From what we saw the snowlodge was a better option than Old Faithful it's self. The snowlodge is less busy yet very close. Our "cabin" was really a stand alone building with four hotel rooms. It didn't look like a "cabin" but was a large clean room with a lot of space even a walk in closet. It has a hair dryer and that is all. One night we had a bird or something knocking on our roof all night. One day there was a buffalo sitting 30 feet from our door just sitting. I would say here again. The resturaunt at the Snow Lodge was better than the Old Faithful's. The best phone service in the park. (Verizon). One more bonus is that this is one of the few hotels that are open all year in Yellowstone.

In the second segment of an extended stay inside Yellowstone, my parents and I stayed in one of the cabins at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins. The whole Old Faithful complex is quite confusing but the snow lodge is one of the newest facilities there. Our cabin was tucked in the back of the snow lodge.. and at first looked more like a work camp than hotel lodgings. Cabins are situated on a gravel patch, with sparse trees or vegetation. The interior of our cabin was a pleasant surprise - clean, comfortable and spacious. We had lots of space for all our stuff, the bathroom was of generous proportions. Like all xanterra properties in Yellowstone, it was still a bit expensive but it was worth it to be away from the crowds thronging the main lodges around old faithful. The cabin was quiet and off the beaten path, yet had easy access to restaurants, pathways and old faithful. The dining room at the snow lodge itself was good, but again overpriced. We ate there regularly as it was the closest and we didn't feel like battling the mobs at the old faithful dining room across the road. Snow Lodge makes an excellent prime rib, a decent breakfast and passable lunch. Surprisingly, the Yellowstone red wine was a fabulous wine for a great price - $5 a glass. the only inexpensive thing sold by Xanterra I think.

What a dump and a ripoff. At $200+ a night, Xanterra and the Park Service should be ashamed of themselves. Years ago, national park rooms were never great, but at least the charges were reasonably fair. You could stay at a Four Seasons (off season) for this price.

Unfortunately, travelers to Yellowstone are a captive audience, and Xanterra (the hotel operator) takes full advantage of your plight. Who wants to drive 2 hours away for a decent room in Jackson or West Yellowstone?

The rooms are dark, dingy, and generally unpleasant. The bathroom is tiny and outrageously outdated. If it is even a bit warm in Yellowstone, the room becomes as hot as the sun, eventually cooling off during the night to the mere heat of an oven. Xanterra does thoughtfully (only kidding) provide one lousy small fan that can only blow toward one of the two beds in a double room.

The beds are hard and uncomfortable. The so-called pillows are likewise uncomfortable. Further, there are only two postage stamp size pillows. I guess I could have asked housekeeping for more, but at 9:30 (we stayed out of the room as much as possible) it seemed to be too late to bother.

And the food in the hotel is only slightly better than the room. The service is equally as poor.

I am tired of hearing that modern conveniences are not necessary at a hotel in a rustic national park like Yellowstone. That's just a cop out to justify the miserable rooms and conditions. Suffering should not be part of the national park experience when you're paying over $200 per night. Certainly, it's not that way at the wonderful El Tovar in Grand Canyon.

Avoid this dump like the plague -- which it is worse than.

We stayed for 2 nights in a room at Old Faithful Snow Lodge, in the lodge, and it's nice for Yellowstone, but nothing like what you would normally expect for a $220 room. The worst part was I got bitten a bunch of times by bedbugs on the ear, neck, head, shoulder, and chin. Yikes. Very emotionally unpleasant.

Newest lodging in Yellowstone, had everything we could have wanted and more. The room was large, clean and the beds were comfortable. The location within the Old Faithful complex and proximity to the geyser was perfect. The only thing that would have been better would have been if Old Faithful would have been more centrally located within the park :).

We had so much fun the kids didn't even miss the TV!
