“Fabulous”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

We stayed at the Le Telfair between 10th March and 24th March and had a wonderful relaxing holiday. This was our third trip to Mauritius we had previously stayed at the Maritimbut we decided this time to try the South. We were originally booked in the Heritage Awali but a few days before depature the travel agent asked if we would consider moving to the Telfair (due to overbooking) on the assurance this was an upgrade. We were a bit apprehensive at first but our concerns were completely unfounded and on arrival we found this to be much better hotel. The colonial style building and gardens are beautiful, we had a river view room on the ground floor which was very spacious, light and clean. We were all inclusive so we could eat at any of the restaurants on the al a carte menu or buffet at the Balafon at the Heritage and drinks were included. We dined at the Balafon and Infinity Blue (Awali) and Annabellas, Gin'ja and the Chateau for the Mauritian experience. We were a bit disappointed with the food in the Awali restaurants but this was probably due to the fact that we had already been spoiled by the excellent food and service in the Le Telfair restaurants. The pool and beach bar Le Palmier also served light lunches and pancakes in the afternoon. The quality and flavour of the food at all the restaurants was superb. In early evening at the Palmier they set up tables and chairs on the beach and serve drinks and snacks which is a perfect place to enjoy the sunset. The staff at the hotel could not do enough to help and they really made the holiday very special. We had a few spa treatments which I would recommend and also made use of the gym, tennis courts and bike rides at the activity centre. We had cocktails every night at the Cavendish Bar which is a beautifully decorated room in the Colonial style, the staff were very attentive and they also served a variety of snacks with the drinks. Overall this was a perfect holiday in fabulous surroundings, beautiful hotel and with excellent service.

We recently stayed at Le Telfair for a week with our 3 year old twin boys. We had a wonderful experience and enjoyed the stay immensely - so much so that on the penultimate day I was trying to see if I could change our flights and extend for a few days, which unfortunately was not possible. I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. We tried to get the boys to stay in the kids club so we'd have a bit of a break ourselves, but they absolutely refused to go so it was a real family holiday in the end!

I used the spa and had 3 lovely hours being pampered in a really relaxing environment. My husband went scuba diving - divers note the diving is not particularly impressive. We ate at Annabellas as we had the kids with us in the evenings and found it easier if we had a table outside so they could play with the least disruption to the other guests! Minor niggles - birds in the restaurant were a bit of a nuisance. And the pillows were lumpy things, plus they did not realise there were 2 children (this could have been the travel agent's error) so had to hurriedly put up a makeshift bed.

We took the half board option and in hindsight I think it might have been better to go for all inclusive as the lunch and drinks were quite expensive - but although for South African wallets it might seem expensive, I think the prices were consistent with a 5 star hotel.

Beach is lovely and we also really enjoyed the C-Beach club which was better suited to the kids than the beautiful pool area in the hotel. I was too lazy to make use of the gym, but it was extremely well equipped and looked great.

Room Tip: We had an upstairs room with river views, with a balcony which was a bit nerve wracking with 2 inqui...

I've travelled all over the world, 47 countries in total, and this is the first time I have felt so positive about a hotel that I committed to take the time to write a report on TripAdvisor upon my return. Le Telfair was a a five star experience in all aspects. Beautiful hotel, with a refreshing, colonial style and very well maintained. Food in Annabella's was first class (we took the half-board option). It didnt involve a buffet melee which suited us. We had a lovely meal and experience at the Mauritian night at Chateau Bel Ombre and Lobster meal on the beach, under the stars.

One key factor in choosing Le Telfair was not only the look of the hotel, and the positive reports on TripAdvisor but the golf course which was complimentary. Beautiful course, very well kept and an all round first class golfing experience. We played eight times ! Apparently its now the No 1 golf course in Mauritius.

Super modern gym, with David a personal trainer on hand. The Thai Chi was very relaxing. Some nice touches like an on site nurse (all are included in the price with no extra charges). Nice spa although like many in these good hotels, quite expensive.

One main differentiating factor was the quality of staff who delivered excellent customer service in a very natural, friendly manner. All obviously had very good training and most we spoke to had been there since the hotel opened 7 years ago, always a good sign. Very reliable, if someone said they were going to do something, they did it and in a timely and professional manner. Management very visible and proactively sought feedback for continuous improvement.

All in all, would highly recommend.. Note: Le Telfair is certainly a level up from its sister hotel The Awali next door.

We first visited Le Telfair in 2009 and having had such a great holiday we decided to return in October 2011 not only for a holiday but to get married!

On arrival you are welcomed at the hotel with a refreshing cocktail plus one of the girls from the kids club came and met our son and let us know what was happening over the next few days.
All the rooms types in the hotel are large and bright and on our wedding night and for the following we week we were upgraded from a Senior Suite to a stunning Ocean Suite.
The hotel is extremely clean and well kept the staff very polite and friendly and the service is outstanding. My only negative comment would be that the service in Anabella’s was not as good when the hotel was busier – the 2nd week we were there was the school half term week and we felt the service was lacking slightly.
The main pool even in the busier week was never full and there are always plenty of empty sun beds around. The Spa is great and the kids club fantastic with some good activities planned. The C –Beach club is a great addition, there is a good selection of water sports here plus the pool, games room and outdoor play area which are good for kids of all ages and a nice restaurant / bar.

