Simple and short: After spending few hours in Belmonte as part of our family's 6 weeks vacation in Portugal, I can clearly state that it should not be part of most visitors' itinerary.
This museum is dedicated to the extremely interesting theme of the discovery of Brazil by Cabral. Only the video presentation are in English (those that work...) and all the rest (most of the museum) is only in Portuguese (that I speak).
A total mix of different displays in an unairconditioned, terribly hot building forces you to do your utmost to get out of there as quickly as possible. The video displays are LONG and detailed, way beyond the interest level of most people, who will not sit and listen to the whole thing (take my word for it). Terrible waste of potential and for most tourists, waste of time.

Belmonte is the hometown to some of the most important contributors to the Discovery effort. The museum is an outstanding tool to understand how the adventure began.

The museum is mostly dedicated to Pedro Alvares Cabral as he is from Belmonte. Cabral discovered Brazil but there isnt much about him in Lison....all you want to know about him, the discovery itself and many other curious facts are in this very well presented museum. Not to be missed.

This museum has some really interesting features, and is very family friendly. I particularly enjoyed the dark room where you can sit and hear the sea. Worth a visit as all other museums in town.
