We had 3 days stay here on half board and enjoyed it before moving on to the sister hotels apartment up the road. Excellent friendly staff and a great choice of food both for breakfast and dinner. The room did not face the sea but we did not book one so could not complain and the view was OK. The hotel is situated perfectly for the lovely town of ALVOR. The entertainment was not up to Pestanas usual standard but every thing else was perfect.

We have just returned from a week at the Pestana Dom Joao II Hotel near Alvor after previously staying three times at its nearby sister hotel the Pestana Delfim.
We fell out with the Delfim because it now only offers ‘full board’ and there is no longer an a-la-carte service in the evenings.
But we will not be using the Dom Joao II again either.
A maxim for receptionists is that they are the first contact with clients.
We arrived at the hotel to find two males on reception. The first was booking in a pair of new guests so we turned to the second. However, so that he could continue with some paperwork, he waved us to join the queue for his colleague. (His paperwork seemed to be more important than the guests). His colleague was having considerable difficulty not only booking in the pair but also explaining and arranging golf bookings for them.
After a good 15 minutes, during which the second receptionist looked up a number of times and must have seen the problem his colleague was having, another group of new guests arrived and now the second receptionist decided to attend to us and finally we got to our room. Mistake. We had booked a sea-view room and the one we were given was a room with an inland view over the car park, road and shrub land.
So back to reception. This time the first receptionist. We pointed out the mistake. There was no apology just a repeated assertion that Jet2.com Holidays must have made a mistake and he would have to make a phone call. Finally we were allocated another room. It had taken at least 45 minutes to book in.
Now to open the room safe with the code they had given. No the code did not work so back down to reception. The first receptionist, give him his due, came up to our room to sort out the safe.
I know what it says on the web-site but previous to our departure from the UK we had emailed the hotel to check that there were hairdryers in each room. ‘Yes.’ was the reply. ‘Each room has a hair dryer.’ But there was none in our room so back down to reception to borrow one from there.
The room was very pleasant and clean, except for the large stain on the carpet at the bedside and stains on the material shade on a column light. However, there are no facilities to make a cup of tea or coffee, in the rooms.
We had booked half-board and were told that we could change our evening meal to lunch but there was a 15 euro limit as lunch time was a-la-carte. (A salad or a pizza costs 11 to 12 Euros , drinks are charged separately and the normal charge for evening meal is about 40 Euros.) There are no facilities for coffee at the evening meal, this must be obtained in the bar and paid for separately.
Bar drinks are expensive.
The hotel attracts many golfers and groups of golfers. Normally I have nothing against golfers but we were woken on three nights at 2am, by them shouting down the corridor outside our room, their ‘Goodnight’s and arrangements for the following day. They filled lifts intended to take up to 9 people with three golfers and their golf bags and on one evening they filled the reception area with themselves and their golf bags so that we had to pick our way to the doors.
All these niggling points are a shame as the hotel has a lot going for it. They give the impression that the hotel does not put its guests first and could be easily corrected. The food is good, but not as good as it was at the Delfim. There is little fresh fruit but plenty of tinned fruit and plenty of salad. The orange juice is surely not fresh. The hotel is generally very clean and most of the staff are pleasant and helpful. The setting is wonderful with a large pool area and large areas of grass with shrubs and trees for shade and the beach is no more than 100m from the hotel.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms face inland.

