When my wife and I were picking places to go on our honeymoon we blindly landed on picking the lower west coast of Costa Rica's pan-handle, mostly geared towards finding a beach town. After some research on where to stay, we came across Gumbo Limbo. Although our ride to this location requires a 4x4 vehicle, the arrival couldn't have been more worth the travel! The initial drive off the main road is up, and when I say up, I mean UP; 1st or 2nd gear in 4x4 mode.
The location is off of the busy road and requires a vehicle (or long walk) to get to the main road, but that is the allure of Gumbo Limbo. The views of the ocean are spectacular, while you sip on some delicious costa rican coffee and eat your morning breakfast, both of which are freshly prepared. The place also has a fully stocked bar, of which you are able to help yourself just as long as you keep tabs on your "servers bill" that they set up for you on day one.
The rooms are very clean and offer such a great view of the ocean, especially for sunset! The pool too is an amazing way to spend part of the hot high-noon hour.
Juan and Alejandro are some of the best hosts too! They are very attentive to your needs and can help with recommendations for eating/entertainment, as well as they will help organize anything you feel like doing out in Santa Teresa. Although we were not able to use him, Ale is a personal surfing instructor downtown; showing one of many trades that these guys have!
I would recommend this place for anyone who wants both the fun of santa teresa and the seclusion and views that the Costa Rican coast has to offer.

Room Tip: There are 2 really good rooms available on the top of Gumbo Limbo. they are the only ones with AC an...

After 10 days in Costa Rica and 5 different rooms, I can very gladly tell you that Juan and Gumbo Limbo were BY FAR our best lodging decision of the trip.

We stayed in one of the two single rooms, so this review is specifically about the rooms and not the villa. However, I poked my head into one of the villas, and those are even nicer than the room!

Juan is an incredible host. Check in was a breeze, and check out was simple. His recommendations on everything from surf spots (it was our first time so we needed extra help renting a board and finding an easy place) to restaurants were impeccable. The rooms are so clean, just spotless. The bed is comfortable and the sheets are immaculate. The balcony has THE MOST incredible view of the ocean, and we fell asleep every night with the sliding door open to feel the breeze, the sound of the water gently putting us to sleep. We were pleasantly surprised to find the bed turned for us while we we at the ocean on the 2nd day--that's an amenity I usually only expect at a traditional hotel, but it's just spectacular to come back to a made bed!

The infinity pool was the perfect place to unwind after an day of getting beat up by the sea, and the view of the ocean from there is just as incredible as it is from the balcony.

The partially outdoor shower is REALLY cool. It keeps the airflow moving in the whole room, and again, it's super duper clean and well appointed.

The hangout area/patio/breakfast seating for the room may be one of my favorite parts about this room. There are tables, bar stools, and laid back couches, most of which have overhead coverage to keep you from getting beat up by the sun. It's the best place to have breakfast (delicious, I might add!) or hang out after a day at the beach chatting with the other travelers. I met more interesting people in 3 days at Gumbo Limbo than the rest of our trip combined. So many airbnb places simply don't have a gathering place outside of the room itself, and I really appreciated the casual feel and excellent vibe of the patio. There in the public area with a refrigerator and freezer that can be used to store ice and drinks too.

The driveway is a bit intense, as noted. It's dusty and steep, but as long as you know how to drive your rented 4x4, you will be just fine. Parking felt very safe and secure at the top of the hill, which is huge. The beaches feel very safe, especially in comparison to some other beach towns we visited.

The towns of Malpais and Santa Teresa are super interesting. It feels a bit like the a surfing town combined with the Wild West, with dusty dirt road filleds with beautiful barefoot surfers. The restaurants in this area seemed a lot more cosmopolitan and international than the other beach towns we visited. We love to eat good food so that was very important to us!!

I can't wait to go stay with Juan again. Gumbo Limbo is the BEST.

Room Tip: All rooms have an incredible view and are very quiet and clean!

Gumbo Limbo was awesome! Our trip would no be the same if we stayed somewhere else. We were supposed to stayed 2 nights and end up there for four nights.

