“Relaxing break in a good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2012

For a relaxing break the Parador is very well located in Brena Baja on the west of the island within 15 minutes drive from Santa Cruz and the airport and is set in beautiful gardens.
There is a local bus service from a bus stop at the bottom of the drive but we found that a hire car was essential to explore the island.
This was our first stay in a Parador and it lived up to the expectations gleaned from reading reviews on TA and elsewhere.
We chose a superior room with full sea view which was very spacious and included a couple of armchairs , a sofa , a coffee table and a dressing table plus TV, a minibar and a safe. The balcony was also spacious.
In the main we ate out but on the one occasion when we dined at the hotel the quality of the food was good the service was also good and the dining room itself was well appointed.
The only criticism was that the electrics were outdated and several of the wall sockets worked erratically and it took a long while to get hot water.
As commented on by other reviewers the swimming pool was extremely cold during our stay at the end of March.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a full sea view

We have stayed in many Paradors on mainland Spain and we chose to stay here as part of a packaged walking holiday because of our previous experience in Paradors. Firstly this is a fairly modern Parador and although it was built in a traditional style it does not have the wow factor of many other Paradors. Secondly, we were in a group with special inclusive facilities and so we cannot comment on the a la carte food in the restaurant. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The room (and bed) was comfortable and the bathroom up to the usual Parador standard (although no bidet). The internal walls are not well sound proofed although this did not prevent our sleeping well. Generally the electrics looked a bit dodgy and when we arrived we could not go to our room because a maintenance man was repairing the master switch in our room. Breakfast was similar in quality and range to other Paradors that we have stayed in recently. The gardens are extensive and beautiful. We did not use the pool and because the saunas were gender segregated my wife and I did not take sauna. Also you cannot go directly from sauna to pool and there is no plunge pool and the shower is next to the toilet facilities. The hotel is some distance from both Santa Cruz and Los Cancajos and you would not want to walk back uphill after a meal or in in the dark so it is taxi time from Los Cancajos and bus from Santa Cruz. We were there to walk and our package included the transport to take us to great walking country. There are not many hotels on La Palma and before booking you should consider your options carefully to meet your particular needs .

Room Tip: Not all the rooms have a full sea view as it is are partially obscured by by other blocks.

We have had a recent stay in this Parador at Santa Cruz.- La Palma. Unlike many of the Paradors it is a modern purpose built hotel with the bedrooms in three blocks, all with superb far sea views . If we hadn't booked with a tour company we would have requested a superior room, which are larger and better appointed. Ours in the ?lower category was large, comfortable with ample clothes storage, two easy chairs and coffee table with fruit and water. Of special note was the lighting the bedside lights were bright and and were on a swivel arm it was a joy to be able to read comfortably in bed. So many hotels these days go for mood lighting and you can hardly see each other let alone a book!! Kept very clean although the grouting in the bathroom could do with some attention.
The public spaces were lovely with an indoor garden, with seating, off which was the breakfast room, lounge and restaurant always with white linen tablecloths and napkins. The food was good and at breakfast there was a good selection to suit all tastes with good coffee The outdoor gardens were simply beautiful with many plants labelled fot the benefit of gardeners and botanists, but it was all on a very steep gradient. The pool was cold at that time of year but was well sheltered with beds and chairs and we were able to spend time lying in the sun. There is a huge terrace outside the dining room and bar with furnishing well spread out - must be gorgeous in the summer with the view. There is a games room with sofas and card tables and computer. I felt the lounge could be more sumptiously furnished - it was very ordinary.
The bus stops on the main road to Santa Cruz every half hour - enjoyable little town. We got a taxi back for €7 well worth it to save the climb up from the road to the hotel.

