“Great Family Home, Amazing Views”

Greetings Traveller!

I would like to state that this is the first time that I have been so inspired as to decide to write a review of a product, service, or in this case, experience. Assumingly as you are doing, our search for a great place to stay in Norway was extensive. As Norway is so full of amazing scenery at every turn, there are options dotted across the Western Fjords. However, the picture from the deck of Wildair was just striking, with Geiranger Fjord seemingly right off the deck. There are two main points of this review – that which you can discern from the photos and what you cannot quite learn from the Wildair description.

Bente, the owner, has put an extensive and very representative set of pictures on Trip Advisor to illustrate her home and the surrounding area. What you see in the pictures is exactly what you will find. Her Wildair home is three floors of beautifully decorated rooms with modern convenience, a huge deck, and of course unparalleled views. Everything you could need is there: a full sized kitchen with so many amenities, laundry room, plenty of linens, etc. But the little things are what really stand out – a library with maps and relevant books, a wonderful music collection, an instruction manual that literally answered every question we had about every appliance or system – living in Wildair feels remarkably like living in your own home.

This brings me to the other point of the review.. what you cannot learn from the description. That is namely, Bente, the owner. Bente could simply not be friendlier or more welcoming. She was gracious in answering all of the questions that we had about her home, about the area, and about Norway in general. She genuinely wants to ensure that her guests have a remarkable stay in her home. It would seem that Bente’s primary intention in renting her home out is to ensure that her visitors (guests) have a the chance to experience the splendor of Geiranger Fjord in the closest thing to your own home that is probably possible.

Geiranger town itself is a charming place, filled with friendly residents, a grocery store and a great bakery. One especially fun activity in town – the E-Mobility electric cars that can be rented to explore the town and surrounding overlooks. Wildair home actually sits atop the start of the Waterfall Walk, a staircase/path next to a waterfall that cascades down the hill right in town. The home and town are both so well suited to families.

Prior to happening upon her home on Trip Advisor, we did not know Bente F. I state this because with no criticisms or concerns in this review, I would like to offer that this is simply an earned position. I would suggest that you will likely find that after staying at Wildair, you will remember the experience as one of the most amazing places you have ever stayed, and one which will leave an indelible impression…once the ships set sail after a their day in Geiranger, and you enjoy a quiet and peaceful Geiranger Fjord evening, with a 270 degree panorama from your deck, kitchen, or sitting room…

“Even Better Than It Looks”

This was our first trip to Norway. Our week, at Wildair in Geiranger, was the best part of our 19-day trip. We appreciated Wildair all the more after a 6-night stay in a far inferior apartment in Flam.

With just two of us, our first challenge was picking which of the three bedrooms with great views we should use. We settled on the one on the main floor. The top floor was warm because we had an amazing week of perfect sunny warm weather when we were expecting more typical cloudy and cool. You may want a sleep mask in that upper fjord-facing bedroom because of the expansive windows. The lower bedroom is blocked a bit by the hot tub, but would be handy if it was really hot because it's wonderfully cool down there (unless you turn on the heat).

All of the ground floor rooms - kitchen, dining room, and living room - afford wonderful views of Geirangerfjord, as do the upstairs bedrooms and upstairs and downstairs decks. The entire house, including the decks, is comfortably furnished. We truly appreciated the full-service kitchen as it saved us from having to eat out every evening.

The European appliances took a bit of getting used. The kitchen stove is powered by magnetic induction, which we had not experienced before. You have to be careful to use cookware matching the burner size or there will not be enough induction demand to keep the burner running. Once you understand this, the stove performs brilliantly - heating fast without the stove top becoming hot. We also appreciated having a washer and dryer to keep our small wardrobe of travel clothes clean. Starting the grill on the deck was a bit of a challenge, but I managed it twice. Once lit, it performs like our Weber at home.

The goats in the adjoining farm were fun to watch (especially the salt lick at the end of the drive). We noticed no odor from them in spite of the goats being so close.

We were disappointed by the condition of the hiking trails we sampled - muddy and rocky, more like trampled goat paths than constructed hiking trails. When leaving, we learned from our host Bente that a few of them have been upgraded. If you are accustomed to high-quality North American Rocky Mountain hiking trails, be sure to inquire about which trails have been upgraded.

Bente is a charming host, proud of her home and anxious that you enjoy it. She provides a useful handbook to help you understand the appliances and provides other information about the house and the outside environs. She appreciates feedback about what her visitors like and think could be improved.

Downstairs tenant Martin was delightful. I wish we could have spoken to him more about Norway and the school where he teaches. It was especially fun to run into him while waiting for our order at a restaurant in town. That conversation made us feel like we were part of the community. I hope he's still there for your stay.
