinner. Meals were large in size and just what we needed after a long hike. While there are no flashy attractions etc there is the natural beauty of our amazing country and the staff are more than happy to point out local highlights.Cannot fault the place. We will be recommending to friends and family and we are already planning another trip back this time with the kids.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a firmer mattress if that's what you prefer as they are quite soft and comfy and we prefer firmer ourselves.

Skotel is a superb hotel with heaps of great facilities: Laundry, kitchen, spa,... Plus the food at the restaurant is delicious. The staff is incredibly helpful in organizing your stay and activities and we loved our stay there to explore the whole area.

My husband and I went to Skotel in April 2017 and it was a good experience.
The hotel is huge even though the environment is welcoming and warm.
The hotel is located in Whakapapa village, right at the beginning of a three hours trekking to the Tongariro crossing and six kilometers away from a ski station.
The hotel has so many amenities mostly for free, spa and sauna, game room, and kitchen. The wifi works well, although you only get thirty minutes for free.
We found the whole place clean and tidy, even the common areas.
The hotel offers a parking place for the guests, a room for the luggage, drying room and when we came back for the crossing we were welcome to take a shower and pick up our luggage even after the checkout in that morning.
All the staff was very friendly, always willing to help and provide the best service.
The room was small but cosy, with heater and a sink.
We recommend this place if you are planning to do the Tongariro crossing or any another hike nearby and also if you plan to enjoy the winter sports at whakapapa ski station.
