“10 Points for El Modelo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2012

If your in the mood for great Mexican Food you must give El Modelo a try. Their tamales are excellent as well as their chile. We always place an order for several dozen tamales during the Christmas season for our guests who drop in and also make up Christmas baskets for friends and relatives. That's one gift that will never be returned.

“Old-fashioned goodness and great value:”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

You order at the counter, and can eat outside on picnic tables on two sides of the building if the weather is O.K. Or, you can drive home with the delicious tantalizing odors causing you to salivate as you hurry so you can open those packages. El Modelo's portions are huge. One burrito is a meal for all but the biggest appetites. I love the way you can see into the kitchen as you wait, and I love the crowd that gathers in the waiting area, making Albuquerque seem like a small town. Delicious food, good prices, everything freshly made before your eyes. El Modelo can't be beat for a real New Mexican culinary and cultural experience.

“The Real Thing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 February 2012

We love El Modelo's and there is no other place in town where the Mexican food is any better. It's a great place to go and order your food and take it home. You can see the people preparing the food in a huge kitchen right behind the counter. We absolutely love the beans, rice and tamales there. You can order a plate of food or large quantities of food. We highly recommend it for anyone who lives in town who have never been there before.

They have some tables outside where you can eat on a nice day.

“Where one goes for tamales”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

El Modelo is Mexican food, not _New_ Mexican. The food is inexpensive, tasty, and probably terrible for you. I've gone here for tamales since moving to the state in the late '80s - it never changes.

“Even better than it was in the 1960-70's”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2012

As a former resident in Albuquerque more than 30 years ago I had fond memories of El Modelo as "the place" to get carne adovada burritos, chicharron, and tamales. I don't understand why we can't find good carne adovada in Dallas but we can't. I believe it is because the New Mexicans keep all of the great hot green and red chiles for themselves and send the rest out of state. While in ABQ for a wedding this past weekend I couldn't resist the chance to sneak over to get El Modelo take out for breakfast. Carne adovada and chicharron are not just for lunch and dinner you know. Just as good as I remembered them to be, and those were some excellent memories. Don't be put off by the neighborhood or the lack of a place to sit down inside. Go there for the food. Enough said.
