Stayed for 4 nights from 10th Jan. lovely hotel and grounds. Practically on the beach. View from 5th floor is amazing but if you don't have a sea view room you can chill on the chairs/sofa on the 5th floor lobby instead. I always go to Alvor out of season for the peace and quiet. Would stay at this hotel again.

We come to Alvor all the time , its a resort we love , but this was the first time we came for the Christmas period . It was also the first time we stayed at the Dom Joao 11 . We checked into the hotel late in the evening and where shown to our room on the 3rd floor. We had a room on the front of the hotel and our balcony overlooked the car park , if you want a sea view you should book a specific room . The sea view rooms are on the back of the hotel over looking the gardens then onto the beach. First impressions of the hotel were good , it was lovely and clean and beautifully decorated for Christmas. The staff where welcoming and friendly. Our room was reasonably sized with a private bathroom , we had a bath with over head shower. rather odd there was a window in there covered with a roller blind that opened up onto the bedroom , but it made for some fun and it did let some day light in should we choose to share our bathing and toileting for each others view! odd but amusing!
The beds were comfortable and we had plenty of room in them , I would say they are a 3/4 and we had 2 of then pushed together so it made for a super king size. Everything was very clean and fresh and the room had plenty of storage space with a big wardrobe and drawers built into the entrance corridor as you came into the room. We had plenty of hangers too , which is always a complaint of mine( that there's never enough of them, I always end up bringing my own.) we had a free safe and mini fridge in the room , but NO tea of coffee making facilities , I brought a travel kettle and some cups to make our own , would be nice of there was a full sized kettle but I guess they want you to go down to the bar area and pay for drinks. disappointing that a 4 star hotel doesn't provide any drink making facilities in the room , it isn't our usual experience but hey ho. My advice , don't forget to pack a travel kettle and 2 mugs along with you tea bags and coffee!
As it was too late to go and venture into the village for dinner we ate in the hotel restaurant, the last service finished about 9.30pm and was a buffet style dinner. We were impressed by the varied menu, there where fish , chicken, vegetarian mains as well as various salads , soups , breads . It cost us 20 euros each with an all you can drink beer , ( though it was pretty horrible beer and after so much food you'd be hard pressed to drink much more than 1 pint ) we could have selected house wine but we stuck with beer on the first night. The food was plentiful and nicely served . I would only add that if it had been hotter it would have been nicer , however we did get there late , so not sure how long it had been under the warming cabinets and we wouldn't have chosen to go and eat so late but we arrived late after the transfer from the airport. After dinner we went into the bar area where there was lounge and stage set up for a singer playing the guitar , very pleasant and a nice background . The bar made great cocktails , but as of most hotels pretty pricey.
We ate breakfast the following morning in the same dining area , and once again there was a varied choice , you really would be very very picky if you couldnt find something you liked here. The choice was endless , cereals , meats cheeses , a hot cooked breakfast , an omelette chef who made to order from what you asked for , a pancake chef, fresh cakes pastries , salads , fruit , juices , tea, coffee ( from a machine and instant so not so great here ) Luckily i drink Tea ! The bar area served real barrista styled coffee but that wasn't included in the bed and breakfast price which we had.
The hotel staff in the dining room were constantly clearing and cleaning areas so it was kept fresly stocked of stuff and was clean and tidy quickly. There was a faded grandieur of the place . It was a little tired but on the whole perfectly adequate.
The facilities of the hotel were good and everything was open during the christmas period , Christmas eve dinner closed a little earlier as its traditionally when the Portugese people enjoy their own family celebrations. we used the heated pool on Christmas day and the sauna, steam room. A really lovely pool and spa area, but it could have been cleaner . The sauna wasnt very clean , and the steam room was so over mentholated with olbas oil or eucalyptus you could hardly open your eyes in there never mind breathe. I lasted about a minute before I had to come out. The pool was nice and warm and there was lots of seating area to use with loungers around it. Hotel gave you a towel voucher to use for the day too , so you could collect fresh towels to use from the spa reception. There were various spa treatments on offer but we didn't use any of them so cant comment on how good they were. They were however very expensive ,( the village has a far better price for such things in the various places dotted around town.) The changing rooms and showers very clean.
There is so much i could say about the hotel but a general over view works better , good facilities , great location , friendly staff and nice and clean in most areas.
Would we come here again for another stay YES , would we come again at Christmas YES .
The only thing I would say , is if you're a party animal and want lots of things going on , don't come to Alvor at Christmas , its pretty sleepy at this time of year and quiet. There are many of the seasonal places closed up , and a lot of places are being revamped decorated for the following season starting. Its a completely different vibe at Christmas but still charming and we still love it. If you want peace, tranquillity and some winter sunshine with long sunny days and fresh air , then DO come to Alvor its beautiful. The coast line is amazing and beach boardwalk stretches for miles. You can walk without getting your feet wet or sandy if you want. If its a break away from a cold grey UK in the throng of commercialism that is Christmas , its a perfect place to come and escape to.

Room Tip: higher floors have a better view , we were on the 3rd floor and overlooked the car park . sea view rooms are at the back of the hotel.

just had another enjoyable stay at the Dom Joao hotel, room and service was excellent. location of hotel is right on the beach giving access to the boardwalk which is over 5 miles long ideal for walkers. Alvor is a 10 min walk away with plenty of bars and restaurants.

We love Alvor and staying at the villa within the hotel complex gives us great access to the beach and only a short walk to the town . Lovely fishing village with plenty of options to chose where to eat . Villa is a great size 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms a bit dated but does the job well . Serviced regular just like staying in a hotel room.

The hotel is in a good position, very clean, lovely staff, local bus outside the door, also courtesy bus daily. Free safe, fridge in room but no kettle or hairdryer; paid extra for seaview and worth it. Room 317 was quiet but bad internet reception and not often cleaned before 14:30.
The breakfasts where okay, don't mind continental, did try the bacon and eggs etc one day but not to my taste. I was there for 2 weeks on half board but the food at dinner was of such poor quality and not hot that I asked my rep to change it to B&B for the second week. I got this changed but was told I had to go in for the New Years Eve meal, probably didn't want to reimburse me for that, it cost 160 Euros!!! The food was no better than any other night, except for seafood, free wine and was not waiter service, the menu read like a dream but was a fairy tale, the band drowned out any conversation, one of the worst meals I have ever had. There where very few nights when entertainment was on so it was a case of amusing yourself. Wouldn't recommend this time of year for singles, as I was, though I met some very friendly guests. I realise it will be a completely different holiday in summer when the nights are lighter and you are not stuck in your room for hours.
