Avalon Springs
Reviewed 16 March 2012

My husband and I had been to Montagu Springs a few times before, but decided to spoil ourselves to 2 days at the Avalon Springs hotel instead. My husband has been ill for nearly a year and I had undergone a major operation at the end of last year so we thought it would be nice to go away and relax completely. It was also an early anniversary celebration as that will be later this month.

We were shown to our room and were immediately greeted by a lot of noise above us as they were repairing gas pipes and were traipsing back and forth making our ceiling fan bounce - they wouldn't be working there forever so it wasn't a big deal really. However, later we realised that our room was above the restaurant and right next to the entrance to their kitchens so we couldn't sit on our balcony as the smells emanating from there were not great and the 4 air conditioners were extremely noisy. These aircon units were switched off, but came on again at 4 a.m. so it was very difficult to sleep.

The room itself was a little impractical e.g. the switch to the bedside light was attached to the side of the pedestal on the opposite side so it meant that I had to get out of bed to switch it off.

The next day, we asked if we could change rooms because of our close proximity to the kitchen and the noisy aircons, which we were able to do at lunch time. The room itself seemed nicer - unfortunately, we later realised that this room was above the bar and there was a compressor that had to be kept on 24/7 for the fridges so, once again, it was a bit of a struggle to get sleep.

What really upset us the most, though, was that they had a braai and karaoke evening on the Thursday night, which would have been ok except that it went on until just after 12 a.m. It was our choice not to join in on this, but it meant that we couldn't go and relax in the pools in the evening as we would have liked to as it was being held at the bar area right there. It was very loud so we couldn't even get any peace in our room - we called reception at about 11.15 p.m. to ask when it would stop. They said it should be stopping any time, but it seemed that they were having trouble trying to get them to quieten down. If they felt it necessary to have the function, it should have been limited to a reasonable time so that other guests in the hotel could have some peace and quiet or just enjoy the hot pools.

At 7 a.m. they were busy using the vaccuum cleaner in the foyer, which I also feel is too early.

This used to be the perfect place to go and relax and get some peace and quiet, but no more, it seems. Guests are smoking around the pool, there is loud music coming from the bar during the day and there is a general disregard for other people there. We deliberately went during the week as we realise that weekends are busy and noisier, but this has also changed now. We took a walk around Montagu springs and it was so much quieter and more befitting to a spa resort.

Avalon Springs has, unfortunately, become a holiday camp so I don't think we would return to the hotel again. It was the most we have spent on accommodation for a short 2 day break, but it seems like you don't always get what you pay for as we have had some lovely little breaks away in much cheaper establishments.

Room Tip: Make sure you are away from the restaurant and bar.

This was a quick weekend break from home. A short drive, reasonable price and a spur of the moment decision. We booked the AVALON Suite (most luxurious).

It's hilarious. Black marble everywhere. Like the set of a 70's porn film.

It's an unrenovated piece of 70's kitch, perfectly preserved. The development of the natural spring could not have been worse too. The views are ruined with cheesy attractions (like the very slow water-slide). It's a real monument to what happens with a lack of planning and foresight.

But, it was charming and unpretencious. The staff were really wonderful, and the other guests delightful. The food was excellent.

We will come back :)

Room Tip: The Avalon suite has a spa bath in the room fed with water from the spring.

We stayed for 4 nights in the Avalon Springs hotel at a cost of R1400.00 per day.For 2 nights we could not use the shower due to broken shower head.Complained twice to the duty manageress
but could not sort out problem,The first night i complained at 11.15pm after returning from the pools - duty manager said that the staff left at 11.00pm and i had to wait till the next morning - i was very unhappy - after complaining they send up a security guard with a a screwdriver. he had a look and said he unable to fix it.- The following morning the manageress Natasha returned to our room with the housekeeping manageress & one of the maintenance guys who took of the shower head and returned after 15 min.- the problem was not sorted out because we had the same problem the following night and had to go through the same saga.Apologies was made and a R400.00 discount was given for the 2 nights .I don't think we will go back to Avalon Springs very soon.

So wen here on the recomendation of a colleague. The carpark is a little strange to begin with as a series of tent like awnings keep the sun off the cars, but it does look a little ghetto, I had a suite, which was comprised of a two bedroom, two bathroom, one living room and balcony mini apartment. Very sizable. However the rooms themselves felt dated and walking around the main hotel had a feel of better days gone by. However for approx 1000R represented good value if there were 2 couples sharing.