This hotel has so many reviews even I was sceptical at first before I arrived last week!
Firstly- I stay in hotels as part of my job - all over the world - I'm long and short haul air crew and have been for 15 years.
So I will only give factual information based on all the gripes and moans and pros I've read on the place - firstly - hotel is clean, welcoming, everything you would expect.
Rooms are nice, yes some rooms do overlook a car park - some don't - bear this in mind! Who wants to sit in a hotel room anyway? Yes the pillows are lumpy - I took my own! Maid service is excellent fresh bedding every couple of days. Maids never woke us up at all during our stay!
Bar drinks are expensive - problem solved - go elsewhere, you are on holiday! Alvor is lovely - just take the 15 min walk into town it's no big deal!
Various supermarkets only a stroll away.Pingo Doce is the best one it's a 20 min walk but no hassle - stock up on your wine beer fruit etc,the resort shop is obv treble the price. But just get a five litre water from there it's only a euro, and just fill your bottles up for the beach every day.
Rooms don't have a kettle - we take a travel kettle and bought milk and water - I always take my own teabags - I need constant cups of tea of a morning and night!
We also take a travel iron and travel hairdryer. Pretty organised seasoned travellers - saves moaning about what you do and don't have in a room! No the Pestana doesn't have any of the latter three so I do advise you pack them.
Breakfast is great - of course it's the same - its breakfast! What do you want chips and peas?! Every morning was a fantastic range of various breads, cheeses, fruits, cereal, jams, yoghurts, pastries etcetc - plus the eggs bacon sausage for the Brits - its Portugal - its not British sausage and bacon - go to Benidorm for that. All self service, coffee and tea on tap plus juices. All you need really!
Great gym, lovely spa, sauna and steam area. Large outside pool. Can imagine the place is very packed in season that's why I prefer out of season.
No gripes with any staff - all friendly.
Yep plenty of golfers and older folk here, so what? Yep so the golf bags may be scattered around the place from time to time - people go on holiday to enjoy thier hobbies - we kitesurf - maybe that annoys some too!
So basically to avoid any disappointment take travel essentials - kettle iron hairdryer and squash a pillow in the top of your case and simply leave it there like I did - a basic pillow in Tesco costs about £3 - I would rather pay that than have a lumpy pillow!
All rooms have a small balcony, we had a triple room as we have a baby, the double rooms are smaller - but all very clean, tidy, fresh towels etcetc. Not large rooms by all means - but it's for sleeping in not for living in-you should be out and about not wasting time in a hotel room!
I would go back - in fact I'm just looking for an out of season deal as I type........

Room Tip: Some rooms are over a car park - some are sea or garden view - depending on high or low season and y...

Loacted on the beach this is one really nice hotel.

Liked. Room was amazing, spotless, spacious, bright. Sea View is worth the extra. The view has to be seen to be believed. We woke each morning thinking we had died and gone to heaven.
Large grounds very well maintained. Large outdoor pool, nice inside pool, sauna etc.

Reception and rooms service fantastic. Freindly and efficient.

The standard of Alvor Resturants is world class class. (Dinner for 2 and wine for €30 to €40.)

Disliked. Entertainment,& Reaturant was poor. Breakfast was not to our taste. Large choice, but spicy cocktail sausages and rasher every second day and probably the worst orange juice on the planet.

Would I stay ther again and would I reccomend it. Yes, in a second.

Room Tip: Sea view 3rd to 5th floor.

My wife , 2 daughters , grandson had a one week stay in Pestana Dom Joao 11. This was our 4th trip to Alvor and our first stay in Dom Joao .. From the time we arrived we had a thoroughly excellent stay . This was due in no small way to the excellent staff all of whom were courteous and friendly at all times ...

Room Tip: Any room is good . Obviously beach facing rooms have a much better view .

Visited the Dom Joao in April 2012. We were first given a side sea view and after reading previous revues requested to be moved due to the building work on the villas. Although there were no rooms available straight away the receptionist was very helpful and organised a room on the third floor with a forward facing seaview the next morning. No complaints after the move as the view was terrific. We had bed and breakfast at the hotel and I would advise you to do likewise after visiting the numerous restaurants in Alvor centre which are fantastic value for money with excellent food. The Dom Joao is kept spotless throughout for the indoor Turkish bath in the basement area to the gardens and surroundings. The evening entertainment is pretty woeful to be honest and with the extortionate prices at the bar - 10 euros for a large beer with a large coke - people aren't encouraged to stay in at night. With some bars in Alvor pricing large beers at 1 euro the Dom Joao can just be used as a base.
All in all I wouldn't hestitate in returning to this hotel as it is in a great location next to the spotless beach and close to the caves and only a 10 minute walk from the resort centre and its multitude of restaurants, snack bars and shops.

Room Tip: Front sea view a must.

On arrival check-in managed to work everything out reasonably well even though they seemed slightly confused that 1 person was lead name but 12 in party. Rooms were great although we had good view of the car park and the balcony this time of year gets about 10 min of direct sunlight. could benifit from kettle in room too.

Breakfast was average at best, luke warm bacon, eggs and beans. small hotdog type sausage and usual continental farye. Beer price in the bar 4 erous for local superbock lager( not the best in the world) in town this will set you back 1.50 euro. 4 euro will get you a great guiness in town,

a few great eateries in the town too, but harbour front fish resteraunts pricey.

didn't stop in hotel to sample entertainment as either playing golf (great courses) or out on town,

all in all not bad, a place to lay your head
