Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins

We stayed in three different hotels in Yellowstone- (Grant Village, Lake Hotel and Snow Lodge). Snow lodge is the one we will stay in when we return. The cabin had two QUEEN beds instead of doubles. The bathroom was large and had a heater. Our cabin had a porch, lots of windows and was a short walk to the laundry facility. Very nice!

This was our 3rd and final Xanterra lodge we stayed at in our drive thru Yellowstone. The Snow Lodge and Old Faithful area were great! The lodge and rooms are really nice and clean and don't have the busy/hectic feeling that the Old Faithful lodge has (accidentally went there first and there were people all over the place!) The Old Faithful geyser is within walking distance which was great too. We also enjoyed a nice dinner at the Obsidian Dining Room in the Snow Lodge which was a nice change from the other Xanterra cafes/grills we ate at. I definitely recommend staying here and inside the park. The convenience is really worth the extra money!

Old Faithful Snow Lodge is brilliant we loved everything about the place, from our first moment to our goodbye it was truly memorable. The room was beautiful and well appointed with all facilities except television, but who really needs one of them in a place like this? The restaurant at the Snow Lodge we thought to be the better of the two having tried Old Faithful Inn one night and in spite of the hype that a reservation is required at Old Faithful Inn the Snow Lodge we thought was far better.

This was our second time at Yellowstone and second time staying in the Snow Lodge Cabins.
During our stays we had been to all the different locations/lodges in the park and really, none of them are outstanding. You're basically paying for the location and the honor of staying in one of more beautiful parks in the world. The benefit of staying by Old Faithful is that you are in the middle of the park and within walking distance of many of the geysers. Everything is overpriced in the park, ... gas, food, souvenirs, laundry, etc. The Snow Lodge Cabins are no exception; they are old, small, and housekeeping basically non existent during our 4 day stay; we were just happy the heat and plumbing were working. Yes paying up to $200 just to have a place to lay your head at nite is a shame, but the pay off is spending all the day light hours hiking the trails and relishing Nature's wonders. The cost is really prohibitive for many Americans and it is a shame those who do save for once in a life time trip don't get more for their money. If you are going to stay out of the park I suggest West Yellowstone, there are some nice hotels and it is a relatively easy drive to many of the attractions/sites. I also suggest you visit in early June, you may get some snow/wind, but the cabin heat works and there are no pools or a/c in Yellowstone.

Management response:Responded 10 July 2012

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on TripAdvisor regarding your recent stay with us at the Snow Lodge here in Yellowstone National Park.

I was disappointed to read that you didn't feel you received a good value for your accommodations at the Snow Lodge. Since the lodge is located within a National Park, which is managed by the National Park Service, we have very little control over the rates charged at all of the in-park lodges. In fact, we work closely with the National Park Service to determine reasonable rates based on several factors, including rates at comparable lodges within the region. Our rates are reviewed and ultimately approved by the National Park Service.

Thanks again for letting us know about your recent stay, we appreciate your candid feedback. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip at Yellowstone National Park and we hope to see you again in the near future.

Pros - nice bedding, bathroom stuff, nice furniture, good location, cool coffee machine
Cons - small rooms, no AC and it can get really hot, have to pay for wi-fi, long laundry lines (the folks at the lodge across the street use the 3 laundry machines in the snow lodge too)

Plus on our first night, the room we got was very noisy (right above the front entrance), plus you could hear upstairs. I called and complained, and they moved us to a room on the 3rd floor, which was quieter from these type of noises.

We paid $250 a night for a room with 2 queen, which is a lot. But I guess that's the price of staying in the park.

If you have young children and want to see animals, which was our scenario, you may want to consider staying in other areas of the park, closer to Hayden or Lamar valley. Snow lodge is nice as it's right by old faithful and the geysers, but it's a long drive from the main animal viewing valleys. The buffalo do hang out around the snow lodge, but then again, the buffalo hang out everywhere. :-)

We had a terrific stay at the Snow Lodge. The rooms were clean, nice, and the staff was pleasant.

We were on the 2nd floor on the back side (Room 2011). It was windy weather in Yellowstone, but very little wind/breeze made it into our room. I don't know if this was due to being on the back side of the hotel and if the breeze always tends to blow that way. There is a fan in the room, but we were there during an especially hot week and our room was hot a lot of the time. (There is no airconditioning.)

Details: The room is small (but do-able) for a family of 4 (8&9yr old kids). (We stayed 4 nights.) There are 2 built in cabinet/closets. These were great for storing our suitcases and kids backpacks. There is a bench area when you first enter the room which was helpful for hiking stuff. We were excited to have a coffee machine in our room. The Kcups were easy and kept things clean. Just to note: no tv and no free internet. Internet is available but I thought was too pricey for the amount of things that I wanted to do. There were a lot of people connecting in the lobby so I don't know if they were using a phone to allow them to connect and sharing it with one another?

The only laundry facilitied in the entire Old Faithful Geyser area are located on the 2nd floor of the Snow Lodge. This worked out great for us b/c we were on a 2 week trip and needed to do laundry. There were 4 or 5 washers and 6 dryers. They were $1.50 per load but did have a quarter machine and supply machine in the room.

There are 2 restaurants in the hotel and many right in the area. There is a sit down and a grill. There is also a gift store (Bear's Den). Right out the back/side door by the Bear's Den, there is a general store which worked great for snacks, water bottles, etc.

Room Tip: We couldn't hear anything from the rooms around us, but could hear nonstop movement in the room...

I was aware of my contiguous neighbors - but not enough not to get a good night's sleep.
The cabin was in the perfect location, as I got up and walked the boardwalk in the morning. Only a few other people were out and I got to see the Daisy Geyser, Grand and Castle geyser all go off before 9 am. I am not generally an early riser, but just being there and knowing I had time after a lovely morning walk to pack and start my day meant that it was a perfect morning. I got the kind of experience everyone wants if they are there to see the geysers. It was quite the experience.
