“A Beautiful Mission in the Desert”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

This mission is on a Native American Reservation, and is beautiful inside and out. Much of the interior of the church looks original, and the outside is well cared for and pristeen. The tour guides gave interesting facts about the mission's history. I would encourage anyone to visit Mission San Xavier Del Bac.

Perfect place to take out of town visitors. The church is absolutely beautiful and the outside vendors are fun.

“Old and special”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

This Catholic Mission is beautiful and old. It needs more restoration work but it is obvious it was an important holy place in southern AZ. There seemed to be no admission cost but donations are appreciated. For people who love history, particularly of the southwestern USA, and religious places this is a must see. Know the statues are not as ornate and fancy as those in more modern churches or the older churches in Europe - but I really liked this place of worship and recommend it without reservation.

“History and Spirituality”
Reviewed 18 February 2012

The 'White Dove of the Desert' is the best example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the southwest. The interior is decorated by fully restored frescoes which speak of the culture and spirituality of the artisans who constructed it. Not only is it a historical site, but it is still an active mission church for the Tohono O'odham people. This mission church is close to the Tucson Airport which makes it a great place to visit even on a short stay.

“The Immutable Dove”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

I've visited San Xavier numerous times, both with the eye of a historian and a tourist taking friends for a visit. This mission has spectacular architecture, lovingly preserved by numerous volunteers, in a breathtaking setting. You can simply wander around on self-guided tours, but I highly recommend the docent-led tours that are always informative. Even if you're not Catholic, a mass in this church is a special event. So visit, enjoy, and light some candles for your Catholic friends.
