The Ella to Kandy train ride has been the highlight of our visit so far. We arrived at the Ella train station at 11 am and booked first class tickets in the observation car for 11:50. I think we were very lucky to have gotten tickets as the train was very full. The ride itself was slow moving and bumpy but that only added to the charm. I spent most of the ride hanging out of the side entrance door for a close up view of the surroundings. The train climbs to almost 2,000 meters and cuts through the most beautiful section of the hill country. Interesting to see the locals and hikers re-emerge from the bush as we passed since the train tracks also serve as a walking path between villages. We stopped at many stations and had several opportunities to sample the local cuisine thanks to the hawkers that offered local cakes and hot chili’s either through the window or in the isle. The trip lasted 6.5 hours and was a bit long but all in all a great experience.

Our group of 4 took the train from Nanu Oya to Bandarawela. Nice change from the car. We had reserved seats in first class. Scenery was very interesting with forest, tea plantations and farm land along the way. Luckily we were not in any hurry since we were sidetracked for a while awaiting the passage of another train. No problem!!

Through the tea plantations, rising to the highest station close to Horton Plains, past jungle and more tea plantations across bridges and hugging cliffs to Ella, Quite simply a stunning ride worth every Rupee. Important to find a reliable company to get tickets. Many are kept on the black market resulting in higher than published prices for tickets.

We took the train from Peradeniya (Kandy) to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) and travelled first class. Tickets were obtained through our tour operator. The journey was just over three hours and we enjoyed spectacular scenery through the hills and tea plantations., seeing the tea pluckers at work and passing numerous waterfalls.

This was a little bit too long train ride. It took almost 10 hours. So it would be better to have one stop on the way. Otherwise scenes were beautiful and our seats on 3rd class were good. There you have enough room to walk around and you can open the window so you can take great pictures. We went to Ella train station 1,5h before departure and there was only 3rd class seats left.
