“Good location & wondeful views - a good place to stay if visiting the Glaciers”
Reviewed 10 January 2012

I will admit to feeling a little apprehensive on arriving at the High Peaks Hotel. It was not what I was expecting from viewing the website. It was very quiet. The car park seemed rather in need of maintenance. However my first impressions were misleading and we had a comfortable and pleasent stay at the High Peaks and consider it extremely good value for money.

Fox Glacier is a reasonably small place - in some ways with an Austrian Alpine appearance. The location of the High Peaks Hotel was convenient in that it was a 2 minute drive off the main SH6 basically half way between Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson which is a "MUST DO" - a beautiful lake providing a fantastic walk.

We liked our room. It was clean, quiet, well-appointed with a very comfortable bed and plenty of space. The view of Mount Cook was tremendous and provided a outstanding backdrop to our breakfast which was simple and well cooked even if lacking in choice. It was obvious that we had visited at a very quiet period but we appreciated the friendly and welcoming nature of Marlene and Alan.

Our main reason for visiting Fox Glacier was to take the helicopter flight and glacier landing. This we did and enjoyed immensely and the High Peaks was a convenient and comfortable place to stay.

Marlene & Alan made us very welcome. Our room was spotless and had everything we required. Marlene cooked us dinner which was superb and we enjoyed the wonderful views from the dining room. Breakfast the next morning was also outstanding. The only disappointment was that the hotel was fairly quiet. All I can say is that people are missing out on a wonderful experience. Wished we could have stayed longer

Wow! What can we say? Words cannot convey the breathtaking views we enjoyed
from the High Peaks restaurant.

Four of us friends travelled both the North and South Islands on a 3 week whirlwind tour. We didn't book any of our accommodation beforehand and relied heavily on the free AA book that we acquired at a service area, shortly after our arrival in Auckland. Thank goodness, because it led us to High Peaks.

Having arrived unannounced and mid-afternoon, Marlene gave us a very warm welcome, showed us 2 rooms for our approval and asked what we would like prepared for our evening meal. The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean and the bed very comfy. Our evening meal (and breakfast) was delicious and nothing was too much trouble for both Marlene and Alan - both great hosts.

If we decide to visit NZ sometime again in the future then a return visit to High Peaks and the glaciers will be number 1 on our itinerary!

What a "Gem"
My wife and I recently stayed @ The High peak Motel in Fox Glacier whilst touring in NZ with hosts Marlene and Alan. This hotel very well appointed it has that very special personal pride in presentation which can only comes from proud owners. Rooms are excellent, we stayed in a superior room which suited our needs perfectly (room to move and spread out). Service was great and with a Restaurant and bar on site it completed our stay perfectly no need to get behind the wheel again just put ones feet up and relax. Both hosts are very special people, Marlene is receptionist, travel guide and above all a "Gourmet Chef" food prepared and presented superbly fresh and plentlyful and with a smile. Alan is barman, waiter and fence repairer. You have breakfast in the restaurant in the morning looking out the window @ Mt Cook and surrounding Alps Again what a Gem of a place to stay highly recommended for both presentation and value for money looking forward to returning for a longer stay in the near future.

Room Tip: Superior rooms near to reception are good value

Our tour guide had booked us into this hotel and we were not disappointed.
The staff (a couple) were both very nice and friendly. The hotel itself is almost brand new. The room we were in (#15) had an excellent, unrestricted view of the mountains near Fox Glacier. I was also very very glad to see that the internet was free. Dinner and breakfast were both very good. My wife was also thrilled about the jet tub in the bathroom.

Since this hotel isn't on the main road it is quiet and secluded. My wife and I did walk from the touristy part of town back to the hotel (a slow 15-20 minute walk), but it's not a walk I'd want to frequently undertake for meals or shopping. If you want stores and cafe's readily available you might do better to book something more in-town.

We were at this hotel about mid-November and surprisingly we were about the only one's booked in the whole place. It's pretty nice to have a hotel almost entirely to yourself. If I'm ever at Fox Glacier again I'd happily call this place "base camp".

I would rate this as our favourite place in New Zealand, the rooms were clean and tidy, the location perfect, but what sells this place the most is the the host - nothing was too much trouble for them, congratulations Alan and Marlyn you made us feel as part of your family with your hospitality and of course the excelent food.
We would certainly reccomend High Peaks to all travellers.
We wish you well.
