“A beautiful historical hotel with moderate amenities and service”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

My trip to San-Antonio and staying at the prestigeous Menger hotel, left me with much expectations. And indeed, most of them came true. The hotel is beautiful, located across the street from the Alamo, and other turist attractions such a Ripley believe it or not. It is situated at the heart of the turistic part of San-Antionio near the splendid River Walk area.
The hotel interior is also grand with lots of photos and other items reminicensce of the glorious past. The room was very nice. The breakfast was tasty and plentiful. The service was somewhat tarded. Room service did not provide shampoo and soap bars regularly during my 5 days stay and I had to go to the front desk to ask for provisions. The small room containing 5 cardio workout instruments lacked mattresses and free weights.
The bar was nicely decorated but had a poor choice of Wiskey and beer.
For those who need absolute quite to get to sleep, the cricking wooden floors can pose a problem from the upper floors.

Room Tip: Try the second floor so you don't have to wait for an elevator and use the stairs.

3rd trip to the Menger !! Room was nice furniture was unique not stamped out like the mega chains.
The valet was very nice and helpful. I really like the feel of hotel, the garden, the great bar, pictures line the walls filled with stories. Relax just and take it all in, historic grand hotels are few and far between. Nice change from boring business travel. Walk to everything from hotel.

The hotel is old, but clean. The history is awesome - but not a very plushy place to stay. Takes forever to get from the elevators to your room...right across the street from the Alamo!

Room Tip: Rooms are very old and need to be redone.

Menger was quite a historic experience. Room was small and comfortable, but the furnishing are in need of some upgrading while keeping in the historic feel of the hotel. They need to upgrade their towels, the ones they provide have far outweighed their life cycle and what you would expect from a franchise motel.
Don't bring a car if you don't have to, the $25 per day valet is a killer. The Colonial was great for breakfast and lunch, some good choices and reasonably priced, but limited on the dinner menu.
Easy access and walking distance to the Convention Center and Riverwalk.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences with Trip Advisor.

Within the next year, we are planning a renovation of our guest rooms and are excited about the changes.

There are several commercial parking areas within walking distance to the hotel. Our hotel valet service fees are comparable to downtown hotels.

We hope when your travels bring you back to San Antonio, you will once again choose the Historic Menger Hotel as your hotel of choice.

Over the years, I had stopped by The Menger for drinks on several occasions and was excited to finally have a chance to stay at this beautiful historic hotel. Unfortunately, my visit was extremely disappointing and it started at the front desk. The clerk wasn't rude, but not friendly at all and very slow. When we got to our room, the door sticks and I had to bump my shoulder into it to get the door to open. The bathtub had a ring around the inside and long hairs all over the bathroom. I'm not sure it was even cleaned after the last guest. While taking a shower the water temperature alternated from hot to cold, never staying at a constant temp. Then I spent a sleepless night trying to get comfortable on a very hard mattress while listening to toilets flush from as far away as 2 rooms in every direction. I realize this is an old hotel and structurally, some things can not be helped, but at least provide me with a smile at check-in, a clean bathroom and a comfortable mattress.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

THE GOOD: I love the Menger. Third time I've stayed here. Always stayed in the historic part before - love those rooms, in spite of thin walls. Housekeeping is excellent, as is the Colonial Room fare and service. The bar is still an atmospheric place for a drink. Storage space was great, square footage was roomy, appreciated the iron and ironing board. Location near Alamo and RiverWalk is superb. THE BAD: This time we were in the "modern" (1950) section, and it needs a major overhaul. Design, systems, decor are all outdated. Water temp in the shower went back and forth from scalding to frigid. Signs asked us to hang towels we would re-use but there were no hooks or towel bars - not one! Bath lighting is ghastly; light over the sink wasn't working and bulb never replaced in a 3-night stay. No pen in the room - no wonder so few guests filled out breakfast orders. Coffee maker broken.

Room Tip: For square footage and quiet, request "modern" section; for atmosphere go for the "hi...

This is a stately historic hotel located in an ideal spot, right next to the Alamo and just a few blocks from the Riverwalk. However, the outdated feel of it (almost funereal, it felt like) wore thin after two nights of our three-night stay, and I found myself looking forward to leaving. It might also have had something to do with the fact that the power went out all over downtown on our third night, leaving me more than a little freaked out about the prospect of sleeping in a "haunted hotel" with no electricity.

After you check off the highlights (bar, restaurant and walk through the property a few times), you've pretty much seen what you came to see.

We are pleased that you took the time to share your experience with Trip Advisor.

Fortunately, the power outage that occurred unexpectedly thoughout our downtown neighborhood is a rare occurrance. We have flashlights readily available for all our guests and I am proud that the ladies and gentlemen of our staff responded with professional calmness.

We hope when the opportunity arises for you to return to San Antonio, you will once again select the Historic Menger Hotel.
