We always come to YHA Helmsley, as we feel it is a home from home.

The place is always clean and tidy, and the kitchen is always clean. The cooked food provided by the hostel is always good and wholesome.

Will always be back here at least once, if not twice a year.

I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough. In August 2015 we stayed here for 4 nights as a family party of 10 hiring two private rooms. Our ages ranged from 4 to over 70 with a handful of teenagers thrown in. From the very minute we got there the staff, Neil and Catherine, were friendly, courteous and informative. This hard working pair kept the environment spotless and pointed us in the right direction whenever we needed advice.
The facilities were great – a play/TV room for the kids, next to the dining/social area that was practical and cosy especially when the sun went down. The kitchen for us, as self-caterers, had every amenity we needed whilst other guests availed of breakfast, evening meal and other refreshments purchased from the hostel. There is a sizeable garden around the hostel, mainly grass, where youngsters, from different tribes, could mingle and go of exploring together.
Helmsley is a wonderful small town, and it’s centre is a five minute stroll from the hostel. It is popular but not to the point of suffocation. It has two useful supermarkets, numerous bars and interesting cafes, two fish&chips shops and some interesting charity shops. The outside heated swimming pool, play park and associated fields are a 10 minute walk from the hostel and, at the time we were there – the height of summer, it wasn’t crammed but accessed by people of all ages.
The town is ideally situated for most things, Scarborough and Whitby are accessible along the most interesting roads and Thiske and York are near enough. The famous white horse and the walk to it along the summit of Sutton Bank from the facility rich National Park Centre, is well worth a visit – 10 mins drive from Helmsley.
We had a fantastic family holiday and our accommodation, Helmsley Youth Hostel, played a key part in ensuring the experience was a comfortable and affordable one. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Wifi was due to be installed the week after we left.

I stayed here on Saturday 4 July and the main selling point of this hostel was the food, which is unusual in an English YH. The dinner was possibly the best I had during my week in North Yorks, doing the Cleveland Way. Both my companion and I were thoroughly satisfied with our meal. Of course the food depends on who is cooking - the warden that night is obviously a very good cook! Again, the breakfast was excellent, mainly because the continental option was very generous, including items such as cheese and pains au chocolat, in addition to which you could have cooked breakfast. The latter was fairly standard youth hostel fare. The hostel is a short walk from the centre of Helmsley. On the downside, it is quite small, so it's difficult to get away from fellow guests, who can be quite loud!!

Excellent YHA
Neil and staff couldn't have been more helpful from the booking to our actual stay.
For the majority of us this was a first time
in a YHA.
Excellent food and comfy beds,
Safe lock up for the bikes as well.
Would definitely recommend and will book again.
Great weekend !

Mountain bike weekend away with Friends. It's only a small hostel but its in a good location for cycling, the hostel was very clean, with plenty of seating and the breakfasts were very good. The hostel was full while we stayed there, which made for a bit of a wait for showers and toilets.
