I didn't stay at the hotel, but visited for a massage. Tucked back off the main road, it's like the spa is built into the trees. After a little climb up into the spa room, I felt like I was in another world. The room was built around a jackfruit tree. The massage was truly relaxing and the sound of the birds (the only sound I could hear) just about lulled me to sleep. The staff was so kind and attentive. It was a great massage.

It is actually 2 min walk from the beach but it is 100% worth it.
The calm of the place, the peaceful pool like a little oasis, the professionalism of the staff, the yoga class in the morning, the hearty buffet breakfast make this hotel the perfect place to stay. And you can even enjoy some ayuredic sessions.
It is just 20 min from the beautiful galle, do not hesitate to visit the fort at sunset and you will be transported at the colonial times.
I will not forget the sincerity of the manager that ran after us because we payed too much. Sir, bohome istuti!

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the main residence and not in the annexe. The beds can be a little noisy.

Beautiful hotel with very comfortable and nicely furnished rooms. Nice swimming pool in a jungle-like cosy surrounding. Great hospitality, service and food. Walking distance from the beach but far enough to be quiet. Wifi could be improved but maybe being disconnected it is part of the retreat experience after all :-) Highly recommended

Unawatuna is a crowded place so that quiet or even secluded accommodation is not easy to find. We wanted something tranquil and with above-Sri-Lanka-average quality (rooms, bathroom, balcony). Thambapanni provided this and it was good to have been careful about selecting the right room category. Their system is a bit confusing from an International perspective as, e.g., the Grand deluxe category is below the superior one. We strongly recommend these upper categories as some of the standard and basic rooms are dark or small or in the building across the road.

Our Grand deluxe room was spacious including an excellent bathroom (stone) and a large balcony with a roof that allowed us to stay outside even during tropical rainfall. The furniture was much better quality than usual (balcony chairs, bed, closet) – except for the sofa – and they offer tea and coffee in the room. Thick towels, very good aircon plus fan and a drying rack (on the balcony) completed the good impression. Minor flaws included the absence of an umbrella (which was supposed to be there and wasn’t provided over two days), smell from the kitchen below and an intransparent booking system (they offered different ‘last available’ rooms / categories than some portals). Added-value came from their own taxi which we booked: Good price, fantastic driver – friendly and knowledgeable.

The morning yoga class was always quite busy (on a large open terrace above the restaurant) as was the small pool (usually occupied by families with small children or senior guests). Breakfast was a below the average quality: While they do offer the usual fresh fruit, toast and some sweets, the tea (bags!) and coffee (not filtered!) were terrible, the omelet was milky and the juices did not have the ‘pure and fresh’ taste that is quite usual for Sri Lanka.

Overall, we could not confirm any of the critics we had found online prior to booking. We do recommend Thambapanni (within the described framework).
