“Overall nice, but too wide open”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2011

It's a nice enough campground. The amenities are very good, although the pool is tiny. But the big problem is there are no trees, so it is totally wide open. The tent sites in the back are spaced out nicely, but because of the lack of trees, there is no absolutley no privacy. You can see all the sites and everyone can see yours.

If you have an RV, it may not be too bad. We were tent camping and had a terrible experience at this campground. Crowded, sites close together, constant noise and absolutely no regulation of quiet hours. I think I slept a total of about 2 hours. We had people walking by our tent yelling all night long. One of the most disappointing experiences I've had in a long time; a waste of our $27.

If you are Tent Camper beware.. I checked to see if they had any available sites on Friday, yes last minute and yes they did.. Packed up car got there and showed site I wanted.. They said it had been taken.. Ok next best thing give you a RV space for a big increase. Well no choice decided to stay.. Go check tent sites for our next trip there. Lo and behold our tent site empty.. Check it again on Sat & Sunday and empty.. so they scam you ,they have tent sites availabe but want to earn money giving you a area that RV's are right on top of you. Screaming kids running through / across your area and barking dogs that are left locked up because owners are off doing fun stuff. Then you have the mangi mutts in the very small cold water pool. I have never camped in CO before, only in NJ and PA. I honestly thought my expectations were reasonable, based on having only done pretty basic car camping. In fact, I was hoping for more "realistic" camping experience in the mountains. We were shocked at the close quarters at this campground. Our site was had no privacy and the family in the site next to us had several tents, one of which was no more than 3 feet from our tent pad. We might as well have been sharing a site with a large party of complete strangers. I'm used to hearing other noise from other campers and maybe even catching sight of a neighboring site between the trees, but this was ridiculous! We were with small kids and couldn't imagine spending the day and night less than 5 feet away from a large group of adults who were smoking, drinking and listening to the radio. The playground area was run down and the pool was basically a large hot tub. We left without ever unpacking the car.

We tent camped on a site on the North (just past the large RV parking area). Many sites had no close neighbors. Ours had a nice view and was close to the new bath house. There is another older one that we did not visit. Some sites are closer together and some have good shade. Wed & Thur it was very quiet, and Friday night there was one campsite that stayed up until after 2am talking loudly off and on.
The bathhouse was clean, $2 for a 6 minute shower, sink outside for dishes, small pool. The store clerks were very nice and had good suggestions for eating.

This past weekend was my first visit since the county took over the campground. Being a tent camper that likes having amenities rather than roughing it, this is still a good place to go. Bathrooms and showers were clean (shower is $2 for 6 minutes), ice and firewood were reasonably priced at the campground store and it's a nice location.

My only complaint is that the campground did not monitor sites for occupancy limits. This was a family trip: my parents, my brother and his little girl and my husband and I... 6 people and 3 camp sites. Whereas many other individual sites had multiple tents and well more than the 8 people/1 car per site max - this made some areas very crowded and loud.

I'll still return to Mary's Lake Campground, but I'll say that I've marked down the tent site #'s for the ones that I think will be more distant and less crowded for future visits.

If you own a motor home you will probably like this place. If you tent camp or have a pop up you will not like this place. The campground map is deceiving. I was in M127 the map shows the site right behind me to be a ways away. Actually their picnic table was 7 feet from my trailer. The camp sites are right on top of each other, there is nothing to divide a lot of the sites. Most sites do not have trees. Mary's Lake looks like you can walk across two small roads and get to it, but one is a major route on top of the dam. They have a lot of (to many) rules and regulations. It is very noisy and hard to sleep. If you are looking for a mountain camping experience find some place else. If you are looking for a place near Estes Park and don't plan to spend time in the campground this would be an okay place.