Apparently the hotel was flooded in 1981 and was substantially remodelled around then. Pretty much the whole resort felt like that was the last time any TLC was afforded on the property.
The springs themselves and grounds did not feel inviting and infact I left straight after breakfast the following day, having no desire to use the resorts facilities.
Food was basic and forgettable. Dinner was rump steak and chips (fries), tough and bland. Breakfast was a buffet that had food, but nothing memorable or particularly enjoyable.

Yes! For the past 6 years and at least once a year my husband and I have been going to this lovely Hotel. The staff are very friendly and when one goes to the same hotel years in a row and find the same familiar faces greeting you and serving that establishement for that long it surely means - happy staff and happy guests. From the rooms, dining room, spring pool attendants, public areas and children friendliness we just have to praise this Hotel. We will go back any time - I wish I could go back more often.

Room Tip: ask for a front facing deck room - spacious and brand new units - if you go with kids get a mountain...

We didn't stay in accommodation here so can't comment but our experience as day guests to the spa was so absolutely awful that I have to post a comment. We went early on a Saturday morning - parking options were on steep grassy slope (took us 15 mins to park car safely) and when we went in, the pool area was TOTAL PANDAMONIUM. They obviously let too many people in. We didn't even get changed into swimwear as we would not have been able to move in the pool. Kids everywhere - it was like an infestation! So we watched the France v England rugby game instead and then left. So, our entrance fee was more like a donation. Very bad experience.

Iv always found the tripadvisor to be very useful as iv had a few very bad experiences and take client service very seriously as im sure most do. And this year I really wanted my birthday to be extra special so i planned a weekend away...

After reading the reviews for avalon springs , especially for the pass 2months, i was very scepticle of going as it was known to be the worst place to go. It was said the staff is horribly rude, the food is overpriced, the water is terrible, and it is overall a big "no go".
So because iv been to all the other places in the surroinding areas i went with my fingers crossed

When i eventually arrived on the 19th August 2011 i had booked spa treatments for my partner and I so we headed straight for the spa. Alfie, such a wonderful personality she has and what a warm welcome i received. I immediatly felt right at home. The pratitioner Juween did such a excellent job it was 2hours well spent!

Heading down to reception to check-in everyone was so nice, both the staff and the guests.
The guy at reception (wish i could remember his name, not sure if he is the duty manager. Big built guy) was soo incredibly nice. I checked in with no fuss, and a porter was arranged to help with my luggage. No moaning or groaning about carrying luggage (and i had alotta things), no rudeness from the staff, no argueing, nothing what so ever. I really felt like a guest.

My family and I stayed in the mountain chalet for the weekend. Beautifully furnished, spotless, well accomodated cabin was my home away from home. The heated flooring went perfectly with the weather, and the view was amasing.

When ordering room service the staff were friendly and very effiecient, thats beside the fact that he food was great!!! The restaurant is not overpriced at all! I loved it! I particularly absolutley love the chocolate malva pudding, compliments to the chef. It was the perfect midnight snack

My parents arrived on the saturday to join us as my birthday was the sunday. They arrived quite late, and still wanted to braai. We never had wood and needed help carrying from the cafe as there were alotta stairs. The staff were so helpful and never once complained. I probably called reception a million times for every little thing i needed and never once did they give me attitude.

Saturday night in the indoor pool was the best, the staff and guests ended up singing happy birthday to me at 00h00. That made it extra special and the water was divine.

Waking up the next morning reception arranged to have a cake sent up to the room as requested by my fiance, with candles. They sneaked it up just before breakfast and i woke up with another wonderful surprise.

Walking down to the restaurant everyone remembered my birthday and i got another handfull of wishes. The breakfast buffet was excellent, satisfied wouldnt explain my reaction. And just when it seemed all the fun was over the waitor (Almaro,if im not mistaken) sang a beautiful happy birthday solo in restaurant aloud infront of all the guests. Wow!!!! I was blown away!!!!!!!

I departed effortlessly and all the horrible reviews were proved dead wrong! So I salute you staff of Avalon Springs, it was the best birthday iv had since sweet 16
I will definatley be back!!
