Description: Welcome to The Cottage, formerly The Cottage Place. Join Chef Scott Heinonen and his team for farmhouse bistro cuisine inspired by the flavors of the French countryside.   After 6 weeks of refreshing renovations, we are officially open for dinner and are currently accepting reservations. The Cottage Chef Owner Scott Heinonen is a graduate from the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Over the past 30 years, Heinonen has cooked throughout the Southwest, Pacific Northwest and Northern California. He has also completed numerous continuing education courses at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley. A highlight of this time was his stint as a private chef for Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. Returning to Flagstaff in 2005, Heinonen was the opening chef of the popular Cuvee 928 Wine Bar & Cafe, where his cooking was met with rave reviews and created a culinary buzz with local gourmands. Following this time at Cuvee, Heinonen fulfilled a lifelong goal of operating his own restaurant. Tinderbox Kitchen opened in May of 2009, leading the culinary resurgence of Flagstaff and San Francisco Street’s “Southside.” Heinonen’s concept of “American Comfort Food Redefined” quickly made Tinderbox a regional favorite, garnering numerous accolades and creating an stellar reputation statewide. 2017 brings a new culinary chapter for Heinonen with the opening of The Cottage, formerly the Cottage Place. He has transformed this long time, Flagstaff fine dining restaurant into a stylish farmhouse French bistro, which opened April 23, 2017 for dinner service. The Cottage cuisine reflects the regional country dishes of France, interpreted with Heinonen’s modern sensibility, incorporating locally sourced ingredients. Chef Heinonen’s culinary passion is deeply rooted in cooking with the seasons and the ever-changing menu of The Cottage will emanate this philosophy. Diners can look forward to exploring French cuisine prepared with heart and soul.

Ownership of this restaurant changed hands this year and Keith, the new owner/chef, brings with him a well established Flagstaff reputation. Still, perhaps, it is the very best restaurant in Flagstaff. Tremendous creativity is evident.

What a wonderful dining experience we had. We were seated at a table for 4 in what used to be the front porch of original cottage. Friendly, experienced staff waited on us and gave us their recommendations. I had a steak with peppercorn sauce which was their special for that day, excellent! My friend had the lamb dish which she raved about and as she is a chef and has own catering business I would say that was a high compliment. All meals were good and were accompanied by an excellent wine choice which the knowledgeable staff helped us chose. Finished up with a chocolate mousse, lovely. Would recommend this "French chic bistro". They also have patio dining where you can bring your dog.

The fare at Scott Heinonen's The Cottage is akin to a trip to the gastronomic motherland. The Salmon Tartine paired with a glass of rosé speaks to life’s simple pleasures—whether experienced in Normandy or at 7,000 feet. The Beef Bourguinon and Blue Cheese Mashers recall winter dinners in Burgundy. The otherworldly desserts—from the traditional Crème brûlée to the wildly amusing Oufs a la Neige — are on par with the sugar-spun offerings of Paris herself. Don’t take my word for it. Book a table and experience Heinonen's magic for yourself.

It's so great to be able to walk into such a lovely restaurant post-hiking (in shorts, with obvious dirt on my ankles) and be treated to such graceful service and a really good meal. But that's the beauty of dining in Flagstaff - no jacket required for a
jacket-inspiring French meal. The second time we ventured in I was cleaner, and the service and meal were again top notch. We've sampled duck, steak, pork, and fish. Simple treatments made every dish shine. Did I mention that we are gluten free and that they are super knowledgable about what they can and can't do in the kitchen to accommodate. Turns out they can do quite a lot! This place is great. Don't save it for a special occasion. It's also good post-hiking.