We arrived a week before the wedding and our guests and Ornella (our wedding co-ordinator) met with us at least once a day to discuss our wedding plans and keep us up to date with everything. We had a few concerns on the run up to the day and spoke with the Manager Stephan who took the time to discuss these and reassure us. We had a total of 26 guests at the wedding and had a buffet meal on the beach in the evening, everything from the set up of the table, seating area and the meal itself was outstanding. We had a chef, people serving the food and clearing the tables and our own sommelier for the evening. We had other meals and get togethers planned in the days before and after the wedding and these were all also arranged and set up fantastically.
Our wedding was everything and more that we hoped for and we would highly recommend Le Telfair for both a holiday and wedding!

A big thanks to Ornella, the Sommelier’s Olivier and Jean, Chef Ravi and to Stephan who all ensured that we had the most fantastic wedding just as we wanted.

We will be returning again soon!

Advertised as five stars, the Hotel Le Telfair, Mauritius is more of a three/four star. The facilities are great with stunning accommodation and excellent access to the beach. However, there are limited facilities for children below the age of five. There is no child cutlery whatsoever and this can be difficult if travelling with a young family. The staff are extremely friendly but can be annoying in that their level of service is slow. It was common to wait 20 – 30 minutes for food, drinks and bills. The staff also let themselves down on the very basics. Despite having a do not disturb sign on the door the staff still let themselves in the room. If you insist on them leaving you will be called by reception some five minutes later asking to let the staff in. On one occasion, I was naked in the shower and had to raise my voice and resort to foul language to get the staff member to leave.

The food at the resort is fantastic and there are many choices. We never had a bad meal. The most popular restaurant in the resort is Gin-Ja (Sushi/Asian-fushion), I would highly recommend it. Even if a guest of the resort, you still need to book a table and I would recommend booking two days in advance. The food here is out of this world. There is more on the menu than just fish (Child Friendly)

Whilst on the beach, the staff are attentive however, it can be come annoying if you simply wish to relax. I would recommend a stay at the hotel as it a beautiful hotel and resort, it is very tranquil with wonderful architecture. However, it can be frustrating at times. If you were willing to overlook this, then I would recommend the Heritage Le Telfair.

Depending on your view, there is limited access to the internet and you will need to pay approx £120 for two weeks internet access. The TV channels are limited to a few English channels and a number of films which can be accessed.

When we booked this with Kuoni, we booked and paid for all inclusive. yet on arrival, we were told we were half board. However, this is more of an issue with Kuoni not the hotel.

Room Tip: Three main types of room. The quieter ones are near to the Chill Sailing Club. However, a little lon...

The Good.

The hotel rooms, food, facilities and beach are all fantastic.
The spa provides a very good service, v good massages and treatments.
The golf course it top notch, great design, great condition.

The Bad

The only thing that let this place down was the service which was not fully 5 star. The staff are friendly but lacked organisation and training. For example if they served soup no spoon would be provided, you had to request it and then wait. We requested room service, it never arrived. The fuse blew it took till the next day to sort it out.

One other strange thing is that lunch is only served at the beach bar which has about 15 tables which is not nearly enough. You had to wait around or get their early and it was chaotic at times.

We took a pram for the toddler but the hotel complex is not pram or wheelchair friendly, this is a major mistake with the hotel design, too many stairs and steps

The Ugly

There is nothing ugly about it.

Reviewed 20 February 2012

We just finished 2 weeks of vacation in Mauritius. first week in the Telfaire and second week at the Anahita. We are a family we 2 kids (3 and 6) and are playing golf. We have been last year for the first time ion this hotel and we made our second holiday this february. I think it's important to describe what you are aiming for to understand a review.

The very good.
- Senior Suite are very nice and big (but also expensive) which is good with 2 kids.
- Hotel colonial Style and garden are very nice.
- Staff is lovely are really listening to you (a majordome is assigned to your room and always looking that things goes right.
- SPA is very nice, but treatment are expensive for Mauritius
- dinner are usually very good at the Annabel's (main restaurant). Food is changing every evening. We had a indian buffet which was great (but again way too expensive)
- 3 other restaurants are available, so you can change (but they are too expensive for the quality)
- golf course is excellent
- The new C restaurant is a good alternative and the location is great for kids

The Good
- Beach and sea are nice
- Main Pool is good but you can find a lot better on the island. But nor really adapted to small kids (C club is better alternative here)
-kids club is good but we found better quality at the anahita

To Improve
- Ginja restaurant quality has decreased since last year, but the price are still very high. I m ok to pay if the quality follows. This was not the case this year. We went just once.
- Restaurant price are too high for the quality. Specially for kids and the wines. Price for special buffet is way to high too.
- Service at the Annabel's does not meat the 5 stars level. Slow, forgetting sometimes what you asked, some team member shirt were wet already during the breakfast (a bit disgusting).
- too many people at the Annabel's restaurant during breakfast or dinner, sometimes had the feeling of cantine.
- We had golf included in the room price but had to pay for the golf cart which were very expensive (1900 R)

Overall we had a very good stay at the telfair. Certainly one of the best hotel on the island, specially if you can get a good price on some website like Ebookers. The week after we went to the Anahita which was in our opinion better in some areas for about the same price.
