The location is amazing, Matemwe is a non-touristic village on the east coast of Zanzibar and Vila Tulia is tucked away between the green ribbon of bush and palm trees that hug the powdery white sand beach. You’ll need to rent a car to get there and around.
The house has 3 big bedrooms, each with their own bathroom and shower, a large living room and large kitchen. Outside a large terras with table and a private swimming pool. The owners description is accurate and pictures are less nice than reality.
A cleaning lady is passing by daily making up the beds and wiping floors to get the beach sand out, the pool is cleaned daily, and a couple of Maasai guard the property 24x7.
Groceries is a bit of a challenge as the there are very few “supermarkets” around and the few that are there are limited in choice. Buy fruit and vegetables at the many street stalls on the roads, western things should be bought in better stocked supermarkets in Zanzibar city. Nungwi, 25 min away has a bakery and 2 small supermarkets that have some stuff.
Very good communication with the owners upfront, good information brochure, and in case of questions the owners are available to help and live next door most of the time.
It is a beautiful place where you can forget about the fussy world outside. Hosts are friendly and very helpful. I would love to came bank for a logger stay.
If you like to be in a beautiful and quiet location, this place is ideal for you. I definitely was looking for something like that! No more than 20 meters from our residence there is a wide and beautiful white beach. I loved sitting on the terrace, contemplating a gorgeous view of the ocean. The bungalow is nicely decorated and very comfortable even for six people. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Nearby, on the beach, there is a small restaurant run by Muhammed who serves simple and delicious food. We also visited Marina, a surprisingly peaceful, beautiful resort with bungalows, swimming pools and great bars and restaurants. They have a diving and snorkeling centre and organize trips to a coral reef with instructors. They made my reef snorkeling a fantastic experience, giving me all the opportunities to admire the beauty of the reefs and feel safe at the same time. After snorkeling, it was great to have an excellent dinner and a very special passion fruit drink☺
Ten days spent at Villa Tulia was like a dream: a quiet, relaxing and rejuvenating vacation on the most beautiful, clean and white, soft sand Matemwe beach.
The nicely decorated, comfortable and well equipped house is both secluded and right on the beach. The accommodations are perfect for up to 6 people. The very friendly owners next door, access to a refreshing swimming pool and a short distance to a local bar as well as to a wonderful beach-based restaurant at Mohamed's, make this a destination that we want to go back to.
Great place to relax and to observe the fishing village local beach life taking place in front of ones eyes.
This was a last minute rental as our hotel lost our reservations the day before we left for our trip. Booking was easy, and Justyna was quick to respond to all of my e-mails. The price ended up being considerably cheaper than our original hotel, and we got so much more!
The home took our breath away. It was much more than we expected, and the pictures do not do it justice. We are the adventurous type, and had to be mindful that time spent relaxing in the hammock, staring at the ocean, easily got away from us... it is easy to literally sit there all day soaking in the scenery. The beach was quiet (Except for a wonderful Friday evening football game among the locals). The sunrise was amazing start to each day.
Being able to make our own breakfast in the morning, and dinners some evenings made the trip feel more like home. There is a green grocer and a butcher in one of the nearby villages, but you will have to get most of your groceries from Zanzibar Town. There is a fishing village nearby for fresh fish and plenty of restaurants that are just a short walk along the beach.
Matemwe is quite a trek from Stone Town... we rented a car for $180 for the week. Driving was stressful in the busy areas, but in all, it was worth it to have the freedom to be able to explore the entire island. It took between an hour and an hour and a half to get to town, depending on traffic.
We felt very safe here... having security 24-7 was an added bonus! We will definitely be staying here again!!!!
We just spent 4 nights at Villa Tulia. Beautiful place. Directly on beach. Had Muhammad cook our breakfasts and dinner, and he did an amazing job. We liked his cooking so well we went down to his restaurant and had lunch one day. He assisted with setting up tours and they were also wonderful! Snorkeling and a Stone Town tour is a must do.
Located on the very coast. The ocean is sometimes 25 meters away from the house (at high tide). A tasetfully decorated and traditionally designed very conveniant home. Unlike the organized tour: you call the cards. You have the ocean and the beach at your feet. You can buy and cook food, or take advantage of local restaurants. One thing missing is the Internet - although some may find it an added value. I hope you will enjoy it!
