“Staff is great but the hotel has seen better days.”
Reviewed 16 December 2011

Over the past seven years I have been, on and off, to the Corpus Christi area for work. I have stayed at the Holiday Inn on Shoreline, the Omni just up the road, and two of the hotels found in Portland TX.

The Holiday Inn is great if you want to be on the beach (which isn't much to talk about) and go to sleep to the sound of the ocean (if you have a 2nd floor or greater bay side room with a balcony). The cleaning staff take good care of the rooms, and the beds are comfortable. Being well aware of the bed bug epidemic, I have checked when first entering a room and have never once found evidence of a problem, so that is a real plus.

The hotel has seen better days though. The elevators have a tendency to creak and bang during their travel, which could unnerve those not familiar with the inner workings. The place has a tired look about it, and has a very faint smell of mold to it. The exercise room has the standard equipment and it works well, but it obviously has been well used and starting to show its age. The business room is equipped with the standard office equipment, but is useless for anything other than browsing the internet. I tried to print out a pdf file but the system does not have the software to read standard documents. The wireless internet is a hit and miss. Occasionally, the transfer rates were hovering around 5M. They could use an update to the access point infrastructure to include 802.11 n. That and improve the service provider speed.

There is a pool down in the main floor, however, when it is open it is typically full of kids. Not exactly a place where you would go if you were looking to swim a few laps since it is shallow. The hotel seems to be a popular place for young families looking to escape the heat so it is a little more crowded during the summer months.

All in all, if your looking for a place to lay your head at night after a long days work, this one will do. If your looking for a higher end establishment, check out the Omni just a mile up the road.

Room Tip: If you are going to stay, ask for a balcony room on the 2nd floor or higher with a facing the ocean.

I stayed here on a five day business trip in November. Checking in was quick and courteous, the front desk staff was plenty helpful. Once you make your way from the lobby, it's evident that the hotel is pretty dated, it feels early 1980's-ish - from the elevators, to the hotel restaurant, to the hallways. The room was clean and medium sized, small bathroom with a bit of an awkward prep area. I had a great view of the beach, however, since it was November it was empty (actually the whole town was pretty empty). The hotel gave a feeling that it gets bustling during spring break and people stay here as basically a place to sleep and then go out. Not sure if there's too many other hotel options in this area, but it got the job done.

If you want a low budget experience, this is the place for you. The hallway walls on all floors are painted emeral green and definately wake you up upon leaving your room. It appears the window wash has been fired, since all the windows are in dire need of cleaning. Staffing is at the bare mimimum to run the hotel. My guess is the the property owners are sucking as much cash as they can out of the hotel without thought to their guest experience at the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms numbers ending in 01-04 are on the bay side of the hotel. No suites at this hotel.

As I write this I am still here in my room. Here for 5 nights. This hotel is on the water...Looks good from the road but not all rooms are equal. This hotel has been here since the early 70's. Renovations have been made to compensate this aging property. While some will have glorious views of the Bay and downtown skyline, some rooms look over at gravel topped roofs and AC units. Be sure and request a room with a view. But this property itself is huge. If you're lucky, you can get a nice cabana room with a great view and hear the surf 24 hrs a day.
People stay here from all walks of life including lots of locals. The indoor pool is used quite a bit. So is the spa if its actually open. It gets shut down a lot. It was closed today and the staff had no rhyme or reason for it. They didn't even offer to comp for that in any way. In my view, they are underpaid and limited on their abilities as far as hospitality and customer service skills. The restaurant in the hotel is lousy too. The bar is tiney small. They have a tiki bar outside called kokomos but its like closed in the off season and banker hours during the summer time. Next to the indoor pool is a game room. Great for kids. I dont know, if they'd just get a well paid staff with some great gourmet cooks in the restaurant and a new hip hoppin' bar this place could be a great 4 star Hotel. But for now I'm afraid its CTD (circuling the drain).
Apparently pets of any kind are welcomed here. Lots of people keeping their dogs in their rooms.

Room Tip: be sure and ask for a good room. Not all rooms have great views of the water, sand and surf.

Room was large with great views over the bay. Bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately everything in the room, with the exception of TV, looked like it had been there at least 40 years. The furniture was very dated and the lampshades looked like they'd been kicked round the room a few times. The bathroom was large but nothing special.

This is a great beach front hotel that has its own beach complete with jet skis, chairs, umbrellas, etc for rent. Has seasonal outdoor bar as well. Has indoor swimming pool and games complex. Great for families or business. Have stayed several times and never disappointed.

Right on the beach of Corpus Christi Bay, great views, well tended small beach area, and an outdoor deck bar over the water. Rooms vary as to the location in the hotel, stay away from the south tower, low ceilings , poor water pressure on upper floors, outdated worn furnishings, and a very dark parking lot by that entrance. Nice indoor pool area, kids play area, pool table, ping pong tables, shuffleboard, etc., but they give you bracelets to wear to identify you as a guest of the hotel to use the facility as the doors open to -yes it is a public beach- but no one is there to enforce the bracelet rule so there were a lot of non guests using the area, towels, restrooms to change, etc., seemed to invite some undesirables to take advantage of the hotels lack of regulation, so be careful with your belongings.
We could see welcome renovations being done, fresh paint, carpet, etc, it is a beautiful location for a hotel that is just feet from the beach, heavily used, and i feel they are trying to do their best. My main problem is with the price of the rooms as they are, they could at least have a refrigerator- mini- or whatever, in all rooms, make sure you ask when reserving, ice machine was a;most always empty. Friendly staff, good on site restaraunt, nice outdoor bar deck, will definetely stay again, can't beat the location and the beautiful sunrise from your room.

Room Tip: If you want to hear the waves, and be 20 feet from the water with a patio or balcony choose the caba...
