Went for a week's skiing with Crystal Ski. First time in Austria and we had picked this hotel as it was well situated in the resort. It is a 4 star year round hotel, well maintained and run, and was a great location in the spa town of Badhofgastein. Food was fine for breakfast with a very wide selection of cold dishes, breads and cereals. Dinner was a buffet with a very wide range of starters and salads followed by a choice of 4 hot dishes with veg and potatoes, sweets and cheese to finish. Plenty of choice and good friendly staff, Judith was excellent. Beer and wine was free in the restaurant area whilst dinner was on.
Boot room with heated pipes to dry out your boots.
Room was great with a balcony and was very quiet, very well looked after and pristine. If you do not want your room cleaned the following day they give you 2 tokens for a pre dinner drink in the bar. The bar area is quite large and the bar staff friendly, Martina especially. On 6 oo 7 evenings there was live music
The hotel has a great spa area with a large pool, jacuzzi, saunas etc all free for guests inc a towelling robe. We used this at the end of the day before dinner. The front desk staff were very helpful.
Access to the ski area was excellent with the 2 bus stopping right outside the hotel to take you to the bus station to connect with the funicular up to the Badhofgastein slopes or the buses to the other parts of the valley. If you stay on the 2 you get to Angertal which has gondolas either side of the valley and gives access back over to near the top of the Badhofgastein system. The 4 sub resorts have a wide range of runs and you can clock the miles up..... The buses all run on time and are frequent, download the timetable before you go.
Crystal were very good hosts, skis were from Intersport at the bus station, and if your flight from Salzberg leaves after 6 in the evening they run a bus into Salzberg for 24.5 Euros so you can spend about 5 hrs there before going to the airport. A great finish to the holiday.
Enjoyed the resort and hotel and would recommend both.

Room Tip: stayed in 408 a large double

On arrival at the Johannesbad Hotel Palace I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the room which was quite spacious by Austrian standards. It was clean and nicely furnished. Previous reviewers have complained that the rooms were too warm, fair comment, so I turned the radiator down. It's really not that difficult!

I enjoyed the spa every evening after a hard day skiing. There were two saunas, a steam room, an out door chilling area, very chilly in January :-) and a nice relaxation room. The jacuzzi was rather poor and usually occupied by small children but the pool was quite nice with plenty of loungers.

Customer service was excellent throughout. The reception staff were always polite and helpful and in the restaurant, no matter how busy the waitress Judith was always there to greet the guests nicely and was always happy, courteous and efficient.

For breakfast there was a hot option but frankfurters and streaky bacon are not to my personal taste and scrambled eggs tend to go a little hard when kept warm. However the rest of the buffet was amazing, with around 20 different types of bread and rolls, a dozen different cheeses, a selection of cooked meats, fruits, yoghurt and much more. There was something for everyone. The evening meals were also good with a variety of dishes all washed down with free wine or beer.

There is a ski/boot room downstairs but their is very little room to accommodate everyone and outside access is available using your room key ... which most people leave at reception.

I disagree with some reviewers who say this hotel does not deserve it's 4* rating it does. I did stay in a 4* hotel last year which was a little smarter but that was in St Moritz and cost twice as much!

This hotel was perfect as a base for skiing and I would not hesitate to use it again,

Like others we stayed here with Ski Club of GB. The hotel is old and the facilities tired. The buffet breakfasts and dinners were average and somewhat formulaic and boring. The spa is Ok - nothing spectacular - and do remember you are in Austria so no clothes are allowed in the Saunas/Steam room etc. What really frustrated us was the lack of service. No food could be purchase from the bar, no room service and no tea/coffee making facility's in the rooms. This hotel is being run on a tight budget and staff and servicing costs are being kept to a minimum. It's OK for a "package" holiday but I wouldn't choose to stay here and won't be returning by choice.

Just returned from a weeks skiing via crystal. Great room, food and wellness area. Ski bus right outside the hotel to take you to any of the villages to start a days skiing and drop you of at the end of the day. Amenities of the town just 5 mins walk away across the park. Buffet meals offered very good choice always hot and with enough choice for even the pickest of eaters. Nothing seemed to be to much trouble for the staff

Room Tip: Rooms away from the restaurant area are quieter, but the in-house music stop's around 10.30 so no real issue.

Do not stay here if you are under 60 yo. This hotel is extremely old fashioned, no room service, no mini bar, the staff and guest are all very old people which means there is no activity going on. fitness place, bar, and pool and sauna are all poorly equiped and staffed.
