“Average hotel for the price, great location.”
Reviewed 3 March 2012

It probably doesn't need to be said but just in case: if you are not traveling with an active duty or retired service member or a DoD civilian, you can't stay here.

The Hale Koa is an average hotel for the price you are paying. A partial ocean view runs at least 25% lower than the Hilton next door, but the Hale Koa rooms haven't been updated in a long time. They are perfectly functional, but not luxurious. We didn't eat at any of the restaurants, but did try the luau, which was fun. The best part about the Hale Koa, other than the price, is the location right on Waikiki Beach.

Overall this is a great way to make your vacation dollars go further, but don't expect a luxurious mattress, thick sheets, or a premium tiled bathroom.

Great hotel with very good rates on the beach. Restaurants are good but not great, but the hotel's location is within walking distance of many good restaurants in Waikiki. Nice rooms, very pleasant and accommodating staff. You just can't beat the price if you qualify to stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: There are different towers and rooms with different views -- ocean or city, depending on your prefer...

Hale Koa is Hawaiian for "Soldier House," and this Waikiki gem by far exceeded our expectations! If you're traveling Hawaii on a budget, this is the place to start. My husband and I "splurged" on a partial oceanview room that also had a downtown view. The rooms are spacious, clean, and the decor has just enough "aloha" spirit! The Hale Koa grounds are the largest and have the best views of Waikiki, filled with pools, gardens and a beautifully landscaped pathway to the beach. We thoroughly enjoyed cocktails at the beach bar, where the inexpensive drinks and Happy Hour caught us by surprise. The open-air lobby was gorgeous, the 1st time we had seen such a thing! During our stay, we took advantage of almost every amenity available and felt like prices were fair and service/quality was beyond our expectations. We just booked another vacation to Oahu and Hale Koa is the only place we would consider staying!

Room Tip: Partial Oceanview was worth splurging

Our last visit was in 2001 and we were delighted to find the facilities in excellent condition, from the parking area, to the lobby, the restaurants, our room, the pools, and the beach area. We were lucky to be there duing the hotel's anniversay celebration, so it was nice to enjoy the festivities while we were there.

We had a great, clean room on a higher floor that provided excellent beach views. We didn't have any problems with the A/C, fridge, or noise.

The breakfast buffet was excellent and we enjoyed filling up each morning before heading out to enjoy the day. I was very nervous about the long lines I had read about from other reviews but the longest we waitied was 5-7 minutes. We were able to walk in on every other day when we arrived an hour after they opened.

The location is amazing and the beach didn't disappoint! We rented chairs, an umbrella, and a kayak for a small fee at the beach. It was worth every penny. You can walk on the beach to other places for shopping and eating. If you are near the pools, the grill cafe across from the luau area is excellent for a burger, pizza, chicken and other choices if you need to grab a quick bite.

The elevator at the end of one of the restaurants, nearest the pools and beach, was out-of-order almost each day of our trip, which was inconvenient since our room was in that same tower, and near the elevator. Being that this was the only negative experience during our trip, we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again!

Loved the hotel location right on one of the most beautiful stretches of Waikiki Beach, and entirely surrounded by a lovely park & fantastic Barefoot Bar on the beach. My fiance is retired Air Force, and its an amazing value for the cost (tax free too). The only downside was if you're looking for Room Service or Concierge, it pretty much doesn't exist. You have a small fridge in your room, and there is a BX for sodas & many other sundry items downstairs. Also because everyone has to check into the on-site restaurants with Military ID there's a substantial line and wait to get in no matter what time you try. Other than minimal frill service, it is totally worth it in terms of room, view and prime location.

Room Tip: Also you'll want to request a room higher than floor 10 if you want a really good view.

We stayed at the Hale Koa for our 35th wedding anniversary. The room was great with a view of the ocean. The hotel is on Waikiki beach and is convenient to everything a tourist might want. The Hale Koa has several restaurants on the property that are reasonably priced. Each room has a referigerator but no microwave (there is a microwave on each floor in the laundry room). We enjoyed the adult pool (18 years old and above only) and the hot tub. Internet connectivity was expensive at $9.95 per day but we were on vacation and didn't really care about wifi. They do have a kiosk where you can sign-in to your flight and print boarding passes for free. All in all...this was a wonderful stay and we are looking forward to visiting again soon.

Room Tip: all rooms were excellent...we are particularly fond of the ocean view

Hale Koa has convinced us that we need to return to Hawaii as soon as possible. We had a wonderful time. The resort has everything and is within walking distance to many shops and restaurants. It was clean and everyone was very friendly.

As others have mentioned there is no microwave and the fridge isn’t the best. No WiFi either – but still a great place.

We had breakfast at the restaurant on sight. It was good. Eggs a little overcooked but all in all good. I had the macadamia nut pancakes, delicious.
