“Weekend retreat”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

We have stayed at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and liked the area. Its a nice secluded area in a residential and scenic section of Tucson. A family member provided timeshare points for us to enjoy this location. Thanks to Kara at the front desk we were upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite which was very nice and spacious with a full kitchen. The unit was very clean and had nice views of the desert and city. There are hiking trails nearby and Starr Pass Resort is walking distance, but not much else is close. This is not a bad thing for relaxation! The pool is olympic sized and the workout area is nice. We didnt golf, but the course is amazing. The Catalina BBQ located in the registration/clubhouse area is must for happy hour. The food was great, we had appetizers; Pulled pork potato skins, beer battered onion rings and chicken wings.....all large portions and are wonderful. They serve with many specialty BBQ sauces that are tasty and unique. The servings were enough that we brought back leftovers to the suite and had plenty for lunch/snack the next day. The staff was fun and friendly.

We took in a AAA Tucson Padres game, KIno stadium is actually close...so was wrong that its not close to anything :) There is a Albersons grocery about 15 minutes away to stock up that fridge.

If you want to relax you cant beat this location. They also have great summer rates.

Room Tip: Upgrade from the studio to the one bedroom if possible.

Wonderful to hear from a senior reviewer! Thank you for providing us with feedback from your stay. Glad you were able to enjoy so many different things that Tucson and the resort has to offer. Excellent choice on the appetizers; the potato skins are a personal favorite of mine. Please visit us again soon!

We came to Starr Pass via timeshare trade. The place is very nice (not exceptional). Though the room was a little "tired", the staff is extremely gracious and helpful. The property backs up on Tucson Mountain Park, with miles of hiking right out the door. Only complaint - the studio, or B-side rooms have zero access to the outside except for a smallish window that is shuttered against the heat. Wish they'd made that clear ahead of time, because it meant feeling trapped. The answer was that we spent little time at the property itself.

Room Tip: Ask for one a recently refurbished room.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I have passed along your kind words to the staff and they are delighted as well. Hopefully you can return to the resort again soon and reserve a one bedroom or two bedroom. These include spacious patios/balconies that I am confident you would enjoy!

Its a little out of the way but thats what we wanted. The rooms was nice enough and the pool and hot tub were nice. There is hiking all around. We used it as an overnight to go kayaking at Patagonia. But the views around there are beautiful.

We drove 3,650kms to spend 2 wks at this location with no previous knowledge other than word of mouth, guess what our info was underestimated, the overall staff were wonderful but we have to give the reception staff, Sarita, Trish and one other who's name escapes me but they were wonderful and even on departure begged us to stay and not travel to Sedona, sorry but we were pre booked or we would have definitely stayed. The casita was excellent the view wonderful and the ease to visit exceptional locations in and around Tucson was great. Having been fortunate to travel in many countries in the world Tucson has to be one of the easiest too drive in. Thanks for a memorable visit and treatment

Room Tip: Try for a casita with a desert view, great for local wild life etc

Wow! Thank you for all of your kind words! Sarita and Trisha were delighted to hear from you and we are all sad you couldn't have stayed longer. (We do hope you enjoyed your time in Sedona, another “Fantasmagorical” part of AZ) Come see us again soon and enjoy all of your upcoming travels!

My husband and I stayed in a one-bedroom casita at the Starr Pass Golf Suites in Tucson for three nights and had a nice, relaxing experience. Two things that made our stay noteworthy were the front desk staff -- Sarita and the young blond woman, who went out of their way to make sure the unit met our expectations -- and the javelina that walked across our back deck the first morning of our stay and let us take lots of great pictures. If you want to see javelinas, you need to get a unit that backs onto the Tucson Mountain Park. We were in Unit 43A. The down side of this particular unit was that the bathroom was rather old looking. We actually changed to a different unit the next day that had the city view and had been recently renovated, but unfortunately, no javelinas there.

The Star Pass Golf Suites is only a mile from the J.W. Marriott at Starr Pass. I took the free shuttle to the Marriott to use the business center, but there was a charge for the use of the computers. Also, the Marriott resort was too fancy for our taste. The Star Pass Golf Suites has a much more casual feel to it. Both resorts have lots of hiking that starts right outside their front door.

We never used the pool, the golfing or the restaurant at Starr Pass Golf Suites. For a vegetarian like me, the restaurant was not a good fit. However, there are plenty of restaurants near by.

One tip I would pass on if you're in Tucson -- we greatly enjoyed the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum but the tram going up Sabino Canyon was expensive for a four-mile trip. Not really worth the money.

Room Tip: Get a room backing onto Tucson Mountain Park if you want to see javelinas.

The great thing about this place is that you dont feel like your in a hotel. You feel likes its your own personal town house away from the city, and nestled right in the Saguaro desert. It was perfect. The staff was fabulous, and the bed was great! LOVED our views of the mountains and Saguaros! Plus a hiking trail was close to get even more outside action.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the desert!

Nice property, if maybe a little out of the way. Rooms were clean, the front desk very helpful and the beds are the most comfortable I've experienced. My #1 choice next time I'm in town.
