If you want to go to Waikiki but want to avoid the "same old, same old" of large hotel conglomerates with their ho-hum decor and poolside musicians, consider the Equus. It's an unassuming boutique hotel decorated in the simple, chic style of Ralph Lauren. It is located smack dab in the heart of Waikiki across from the Prince Hotel and just steps from Hilton Hawaiian Village, both of which costs 3-4 times the cost of the Equus.
One doesn't go to Waikiki for peace and quiet, complimentary breakfasts, or to hang out in a hotel room. One would go to a resort outside of the city for these. The Equus is an immaculate, tasteful, low budget, aesthetically pleasing boutique hotel that screams: location, location, location. There was no view to speak of, but we weren't there for a view. We were there to access to all of the amenities of the other hotels in town, including the best beaches, restaurants, and shopping.
Their covered entrance, compete with polished slate and brass railings, feels like a homestay in an Asian country and is devoid of the typical Waikiki hype. The warmth and friendliness of the front desk staff overshadows the understated front desk and lobby but the impeccable cleanliness and aesthetics of every inch of this hidden treasure are what stand out.More
