Centre Hill Mansion
Ranked #5 of 22 things to do in Petersburg
Attraction details
Reviewed July 23, 2018

This is a lovely house. It is owned by the city of Petersburg. There is limited funding for this wonderful historical site so its hours are also limited. Volunteers are keeping it open and we certainly thank them for their dedication. Be sure to check the house website for current visiting hours.
My husband and I toured this home on Sunday 7/22/18 based on a recommendation from our daughter. I agree with her that this would be a really neat place to live. Beautiful rooms, architecture, period furnishing and staircases everywhere. Our docent, Nancy, was well informed and a lovely lady. I look forward to a return visit. They have a Ghost tour in January!!
Do not miss this step back in time.

Enjoyed the tour of this mansion in Petersburg,VA. The charge is $6.00 per adult. My grown daughter and I basically received our own private tour. The mansion is beautiful and very interesting. It was built before the Civil War and the owners left Petersburg during the War and it was used by the Union as a headquarters. The series Mercy Street was partly filmed there and the TV show furnished it with Civil War era decor. It’s a very large old home and the tours are by a private group called Preservation Petersburg that are filling in the void that the city cannot. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and are all volunteers. Our guide had grown up in the area and had published several historical novels. President Taft visited the home and there are photos of the reception. You will basically see three 3 floors of the home. Certain times of year there are ghost tours at the home. There is parking at the site and town the hill is a great coffee shop that serves meals and a great bakery.

This antebellum mansion has a nice little museum in the basement. Knowledgable docents give tours on the floors above, too. The museum benefited from furnishings used as props when the building was used a set for the PBS series "Mercy Street". I haven't visited since the series was axed. Hopefully, they were able to keep most of the furniture.

Second leg of the tour is center hill mansion built by the bolling family. One of the interesting facts is that the pbs series mercy street was filmed here.
The view out the front door shows the landscape of Petersburg and it’s beautiful this time of year with the changing colors of trees.
