Overnighter on a motorcycle tour, good secure garage, rooms fine, staff excellent, very central, good rates, easy to find. It has air conditioning and all the usual amenities you expect of a Spanish Hotel. Nice and warm though November!

The hotel is in a good position near the town centre and the caves. There is street parking if you can get a spot , if not, the hotel has a parking garage for which they charge 7 euros a night. Rooms are fine, bed was comfortable, a typical 2 star hotel. Staff didn't speak English but they were very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was Ok.

The hotel location and Aracena itself is excellent but the rest of it was a bit of a let down.

Our twin room was located on the first floor overlooking the street from which the hotel is entered. Initial concerns that it would be noisy were allayed when we closed the shutters and curtains and found them to be very effective and there was very little traffic passing by. As can be seen from the photos via Trip Advisor, the rooms are quite dated but show ones with laminate flooring. Ours had a carpet which was generally dirty from years of use but also had hairs on it on the day we arrived and were still there when we departed after three nights. That probably explains why we never heard a vacuum cleaner. One day we were left without towels. Given that we were there at a quiet period at the end of September I'd have though they would have put us in one of the better rooms assuming that the ones with laminate flooring are actually better.

Breakfast costs 4.5 euros each. If it had been included in the price it would have been bad enough but to charge so much for so little was terrible. The photos show prepared fresh fruit and plates of meat and cheese but we only saw a small plate of one type of processed meat. Cheese was restricted to small packs of cheese spread and the only bread was sliced, dull and tasteless. Pretty much everything on offer was pre-packed. There are places to get a better value breakfast within a few minutes walk so after the first morning we ate elsewhere.

Overall it felt like the owners have lost interest in the place and stopped trying and base their offering on the fact that their hotel caters for tourists who they will never see again rather than repeat business. Sort the housekeeping and the breakfast and this can be an excellent place.

Don't expect period charm: Los Castanos is a modern hotel that does the essential things extremely well. It's good value, comfortable and clean and well run. The staff we met didn't speak English but were helpful and efficient and we were able to park in the street outside. Highly recommended.
