I booked 5 nights at Surf Bay via Agoda, several months ago, in anticipation for our trip to Sri Lanka. A week or so before arrival, we decided we wanted to shorten our stay and leave after 3 nights instead, so I tried to change the booking (which was well within the accepted change period), and was unable to... so I contacted Agoda and they tried to change the reservation and the hotel did not get back to them either.
My partner and I were already traveling and after Agoda customer service called us, they advised us to go to the hotel, check in for the nights we wanted, and tell them about the problems we've had contacting them. We agreed, and after a very long travel day on Sri Lankan trains, we finally arrived at Surf Bay last night, as the sun was setting.
Imagine our surprise when nobody at the hotel had any idea we were arriving, and the hotel didn't even seem operational... it was devoid of any customers. It seems the hotel has changed hands and the new owners had no idea what was going on. Someone told us they had called the manager to come meet us, and showed us a room we could stay in, which was dark, dingy, smelly, and definitely not what we wanted after a long day of travel. We tried to explain the situation to the people there (who didn't seem to be working, just living there), and they just told us to wait for the manager. We waited for about 15-20 minutes for the manager, then left our bags and went to find a different place to stay. When we went to collect our bags maybe 30-40 minutes later, the place was completely deserted with not a soul around. So weird. Fortunately Agoda was super helpful and is refunding me the full amount (I'd prepaid) plus giving me a gift card since the new room I booked last minute was much more expensive. Definitely don't stay at Surf Bay!

We booked two nights in the family room with breakfast included. We are travelling as a group of three, two adults and a child.

The hotel has good reviews and is listed as being extremely close to the beach. Admittedly it was less than a 10 min walk to the beach but you have to cross two roads and walk down a short cut alleyways to get there.
The staff are welcoming and friendly and were helpful with information about surfing and train times.
The whole building is a lovely old place with lots of original features but its tired and in need of a freshen up/decorating /a good scrub. Our room was really big and airy with air con and two fans. There were two large double beds.
The room was pretty dirty and the mosquito nets yellow with age. There was clean bedding on the bed but the room and adjoining bathroom need a really good scrub. The shower was great.
There were loads of dead bugs on the net and there is no key to the room we were in so couldn't lock it when away. There were bolts on the inside thankfully. The soundproofing was poor and we could clearly hear other residents of the building.
Breakfast was simple, fresh fruit toast and fried eggs with tea or coffee.
It was the cheapest place we have stayed in Sri Lanka so far but we definitely wouldn't return due to lack of security and the general cleanliness. We can't fault the friendliness of the owner and the guys who run it but its actually more like a hostel than a hotel.

This hotel is very nice, clean and mostly quiet. We stayed in the fan rooms that are at the back of the property. The rooms are very clean and the bathrooms are nice, with hot showers. The only downside of this guest house is that it is right next to the Trainline. The trains stop at around 9pm but start at 5:30am and because there is a rail crossing up ahead the trains have to blow their horns right outside the rooms. Other than that the rooms are great and we would recommend them.

Nadim is really nice and kind person, who like to help to his costumers.
Great breakfest and food.
The rooma are clean and comfortable with hot water shower and AC/ fan.
Very recommended if you are looking for guesthouse with a decent price close to the beach.

Spent two nights here in December. Welligama is a beautiful place! The staff was friendly and helpful. The owner even agreed to drive us to Hikkaduwa!

The rooms were clean and nice, though no hot water. The staff helped us with surfing and laundry. All in all a good stay!