The hotel has an incredible view, a niiiiiice pool, breakfast was delicious, the rooms were clean and quite. The bed mattress is very comfortable, that was an extra plus for me and my husband.
Yes, 4x4 car is a must, the hill drive is steep!!

The host Juan is friendly and was extremely helpful. He suggested us places to eat, beaches to visit, waterfall and surf spots.

Santa Teresa town can get quite busy and it is a perk to be up the mountain away from the crowed and dust, yet only 8 minutes to the beach. La Lora was our to go surf spot and it's a beautiful beach too.

I highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Santa Teresa!!!

There is no better place to stay in Santa Teresa. While the driveway is a bit intimidating, the view is WELL worth it. The infinity pool overlooks the jungle and the beach. The outdoor bathrooms are so refreshing (I never wanted to shower inside again) and the entire villa had a "bringing the outside in" aura. Juan and Ale are great owners and extremely welcoming. They keep the place very well decorated and clean. The breakfasts are incredible. We stayed during Christmas and Juan cooked an Argentinian style dinner for us, the staff and other guests which was delicious and so fun! They are also incredible surf instructors.
I don't have a single negative thing to say about the experience. The photos don't do this paradise of a villa justice. I truly never wanted to leave.

We stayed 3 nights at gumbo limbo and loved every bit of it ! Juan was the best host, helped us with activities and restaurants, and even invited us for dinner on our first night and on a day trip the day after. Breakfast was awesome, with the best of views, though you will have to drive on very steep rocky roads to get there (4x4 is not an option !). There is no AC in the rooms, but you can pay extra to get a small villa. Nice pool, you really feel like you're in the jungle, plus there's a family of monkeys that lives nearby (we got to see them twice !). The wifi connection is slow and it takes a while for the water in the shower to get warm, but it's still worth every penny.

Room Tip: Best views !

I'm trying to think of how to explain gumbo limbo best... It's kind of like camping, but in a beautiful jungle overlooking the ocean.. Simply put, you have to experience it yourself.

First do yourself a favor and splurge on one of the villas, they are each very private up the hill from the hotel rooms/ breakfast restaurant. If you can get the 2br villa it overlooks the pool and the ocean below, as well as having the COOLEST outdoor bathroom ever.. If you're still reading that means you're okay with an outdoor bathroom, I mean fully outdoor, toilet, shower, everything... Don't worry it's private in the rear of the villa overlooking beautiful jungle, but you have to be okay with it. The 2 br also has amazing sliding glass doors that open to the amazing patio and views. The bugs can be a bit much at night, one night we made the mistake of leaving the lights on out on the patio and the doors open, when we came back we had a ton of bugs on the bed.. We managed to clear them out by turning the lights off. After that night we were smart, since we had brought headlamps we only used theme at night, no lights. The bugs never bothered us after that. To the point of where we slept with every door open on the last night, which was WONDERFUL hearing the ocean at night while you tried to fall asleep.

I did notice the 1br has AC but the 2 br does not, I don't get this decision and really could of used AC at times.. When the lessor of two rooms has ACit doesn't make sense.. Hopefully it get added someday.

I was only slightly disappointed that the pool was only half full, but what was there was green and not very inviting. The owner had explained there is a drought in Santa Teresa and this was the reasoning. We opted to not go in it during our stay, we were in Santa Teresa for the ocean not the pool.

Nacho (short for Ignacio) is the host up there and he was very accomodating exchanging numbers and making himself available for suggestions. Every morning he was there to serve us delicious breakfast of fruit, yogurt, rice/beans, eggs and avocado, seriously they over stuffed us each morning but it was delicious!

Lastly the road... It is as bad if not worse as all the others have warned... 4WD is a must! We had an SUV and still almost crashed once after rain. I wouldn't want to walk up or down this road either, 4WD SUV is a must!

If you can live with the drawbacks of gumbo limbo you will not be disappointed this place is something special I truly hope to come back someday!

Room Tip: Get the 2 br. If available
