I booked at Kviknes for a photo but they reserved us a rooms in a "new" building and it was very poor, no acconditinated and it was a desillusion for us.

Room Tip: The new building is poor and ugly. Not for four stars

When you come to Balestrand by boat from Bergen the Kvikne's is an amazing sight that welcomes you to one of the most beautiful towns of the Sognefjord. The old wing of the hotel is stunning. Unfortunately we were assigned to a room in the new one (that of course hasn't the same charme) but the room was large, lightful, reasonably modern, well furnished and very clean. All the rooms have a large balcony with a table and two chairs and a wonderful view over the fjord or over the town with its small Saint Olaf's Church. You can wander freely in all the lobbies and lounges of the ancient hotel, sit on one vintage couch, sip a coffee and admire one of the many pictures on the walls, including a superb Hans Dahl original that has literally moved me to tears. Spending some time at afternoon at the Kviknes, thanks to the almost unreal canvas of Balestrand too, is like going back to the XIX century. A great place.

We stayed in the new section which felt a bit dated but my in laws stayed in the historic section which needed some serious updating. I am sure Mr Kvikne will reply with his usual excuses but the room did NOT live up to the price or view. (It was dingy)
The grounds itself were very nice and the buffet dinner was also very well executed with some nice dishes.
Needs work.

This is a most gracious hotel with an old wing and most, including us, getting assigned rooms in the newer wing. Our "inside" room still had a corner view of the fjord and a sweeping view of the village and mountains backing the fjord.

Internet access, clearly promised in the room and throughout the hotel, was not really functional in our room, but worked in the lobby area. The hotel buffet dinner was impressive and presented a wide choice of eating options, but everything in Scandinavia and this too was painfully expensive, e.g. over $80 per person for the dinner !!! Breakfast was included in the room charge and was also very good and generous in options.

We were pleased that nonsmoking rooms were available.

Room Tip: Ask for a view room but be prepared to PAY extra for it.

We stayed in the top floor of the "new" wing which looks slightly at odds with the old wooden main building. The room was good with a balcony and a great view. Good buffet breakfast and dinner, which is served in the grand dining room in the original hotel building, with views down the fjord. For walkers, there is an excellent map available at reception, with routes to suit all abilities.
