We arrived late (11pm) with our 4 year old but even the late hour the reception staff greeted us at the taxi, took care of our bags and had arranged food in our villa. That was the start to the most fantastic holiday we have had. All the staff were amazing, the food was superb, it was lovely to have a sit down 3 course dinner every night (half board). Breakfast was beautiful with the option of either buffet English or continental or eggs cooked however you liked (the omelettes were brilliant with a choice of any ingredient!). We stayed in villa 4 which had amazing views over Malia and the sea. A lovely breeze kept us cool in the sun as well as the very well maintained pool. The main pool was rarely used however, loungers were available if you fancied using the facilities with a waiter bar service too!
We were moved to another villa on our last night due to an overbooking on the hotels part. This was a slight inconvenience but the staff were friendly enough and helped with the move. This villa overlooked the hills which was a nice view (although not as nice as the previous view).
All in all an amazing hotel in a great location.
If we do go back we will definitely hire a car as walking anywhere would be impossible!! Taxi fares were €7 into town so can get quite costly.
Drinks prices at the hotel are very reasonable. As well as the food costs.

Dear Guests,
We are grateful for taking the time to make a review in Trip Advisor both for our hotel and the staff. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience created from your last night move to another villa, unfortunately it was inevitable due to overbooking!
I hope this will not be a negative factor for you to visit our hotel one more time and offer you a memorable and pleasant stay!

We have just returned from a weeks stay in an Ambassador Villa at Royal Heights and would thoroughly recommend it for a relaxing holiday.

The villa was clean and well presented with a wonderful pool. WiFi and phone connection were great all week.

What made this holiday was the friendly and helpful staff who could not do enough for you.

Pablos the driver was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond what was expected.

Athina on reception was wonderful and always had a welcoming smile.

All of the other staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Meals were fantastic even for a fussy eater, they would slightly alter things to accommodate.

Perfect holiday destination if you do not mind being away from the hustle and bustle which was perfect for us - but only a few minutes drive to get anywhere.

We would love to return.

We stayed at this resort a couple of weeks ago for a week. Had not been to Greece as a family before so didn't quite know what to expect - and it was amazing.
Great location in the hills behind Malia. No roads passing so really quiet. Not loads of villas/apartments so never felt crowded. No towels on sunbeds at the main pool (though Sunday is busy there as locals come to join in).
Our apartment was smart and spacious. Our own pool was a great size. They all looked good from what we could see but ours in particular seemed perfect.Lovely view down over Malia to the coast from our garden.
You *could* walk into the town and down to the beach if you wanted, but it is a bit of a trek and coming back would be fairly steep. However, taxis are cheap and friendly and the hotel has Pablos - one of the friendliest, most helpful men you could meet - who can act as a shuttle for you at cheaper rate than the taxis. He is also great at recommending beaches, tavernas, supermarkets - whatever you ask!
All staff at the hotel were friendly and couldn't do enough for you, from the twice-a-day cleaners who come to the apartment, to the staff in the restaurant and bar, to the hotel reception. Special mention to Athina (I think I spelled that correctly), who is on the hotel desk in the evening. Nothing is too much trouble. So was lovely to us and the kids. Above and beyond anything we have experienced anywhere before.
Wouldn't hesitate to go back though would probably hire a car for at least part of the stay next time so we could go further afield.

Writing this mostly as a warning to anyone considering this hotel that needs any type of reliable connection, find another place (there are many great ones on the island!) if wifi and mobile connectivity isn't an issue for you and a nice very basic 3 star hotel that is quite empty with nice staff is what your after, consider this one.

The good:
Nice staff overall (but for one waitress who doesn't like smiling;)
Nice views from the restaurant
Quiet location
Reception, room service, maids are all great
Pool has space and not many people

The not so good:
Pool is very shallow al the way (max is 1.35cm)
Very very bad wifi in rooms
Bad cell reception due to location
Dodgy wifi elsewhere
Nothing is walking distance
Room decor basic
Reception and hotel com not 24/7
Breakfast
Light in rooms
Location, driving back at night isn't fun (almost no light climbing up a mountain)

As we've stayed in Crete many many times before then it's mostly about context, this isn't bad all things considered, but comparing to most previous stays, not that great.

Wherever you choose have a great vacation and enjoy wonderful Crete!

Dear Guest,
We greatly thank you for the extensive review about your stay with us on Tripadvisor
We were sorry to read your negative comments especially when the hotel has a big percentage of returning guests who consider the Hotel a second home and the staff old friends who support the hotel. Regarding the lights towards the hotel, we have done the appropriate things in order to give lights in the area however, things have to be done from the municipality of Malia as well, and also the hotel provides a shuttle to and from the hotel with an extra charge (taxi service) in order to service our guest and make their transfer to and from Malia town easier. The location from itself is a disadvantage for the Wi-Fi and the cell signal, we are trying hard though to be improved.
We regret that your stay in our Hotel was not up to your expectations. We apologize for any inconvenience caused during your stay, and we hope you offer us maybe in the future the opportunity to change your mind!
Kindest regards

We stayed in an Ambassador villa for a week in June. The Royal Heights resort really provided us with the best of both worlds - delicious food in the restaurant (we were half board) but also the provision of the kitchen in the villa to be able to stock up on our own food and drink from the supermarket as and when we wanted to. The fact the villas each have their own good-sized pools in the garden of the villa was fantastic and it made my son's holiday.

All of the staff made us very welcome and are an asset to this lovely resort - we would go back again in a second!
