“Billion Dollar View”
Reviewed 19 November 2011

We have stayed at the Mountain River View Guest House in Vang Vieng for 6 weeks in both 2010 and 2011. The rooms have stunning views of the mountains, the river and charming rural scenery. They are clean with en-suite shower room, aircon, fan, TV, giant beds and good linen. The staff are very helpful and trustworthy and will book buses etc. This guest house is positioned at the quieter end of town and it seems to be popular with both young and not-so-young tourists/travellers. It is within walking distance of everything that happens in town. You can find places in VV at a third of the price and also at 5 times the price. For us, Mountain River View is the best value for money in town.

Room Tip: Room 301 has the most stunning view

My friends and I arrived in Vang Vieng looking for a cheap but clean guesthouse. After looking at some rooms at the same price point (~30,000 kip per person, $3.70), we came to the Mountain Riverview Guesthouse. The guesthouse is brand new, 3 stories, with great views (depending on the room you get). The rooms are super clean, there are two computers in the lobby that are free to use, and a large lobby area with wooden seating for socializing. The location is amongst the rest of the guesthouses and close to restaurants and bars. Definitely a great value, especially if you are splitting a room with friends. Highly recommended!

The views from the rooms facing the river are quite nice indeed and the short walk into town is also very pleasant. I was there on Christmas Eve, though when the bar next door set up an extraordinary example of thumping audio equipment. No matter -- it's all over by 11pm. Overall, a funky little place with very comfortable beds, WiFi, and an at-home feel. Prices are average for Vang Vieng - my interior room with a fan was $10.

See subj. There were no rooms with mountains view available, therefore we spent here one night on ground floor and moved to Domon Guesthouse into room with mountain view.
We arrived at 4 am from Luang Prabang by buss (several hours late from expecting arival time). guy on reception showed us two rooms on ground floor, both wih stifling smell... We took the room with less disturbing smell.
Rock climbing was main goal of our visit and preferences for acomodation in Vang Vieng were:
- under 15$
- with balcony and nice view
- close to city center

I was looking for a quiet, clean, hotel with a great view of the river and mountains, and this was as good as any in town, for less than half the price of the best of the rest. I recommend it highly.

This is just about the most northerly hotel and, therefore, the quietest as it is furthest from the music and parites! VV is a nice place, beautifully set in karst mountain scenery and more walking, cycling, kayaking and tubing than anyone could want. Sure, it is a bit party central but the MV gets you the advantages without the disadvantages. We got a double en suite with a balcony for 100,000 kip (without breakfast, A/c would add 20,000) and beautiful had a view of the mountains from the room and a 5 minute walk into the life of this small town.
BEWARE - the VIP bus to Vientianne sold by the hotel was, at least for us, a very old, non air conditioned bus, not VIP at all. I don't know how you do get on the nicer buses, but I found out the hard way how to pay the VIP fare and not get the VIP bus.

We stayed for three nights and, by and large, it was fine. The rooms were big and came with a fan (aircon was available for a 25% supplement) and the bed was comfy. As has already been said, the views from the balcony were fantastic.

Only two real problems: the first, which I suspect applied to everywhere in town, is the noise coming from the island into the night; the second, which was almost certainly unique to this hotel, was the approach to plumbing the bathroom sink, which is to say they didn't. The water ran through the plug-hole, down a small pipe and then onto the floor to drain out through the drainage hole for the shower water. It wasn't a problem as such, just a bit annoying when you were brushing your teeth only to find that you were essentially spitting on your feet. Not a reason not to stay, just a bit daft.

Another general point to bear in mind is the really annoying trait among the gap year kids to pinch flipflops from outside internet cafes, etc. Be warned!
