First class out of town Austrian hotel.

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 10, 2024via mobile
A traditional Austrian hotel situated on the outskirts of Bad Hofgastein. It is ideal if you have a car and parking is available. The ski bus stops are located at the hotel entrance way and the 552 bus (Every 15 minutes) goes up the hill to the Agertal ski area and takes 10 to 15 minutes. The 552 ski bus also goes down the hill and will take you a 10 to 15 minute trip to the bus station beside the Bod Hofgastein Ski Lift station where you can get a ski bus to Dorfgastein, or Sportgastein, or Badgastein. The skibus is covered by your ski pass if you are travelling wearing your ski gear, otherwise there is a cost for walk on travel. I recommend that you download and use the Sbg Verkehr App (Salzburg Verkehr) for live bus routes and times, as the bus service has a variety of timetables and routes depending on the time of year and some services do not run at certain times of the day or certain times of the year. It takes a good 30 minutes to walk from the hotel in to Bad Hofgastein and taxis are limited in availability. Wifi provision at the hotel is very poor and the 3G/4G data connection is very variable and often drops out. Mobile signal and data access on the ski areas is good.
The staff at the hotel are very helpful, friendly, and they all provide a first class service, however the use of English is limited so you should brush up on your basic German. Spa facilities and the swimming pool are very good and well maintained. Breakfast, afternoon post ski snack time (soup, bread, cold meat, cheese and cake) and dinner are excellent and again very Austrian. You pay for your drinks including tea and coffee in the afternoon and evening. The hotel has a well laid out dining room for buffet breakfast and a table service evening meal. Afternoon snacks and cakes are served in an afternoon dining room area with views of the mountains. The bar lounge area is delightful and there is an adjacent pool table room. The hotel has a good children’s play room with a good selections of toys. Our room was a family room with Austrian twin beds and two bed settees, a refurbished bath / shower room and a separate toilet. We had a room with a balcony with lovely mountain views. The ski room is reasonably spacious with storage for skis, snowboards ands boots with a boot drying provision. Access to the locked ski room in the basement is by using your room key card and access to the outside area is via an external doorway which is also operated using your room key card.
We had a very enjoyable week at the Zum Stern and would be pleased to stay there again. This is an ideal hotel if you like a peaceful relaxing environment, good food and an Austrian ambiance.
Date of stay: March 2024
Room Tip: Ideal if you have a car. Not suitable for those of you looking for appré ski town / village...

This might look like a "bought ad", but we fell totally in love with this place! Mostly for the personal, who paid so much attention to details, but also for the hotel it self. The beautiful breakfast (extra plus to the rich selection of gluten free options, the omelette bar and fresh pressed juices), the luxary spa (don't miss the herbal sauna!) and the homy and cozy dinner area. A bonus (which we did not reallize untill we were there) was that the hotel actually is really well located if you want to go skiing. The bus to Angertal leave every 10 minutes, right(!) infront of the hotell, and from Angertal you can reach the entire Bad Gastein and Badhofgastein ski area.
We will for sure be back!

Really nice hotel with good placement and spacious and bright rooms. Absolutely nice staff (incl. chief of staff), excellent wine card and very creative menues.
Swimming pool and wellness area (family and adult area available!) as well tasteful and inviting.
150Euro/single room incl. breakfeast, afternoon table and diner is high, but you get a real nice package for your money.

We came there between our destinations of Styria in Austria and France. Our booking was for 3 nights. Many good things to talk about. First thing, to come to the hotel, parking is easy. The hotel building has a nice wide regal entrance. We were shown a room, yes, shown (not send off!).... the front desk service actually walked with us and made sure that we were actually satisfied with the room, which we weren't. There was no bathtub in that particular room. So, we were offered an upgrade, and the next room was great! There was no extra charge and that is very appreciative upon first arrival after a long trip. The hotel furniture is nice, especially seating in the restaurant, but there is also a nice terrace with fantastic views. My wife took advantage of the spa area and she enjoyed it. There is a daily calendar of events for the hotel, which we didn't use, but on a longer stay should be considered. The food options for breakfast and lunch were plentiful, I liked especially the late lunch or afternoon snack as it's called. Once it came with really great dessert too. The dinner was with a reserved table. The food was ok. The owner of the hotel checked in with us several times, which is a nice gesture.

Now for some points why only 4 stars... for the dinner, the salad bar was nice, but for late arrival was not being refreshed. The same with the cheese bar. Very nice, a good arrangement, but was not being 'cleaned' up during the later period of the dinner. One mishap during the check-in was that we were given a coupon for spa services. When we asked what times would be available for the 3 days we were there, we were told that none were available and everybody is fully booked during the weekend, including Sunday. Why the coupon then? When we asked on Sunday morning if there were any cancellations, we were then told nobody works on Sunday, which seemed strange considering the answer we got the first day. Everybody in the restaurant works hard and tries to be there for everything, and tries to be nice on top of that, but it felt that most service personal are a bit strained. I guess some staff was missing, and others had to work double. It's not the service personals' fault, but it felt a bit stressed because of that. Overall, a very fine hotel with a lot of amenities!!

Had a wonderful week staying at this lovely, friendly and relaxing hotel. All the staff were so friendly and helpful, the food was fantastic, and the spa area was so relaxing after a day of exploring this beautiful area with the wonderful Ingrid on the guided walks. Claudia is so knowledgeable of the area and really gets to know all her guests and ensures everybody gets the most from their holiday and the lovely area of Gastein. This was a memorable stay in a lovely area of the world made possible by the fantastic staff at this lovely hotel, can’t wait to return.
