The Mochlos Mare apartments are probably one of the best locations we have ever stayed at. Overlooking the sea in the small village of Mochlos, with wonderful family welcome. Fantastic views and comfortable accommodation with aircon, satellite tv and fast wifi. You will receive a wonderful welcome from the owners, and expect a few freebies.. Try the Bogazi Taverna in the village, where you can have your meal, with the sea lapping a few feet away. You will receive a warm welcome from Gabby and anolis

Mochlos is a tiny fishing village with a bit less fishing and more tourism nowadays but it still retains a small village feel and charm, which is missing from many of the larger beach area communities east of Heraklion. There are many nice looking choices of places to stay and 4 tavernas, the one on the point having the largest crowd, and from our experience and that of a Swedish family we met who had been in town for over 2 weeks, the best food in town and great prices. We checked with a few places that looked closed but most were willing to open up and most overnight prices in the smaller places were about 35 Euros. The Hotel Sophia on the waterfront had rooms that were only 25 Euros, a wonderful place for bargain hunters, but had only twin beds except for a room at the back. Most rooms were to the front and had a view to the sea, but the spotlessly clean rooms, although slightly apartment like in terms of supplies and furnishings, had smaller windows, which made them feel a bit dark, and an open shower with no curtain, which we noticed in one other place that we had carefully checked out. Mochlos Mare also had apartment rooms, but they had lots of large windows and were bright and cheery with colorful clean modern curtains, tasteful decorations, fresh paint and art. The owners were immediately cozy, smiley and warm, and as soon as we bartered for a 40 Euro price instead of the 50 Euro that they originally asked, which did not seem to cause them any concern, the wife was busy freshening up the room with cut fresh flowers from her garden, and then soon after appeared with a fresh bowel of pomegranate seeds for us to nibble on during our evening stay. They had a fabulous pomegranate tree in their expansive garden around the house with some of the largest pomegranates we had ever seen. The seeds were sweeter, fresh off the tree, than any we had ever eaten. The apartment, as expected, was clean with tile floors throughout. They had a small corner shower, but to our delight it had a complete curtain (no wet slippery floor on trips to the sink or toilet -- hooray). As was becoming typical, there was no outlet for a shaver in the bathroom. The large closets contained lots of clean, modern fluffy blankets and 2 extra pillows, which we love for sitting in bed and reading as well as sleeping. The older style TV had a great picture and must have had a great satellite service connection since there were at least a dozen English channels. The apartment (#108) had 3 rooms, one for sitting with the TV, a couch, and table and chairs; a room with the bed and a small kitchen adequately stocked plus with a hot plate, electric kettle, and fridge; and a normal size bathroom. The sitting room was toward the front and opened through large French doors onto a large balcony with chairs and a table overlooking the gardens, vineyard and beautiful bay view. What a great spot for happy hour on our last night in Crete! There was private parking along the small road near a "pocket garden" across the road that also belongs to the house. It is only a 5 minute walk into the village for great Taverna food. However, none of them are really breakfast places and none open for coffee until 8 AM. There is, in addition to the kitchen in the unit, what appears to be a small communal cooking and drinking area behind the house where it might be possible to cook up a breakfast as well. Three cheers for them since they also had a true double bed, no sleeping on the crack once again, with a medium firmness mattress that compared to the seeming Greek standard of "very firm" felt very comfortable. With windows on the sea, and windows on the bedroom or hill side of the apartment, there were wonderful through breezes all night. The modern AC unit was not tried. There is no luggage rack but lots of space to put luggage especially if you are staying a while. The bed has no side table on one side of bed and no reading lights, but the central ceiling light is adequate for any purpose. There are first floor garden units available if stairs are a problem. Both members of the owner couple were very sweet and would clearly have done anything we needed for help. She talks rapid fire, often with a lovely mix of mostly Greek and some English, but his English is wonderful and he is obviously used to translating for her. There is free high speed, password controlled, WiFi. This was an emotional high point to the end of a glorious trip.

Our final stop on our Cretan tour, and the best. We arrived to find our apartment and balcony filled with vase of scented roses and the view over the garden and sea was delightful. Little treats were left on our balcony throughout our stay, fresh figs and grapes, raki, and, best of all, delicious cake fresh from the oven. Our host invited us to drink his homemade raki under the pomegranate tree one evening. The apartment was well equipped and comfortable with a balcony front and back and very efficient air conditioning. The scented garden was a special pleasure. Highly recommended.

We are very thankful to Silignaki family for a beautiful week we spent in Mochlos Mare in this September. The hospitable hosts, the comfortable and lovely apartment, daily breakfast on balkony with a view on the Aegean see, garden full of flowers and fruits, and, particularly, evening conversations with the owners of this lovely place, homemade wine and raki made our holidays really special and unforgetable.
