Our Family and some Friends took over the whole property, and therefore used Upper & Lower School House + the Pool House. Lovely area, 2 doors away from the local supermarket - if a large group you need to think about a bulk order the day previously to obtain sufficient bread etc. Owners went out of their way to ensure everything was to our satisfaction, and nothing was too much trouble. Pool got a lot of use, as did the BBQs. Next big Town is Chalais, not too far to drive to and many shops to use. Could have stayed much longer if we could have.
Stayed in the Pool House gite, ideal for two people and just two steps to the fantastic (and maintained daily) pool. An oasis of tranquillity in the sleepy village of St Romain. Lovely welcome from the delightful hosts, Richard and Carole, a mine of information about the surrounding area. Very well equipped accommodation, including dishwasher, DVD player, Freeview and a private barbecue. Plenty of parking and a shop and (excellent) restaurant on the doorstep. Ideal base to relax in while exploring the region. Would we return? Definitely.
We have just returned from a week in the pool house and had the most relaxing time ever. Richard was the perfect host and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property has everything you need and we slept so well in the very comfortable bed. Aubeterre is beautiful and we enjoyed the walk there and back(c 30mins). Dined at the hotel in Saint Romain twice and had the most wonderful food and hospitality. All in all we can recommend this place for a totally relaxing stay and Richard and Carole are the perfect hosts. We will return
With misty eyes we begin our annual search for the next holiday and I think it's a testament of Richard and Carole that we still remember our last holiday a year on. We visited in peak season 2016 but the sleepy hamlet of saint romain is so laid back and quiet you would not know it. The location is fantastic for exploring - the beautiful aubeterre is a short hop away- the walk there is lovely but on a very hot day with young kids and an unimpressed wife probably needs better planning...the dordogne is on the doorstep really and there are some lovely places to visit. Whilst the coast is doable for a day trip we did not bother as we loved the local river beaches - chilling out and picnicking . When we were not out we chilled by the lovely shared pool and garden. We may have been very lucky but we met some really lovely other families whilst we were there and enjoyed the shared nature of the garden etc. We would also echo all the comments about the hosts who were fantastic and helpful- clearly a work of love and attention. We stayed in the bottom apartment which was lovely( there are 3 parts that can be rented separately or together) - the only minor thing we had not realised was that it's on a split level from the garden so it meant one of us always had to keep an eye on the kids ( 3 and 6 at the time) so we could not prep a meal whilst the kids played. All pools are alarmed in France but it was just a peace of mind factor! Overall a fantastic thoroughly enjoyable holiday and if we ever return to the area we know where to look up first !! With love and kisses the Mearnsies
Well - where do I start. My partner and I stayed for a long weekend but I can assure you, this was not long enough! We arrived to such a warm welcome and instantly felt at home. The outside of the gites look absolutely stunning and are very well maintained, along with the traditional French feel! We stayed in the pool house as it was only the two of us. The gite was absolutely spotless and so homely - very tastefully decorated! It was amazing to wake up to the pool each morning with plenty of space to relax on a sunlounger or enjoy a meal outside on the table and chairs (gas bbq supplied!). There is also a games room with table tennis and an array of games for all ages.
We hired a car from Bergerac airport and it took around an hour and 15 minutes to drive. The roads are very quiet and the scenery is amazing! The gites are very close to some lovely areas, namely Aubeterre and Chailas which hold markets on certain days and have the most beautiful buildings (you must see The Church of Saint-Jean which an impressively huge subterranean church in Aubeterre).
Richard and Carole will always say hello and ask how your stay is, without intruding upon your space - they have a fantastic balance and are ready to help if needed. They know the area and surrounding areas very well and are more than happy to recommend experiences for all ages.
We can't thank you enough for everything and will certainly recommend anyone to stay here. Can guarantee you'll have a relaxing and very warm stay. Until next time - we promise we will be back!!!
What a glorious location -- quiet and in wonderful surroundings.
Carole and Richard couldn't have done more to make my stay an experience to be remembered -- even though my arrival was delayed by a day!
The pool-side gites was most comfortable and fitted out with everything needed for my visit.
Oh! And the weather was fantastic.
Would recommend this to couples or families for a perfect holiday.
