We’re regular visitors to SJI (we’re planning on retiring there soon) and have gone out with most of the whale watch outfits on the Island — Maya’s Legacy is our favorite. This trip was the best yet, with Captain Jim Maya and naturalist April on their custom-built Aspen Power Catamaran. With just 4 other clients aboard, it felt like going out with friends — who happen to also be very knowledgeable about local wildlife. Jim knew just how to place the boat for the best viewing while showing genuine respect for these amazing animals. April kept up a running commentary while snapping incredible photos that she shared with us by email — we could just immerse ourselves in the experience without having to see things through our own viewfinders. The smoothness and stability of the Aspen cat was appreciated, as we could move all around the boat in complete safety. We saw at least 8 orcas at close range, as well as a dozen bald eagles and about 100 Stellar’s sea lions on our trip. Snug Harbor on Mitchell’s Bay is a wonderful resort and has very nice facilities just a stone’s throw from Lime Kiln Point and the Haro Strait, where there’s plenty of whale traffic. One of the other Maya’s boats viewed the first sperm whale seen in the Haro Strait later the same afternoon.

The Ocra tour was awesome. Our family (wife and 2 kids) is excited a lot and we had lots of fun with a great sight of whales/seals for a longer duration than what I had experienced in other tours. Captain Jim and his crew were amazing.

My son and I spent a few days on San Juan Island for his springbreak this year. We decided to take the Whale Watching trip from Maya's Legacy Whale Watching after talking with Rachel who was very helpful in planning the trip.

Captain Alan and April (the Naturalist) were both fantastic. While it took us a little while to find the Orca, it was well worth the effort. Both of them were very knowledgeable about the specific pods that we saw and could identify specific Orca with the briefest glimpse of one breaching the surface. I think that we saw around 18-20 different Orca. Most of them were in twos and threes, playing and traveling together. There were Moms and kids, Orphans who became 'Frat' brothers, and several other groupings. April was Fantastic at describing the Orca world and helping us understand the ecosystem and how it works. It was very clear that she 'loves' the Orca and it showed in her enthusiasm. She was Great! I highly recommend taking this trip!!! Jeff & Jason

Captain Jim and his assistant April, were great. This was a very exciting trip, my wife and I were celebrating our 2 yr anniversary and neither of us had seen Orcas in the wild on such a trip. March usually isn't the best time to find Orcas, but this crew had the vast knowledge and experience and patience to seek them out. And so we did we so many Orcas in our tour and other wildlife. I would recommend this tour to anyone who has never been. A safe and powerful boat on a beautiful weekend out of Snug Harbor!!
