From the minute you walk through the tall white columns of the Westin Moana in Honolulu, you are transported to a bygone era where people used to take time to just sit on a veranda and watch the world go by. There are several places in the hotel where you can do just that. From the rocking chairs in front to the lounge chairs on the veranda, you see people relaxing and soaking in the Island charm. The Westin beds are divine and we slept soundly after a day of activities, waking without an ache or pain. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The workout room is well appointed. The spa is lovely and the view overlooking Waikiki Beach is spectacular. Music is offered nightly on the patio. The beach sand is lovely, but the in the water it is rocky and full of coral. The current is surprisingly strong. We had a wonderful surfing lesson with Josh, but feet were pretty cut up after. The only real lapse is that the staff seem ill informed. On several occasions we were given a piece of information by the front desk that turned out not to be correct. The concierge staff recommended places that were in the tourist magazines, but failed to mention the best restaurants in the area. The exception here is Tomoko, who went out of her way to look up the Kuan Yin Temple for me because she hadn't heard of it. The service at breakfast was abominable. Servers dropped pitchers and plates, didn't know how to prepare the $12 Kona French press, and failed to check in regularly for coffee refills, etc. The food itself was good, however, including the Japanese breakfast part of the buffet. Location, setting/architecture, comfort, and cleanliness are the selling points for this property.

Wing located right in the beach in Waikiki and right in the heart of the shopping district makes this hotel just great. Feels like a traditional Westin hotel. Great service, clean rooms, great pool, beach service and very nice restaurants. I highly recommend this property.

Set directly on Waikiki beach proper since 1901, the First Lady of Waikiki is a magical experience in a tropical paradise.  The Moana Surfrider is an impresively well maintained property with friendly staff, exquisit dining, and a high-class crowd.  This is not a hotel where college students on spring break go to party.  Rather, you'll see young newlyweds and couples celebrating 40 year anniversaries enjoying high-tea in proper attire.

Check in is friendly and mostly efficient, but lines at the desk can get long during busy check in hours.  If you are driving and not utilizing Valet, make sure you ask for the parking pass. The service person at the check-in desk probably will not offer it or ask if you need one.The parking fee is included in the resort charge and parking is located right across the street at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani.

Housekeeping is exceptional. Rooms are very well maintained and are free of sand and moisture common to beach resorts. Room service options are a bit scarce and focus primarily on luxury and fancy appeal rather than actual meals. Perfect only for a light evening snack with a fine wine or bottle of champaign. Vegetarian or other specific dietary options are almost non-existent.  Information is conflicting and inconsistent in the resort guides provided in the room. The Stay Well guide mentions that breakfast is served at The Veranda, while the resort information card says it is served at The Beachhouse.  Turns out they are both the same restauraunt, changing names between morning and evening.

Contacting someone to ask a question or request service can be frustrating. The Service Express line is nothing more than connect you to a hotel operator and does not connect you to a knowledgable concierge. When you ask a simple question, such as where breakfast is served, you just get transferred to another desk. Questions about complimentary resort features again just gets you transferred somewhere else.  For a hotel of this calibre this is unnacceptable.  In addition, be cautious when entering the shops located in the hotel.  The shops are independent of the hotel and do not hold themselves to the same standard of service, particularly the Nohea Gallery.  Someone may try to either hustle a sale out of you or just ignore you completly if they don't think you fit their "customer profile".

Breakfast at The Veranda (or The Beachhouse, or whatever) is phenominal.  Standard American breakfast options can be found with enough variations from day to day to make it interesting.  In addition you'll find common Japanese style breakfast and the occasional local options along with plenty of fruits and pastries.  It's family friendly, the service is fantastic, and the meal is worth every penny.

In addition to your room rate you will pay a daily resort fee.  You'll get a list of what services and amenities the resort fee covers when you check in.  It's not just a gimmick to get more money out of you.  For example, self-parking is free (a $25 daily value), and valet is only $15 daily.  Also included is in-room internet access, bottled water, and many other benefits most Waikiki hotels nick-and-dime for.

The only gimmick in the resort fees that I could find was the "Complimentary 4x6 print".  Essentially, there is a photographer on site you can book with for a sitting fee, and as part of that you'll get at least a 4x6 print if you don't purchase another print package.  Not really free, is it?

Overall the Moana Surfrider is an exceptional place to stay, but be prepaired to pay for the luxery.  Service can be spotty, and sometimes confusing to find, but overall is very good once you get in touch with the right people.

We had a one night stay there on March 30 after a week on Molokai. Great location, probably the best. I stood in line for 40 minutes at 6:20AM to reserve a beach front umbrella ($50). Well worth it. Great view plus food and beverage service at your chair. Skip the Mai Tai and go directly to the Lahina Punch.

They honored our request for connecting rooms (I'm Starwood Platinum) plus gave us a room for late check out - 4PM (again Platinum helped here).

Rooms were within Westin standards for quality (very good) with the exception of the tub/showers. The tubs were a bit tired looking. Everything else was clean and comfortable.

Concierge service was very capable too.

Room Tip: We were in the Tower towards the ocean with a partial ocean view. Good enough, but why be in your r...

1. Staff when we arrived were very helpful and gave us a choice of 2 rooms that were available to choose from. We chose the banyan side even though it had no balcony because of the views. There is a verandah on the 6th floor that you can sit on so that worked for us.
2. The room was very small but you're not in it much so it didn't really matter. The bed was very comfortable. No real problem with the room.
3. Service at the beach bar with the wait staff was terrible. You're better off going to the bar and getting what you want there. We reserved chairs on the beach and were told someone would come around to serve you if you turn the tag around but no one ever came even after we requested from them directly several times. Also, when we sat at the tables around the
beach bar the service was not good. I think they need to hire more staff or have someone manage that area.
4. Pool was small but efficient. Mostly young children in it.
5. Right across the street from all the action. Plenty of places to shop & eat. Rockers outside face the street side so you can do plenty of people watching.

Room Tip: Ask to see a couple before choosing.

I spent my honeymoon there and had an amazing time. The food was good but I thought it could've been better.
The. Concierge was amazing! My wife and I actually came to the desk about 45 minutes after the activities and tour director closed. However Wailani was still a me to book our tickets for tomorrows tour to Pearl Harbour.

My husband and I stayed for three nights at this hotel and loved it. We were expecting our room to be small which it was but it was at the front of the building in the Banyan Wing and had a fabulous view of the beach. This was the first hotel built in Hawaii and it has been restored beautifully. The staff were attentive and we were able to access our room at 11.00am after a long flight.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms in the Banyan Wing are also closer to the band but it didn't bother us too...