We followed the advice of Gill Charlton in the Saturday Telegraph newspaper and stayed here for a week's walking holiday in February; it was an excellent choice. La Palma is a little-visited Canary Islands because of its lack of beaches and tourist infrastructure: but this makes it all the more attractive to us, and also very cheap: only one car park made a charge and we only had to pay one entrance fee-to San Antonio volcano..
The Parador is located a few km outside the tiny, compact and rather beautiful capital, Santa Cruz, an old fashioned city and port with only a very small selection of restaurants and bars and little night life. So if you stay there independently you really need a hire car: there is a bus stop nearby but services are infrequent. It's a lovely building, with a kind of colonial-era style. Rooms are large, with wardrobe, shelves, TV, armchairs and little table; balcony with table and chairs. Try to get a sea view room rather than one facing the interior of the property. There is an excellent bathroom, possibly recently updated with two basins, separate loo and bidet and a bathtub as well as a shower - excellent if you have been walking, as is the sauna. The swimming pool unfortunately is not heated so was not an asset at this time.
We did not eat in the restaurant as we preferred to try out rural eateries at the end of our walks- we recommend the book "Walk! La Palma" by Charles Davies, lots of good itineraries perfect for car drivers who prefer a circular walk - you can get it off Amazon) but the Saga group looked as though they were enjoying their meals. There's a bar - not particularly cosy only used before dinner really and various lounges and a games room, again not much used. The clientele seemed to be German, British and Spanish, mostly of a mature age group.
Service eg at the reception is not unfriendly but they don't go out of their way to make you feel welcome, that is fine for us but others might prefer a more pro-active approach.
The island is enchanting, you can be staring into a snow-crusted volcano in the morning and on the small black sand beach at Puerto Tazacorte (the best, a local, Mediterranean style place with lost of restaurants but no hotels, a few shops). However if you are not a walker I am not sure I would recommend it; you'd miss out on the best sights which are accessible only by the magnificent and comprehensive network of footpaths, many with good signage put in during the last couple of years. It is much sunnier on the west than the easy side of the islands by the way but the island is so small you can easily pop across to the west for a bit of sun even when based in the east, as this hotel is.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the sea/pool

I find this Parador, very good in general. The location is good in terms of landscape and views, but not so good, in terms of distance from the city center (about 7 km). But the concept of Parador, is out side city centers.

I remember that I didn`t reserve a car rental service, before I get there, and when I did, in airport no cars where available, fortunately the taxi driver who I call to let us in the Parador, worked for a rental car company, and manage to find a car, and next day they left the car in the hotel at our disposal, five stars service...

Room Tip: Just ask for a 2nd floor room with ocean view, and I´m shure they will manage to put you in a good r...

Such a shame we only had one night - I would have happily stayed for a week. The peace and quiet up on the hillside where the Parador is found is totally undisturbed. There is no annoying music in the bar when you have a drink on the terrace overlooking the sea and Santa Cruz. There is no "entertainment" either round the pool or anywhere else which makes it just perfect.

The facilities are faultless, both in the room and around the hotel, lots of parking, friendly reception and bar staff, incredible views (try and ask for a room in the front building - some of the rear rooms don't have such good views), spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and it's also well signposted from the centre of Santa Cruz so you can't get lost.

Other than trying a casa rural and self-catering, I wouldn't stay anywhere else on our next visit.

Room Tip: Second floor in the front building.

Without resorting to cliches, it is hard to fault this most comfortable hotel on La Palma. No one pretends that this is a five-star glitzy destination but if you want a quiet place to escape to from the northern winter, this is a very good choice. It is most reasonably priced, with breakfast for two thrown in. Paradors are great choice for the discriminating traveller, with no noisy folk to annoy you by day or keep you awake at night. While the rooms are not 100% soundproofed, they pass muster.

Take plenty of reading matter with you, there is not a great deal to do and the hotel is rather isolated, although if you are hiker, it may be just what you want. There is a local bus that passes by which will take you to the town of Santa Cruz, This has some interesting 18th-century buildings. The Parador should of course organise a courtesy shuttlebus, as this would be more convenient. The swimming pool should be heated, too, as it is far too cold to swim in for part of the year, except for masochists,

The rooms are however very well-appointed, the beds neither too soft or too hard, the pillows just right. A fair-sized room, with a balcony and seaview complete the picture. The bathroom is well up to standard. There is Wi-Fi accessible throughout the hotel even in your room.

The restaurant is very much as you would expect in the Parador, with reliable menus at a reasonable price. They could however have been changed more extensively on a daily basis but the choice was adequate. The local wine is also recommended and is not too expensive.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the chambermaid top-notch. We would stay here again without hesitation but maybe at a later date. The sister Parador in La Gomera is perhaps a little more atmospheric but it's 'horses for courses', as they say!
