Owner description: Essential part of Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna (Historical and Environmental Geo-mining Park of Sardinia)and of "European Geoparks", Montevecchio was honored as Destination of Excellence by the European Commission in 2011. You'll have the chance to admire the places where started the XIX century's Industrial revolution in Sardinia. From the humble dwellings of the workers to the luxurious palace of the direction, you'll enjoy an exciting tour among the old mine's remains and the nature with his typical inhabitants: the majestic Sardinian deer.

We took the full tour, which includes the director office/house as well as three mine locations. Although you cannot access the real mine, it still presents a good picture of how life must have been for the miners and their families. Guide spoke good English. The ticket office is in downtown Montevecchio, opposite the director house. Just around the corner is a small workshop where two locals create knifes.

Very interesting tour. It is a time capsule into the lives of miners community, since the middle of the 19th century until the end of the 20th century. The tour includes a visit to the mine, the work shopes and housing. The guide was very informative both in Italian and English.

It's good to see that sardinia is making something of its old mines so that the country doesn't lose sight if it's heritage.
I loved the palace with its decoration and even the servants quarters looked comfortable.
I had managed to send a message a few weeks in advance on their website in English and got a reply from Giuseppe. He was able to tell me what days we could visit and guarantee an English speaking, tour guide.
Rita was our guide. There was my husband I who were the only English speakers on our group, the rest being Italian. She took the time to come and talk to us.
We were shown the palace first which is where you buy tickets . It is in a village beyond the mine. We then followed the guide in our own cars down to the mine workings. A lot is being done to preserve the site.

The extraction of minerals in the area of Montevecchio dates back to the Phoenician and Roman times. In 1842, modern industrial mining activity started in the area, thanks to the arrival of entrepreneurs such as Giovanni Antonio Pischedda and Giovanni Antonio Sanna.
At its height, the mining village was inhabited by more than 3000 people. The mines of Montevecchio stopped their activities in 1991. The mines of Montevecchio are now an important site of industrial archaeology, part of the Parco Geominerario Storico ed Ambientale della Sardegna.
