This year, we tried a 4 day stay at the Outrigger Luana in Waikiki. The views from this hotel are really great in that it overlooks Fort Derussy Park; some rooms would include an ocean view. The bed was the most comfortable one we've experienced in our travels. While we hadn't requested a suite with full kitchen, we were pleased to be provided with a fridge, toaster, dishes, cuttlery and coffee maker but no cooking facility. The kitchen and bath areas had granite countertops and marble surrounds. TV was a flat screen model. The lanai was rather small and there was a bit of a problem aligning the locks on the lanai door. There is a guest laundry area. The pool lounges had comfy mattresses on them. Now for the negatives: the pool is too cool, which is becoming an annoying complaint of visitors to Hawaii. The other concern is bus service could be more conveniently located. All in all, I'd recommend the Outrigger Luana based primarily on the hotel itself and it's picturesque location in Waikiki.

Room Tip: Be sure to specify the view you require and whether or not you need to have a stove for cooking.

We thought we got a steal. From the valet parking up front, front desk and services we could not have ask for more. The room was like an efficiency apartment. Comfortable bed, dining table/chairs, granite counter top, dishes, frig, sleeper couch and balcony with ocean view. Location was great, shops and waikiki beach a walk away. For a busy street we were impressed at how quiet it was. The rates, (which we searched around for) were more than great and yes you have to pay for valet parking, but most hotesl in Honolulu charge for valet. Besides, they had our car to us usually within 30 seconds...no joke. Best of all was the service, EVERYONE there had a smile and made you feel welcome. Thank you again Outrigger Luana!

This was on my honeymoon so when I first open the door I was expecting a surprise rather it was a shock. The good: big fridge, LCD tv, iPod dock and an OK view. The bad:a double bed mattress seemed very old as we both felt like we were sinking into the bed and no we are not obese. We had uncomfortable sleepless nights and the streets were noisy we lost count how many times you could hear police sirens going off? The gym is fairly average air-con keeps going off so you had to keep to turning it on and the equipment is pretty average. The front desk staff are pretty dull and not as friendly as you expect them to be. The bell men at front are very nice and chatty though :) always saying hello they make up for bad service at front. Only one shop that's overpriced inside. 2 computers to share amongst all guest :(. In the bathroom you can't bloody turn the taps you will see what I mean if you go to luana. My partner and I think it's overpriced and overall we didn't feel it was clean the place has a weird old smell to it. Not a good experience at all what a shame. We moved to another hotel down the road as we didn't feel comfortable at luana. And not to mention the cutlery was dirty such as knives and spoons it was awful had to buy own cutlery!!

The good: Great location, small kitchen - The bad: double bed, very expensive valet only parking, needs to be renovated - The ugly: stained carpets, strange smells and noisy between rooms. Our stay was average at best.

We chose this over the military hotel right across the street because this hotel had kitchenettes. The room was spacious with a balcony that had beautiful views of the sunsets. Of course that rainbow every afternoon was a nice treat too. Clean room and helpful and friendly staff.
Close to lots of activities
The only caveat was the $25 daily parking fee. We used the military parking lot just around the corner instead( retired, and still watching the budget a bit).
We plan to use this hotel chain again in our future travels.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter and don't forget to ask for one with a balcony.

Stayed for 6 nights in January 2012. For those people wondering if this is the place for you, it is if you want a nice place (but not 4 or 5 star luxury - think holiday Inn Express without breakfast) close (but not in) to all the real bustle. Hotel is on the main street for action in Waikiki about a 5 minute walk to the start of all the fancy shops (Coach, Juicy, Apple etc, etc - warning guys, there is lots and lots of shopping). the area is not scary and the only (well dressed) hookers we saw were right near the International Village. By the way, if anyone thinks Waikiki is second rate or that Oahu isnt a desirable destination let me help you out. Its awesome. Fab beaches, lovely people, good prices, terrific sites. Its clean (almost no litter) safe and did i mention those beaches?
Ok back to the review. Room we had was nice - tile floor, queen bed, roomy kitchenette with bar fridge/freezer (very roomy - we found out why - these places are individually owned and then rented out under mgmt contract) with a small but servicable balcony and much needed a/c. the street is noisy at night but with the door closed and the ac on, it didnt matter.
Pool area is smaller but certainly in scale with the hotel and with a nice sunning lounging area but we never used it. I mean have you seen Waikiki beach? Its awesome and only a 10 minite walk through the park. Didnt try the restaurant but others did and said it was fine. There was a coupon for 15% off in the little book we got at check in.
Ok so if you are a value traveller with taste (and you know who you are, dont you?) go ahead and book this place. If we had bought this on priceline or hotwire it would be in the 3 to 3.5 star category.
Money saving tips. the parking is high - 25 bucks per day and its valet so you gotta tip. Dont bother searching for options (like i did). If you have a car you will be parking it here. So, what to do?
If you are on a really tight budget, get a bus or cab here and get around the town and island by bus. Or rent a car a day at a time for say two days of your visit. There is a rental place (Dollar) across the street and just rent it for the day and return it back that night. Do that for a couple days to tour the island and you are good as gold.

Happy hours are great and oh so cheap. We had drinks/dinner at the Shereton Rumfire a couple nights. Its great and right on the water with free (and good) music. You should go! Dukes at the outrigger was also terrific and we went to the Kona brewery pub and the beer and natchos were top drawer. Its out of town a bit so you would need to drive. Also, you will want to put a few cold ones and some fruit and snacks in that handy kitchen. you could go to one of the many, many ABC stores and pay a lot - but does that sound like us? Nope, we found a local grocery store (a real one - safeway size) called the food pantry right in the thick of Waikiki and walked over there each day or so for supplies. its about a 10-15 minute walk away through interesting and non-scary streets. Its open until 1 am and the address is 2370 Kuhio Avenue which is on a road that starts across the street from the hotel. You must buy some pinappple - its out of this world.
Also, sign up for Groupons and living social deals for Honolulu a couple months before your trip. We did and got some good deals on outings in particular a 90 minute catameran harbour sail for 10 bucks each. It was fun and the drinks were only 3 bucks each and left for in front of the Shereton.
We walked up Diamond Head, drove to the North shore and Leeward coast and toured the Royal Palace free music Friday from the Royal orchastra. All terrific. Driving is fine, by the way. Drivers are courtious and the speeds are moderate. Get a decent map and you will be fine. Much better/nicer driving than any big mainland US city. There is a 700 booth swap meet at Aloha stadium a couple days each week and free fireworks friday night on the beach at 7.30 in front of the shereton.
So, in summary, a great value hotel in a good location in a fantastic place. there are many places fancier but we will come back here. As for Wakiki and Oahu, youve made a great choice. Enjoy!

We just finished a 8 day stay at the Luana. We have been in Waikiki at 10 hotels and by far this was the cleanest, friendliest, and the best location in the area. It is not right on the beach, but a short walk through a lovely park to it. The staff is always helpful. There is no foot traffic through the hotel, so you can go to the pool and feel that you are not on view by everyone walking through to the beach. The parking staff is very helpful, and though there is a daily charge it is no higher than the standard fee, and you have in and out privileges. The cafe on the front of the hotel serves a nice breakfast and lunch and is like the rest of the hotel friendly and clean. If you want a wonderful location, a clean and comfortable room, and even a gift when they were told it was our wedding anniversary, this is the place to come. If we go back to Hawaii, we would not go anywhere else.

Room Tip: We had an ocean view, but all views are nice. The room has a re fridge, kitchen sink and a nice set...
