“Lovely location but not a 5*”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

Visited as a family. Lovely drinks on arrival and such helpful staff ie grit, and concierge. Rooms very spacious but beds uncomfortable for both of us. Bathrooms exceptional. Heated hotel pool was freezing so children stayed out as well as adults. Food ok, lovely chef who said enjoy. Batak, Jose, manuel, Christina and alexander fab as well as others. Buffet repetitive so ate out on last night, just after a week. Entertaiment was underfunded but I will say the animation staff in regard of this were exceptional, Nicole, Helena, Marta, Daniel etc! You are all stars. We ate at the oriental restaurant and had to leave our meal as full of salt. Resort of playa blanca, lovely. Walks and beaches lovely. Rock pools for the children.

Overall more 4*, staff made this holiday, so kind. I think we may be biased as stayed at Sensatorri last year and thought it would be the same standard as same rating but it wasn't. It is a lovely family hotel, lovely people and relaxed but only for a weeks holiday for us. Thank you to all the staff who work so very hard!

I went to the Dream Gran Castillo with my wife and 2 sons during the last week of January 2012. We spent 7 nights (all inclusive!) and it was a very pleasant experience (we all loved it!).
The room we had was a family room; it was huge and had a sliding door so that our older son who was 3½ at the time could go to sleep whilst my wife and I could stay up for a while. The rooms were immaculate and were cleaned daily. After this room, we will find it difficult to stay elsewhere if the rooms are not of a similar arrangement.
The food and drink was great and if you wanted to you could eat and drink all day!
I loved that there were heated pools as both of my sons had a chance to go into the water. It was the first time our 2½ month old boy had gone into a pool; he smiled with joy. One pool in particular was very child friendly as it allowed kids to walk straight in without any steps (it was on a slight incline). Our boy loved the sand area nearby where he played away happily for ages. There was also a mini club and mini disco which he also loved very much.
We thought the staff were excellent, they were very friendly and always found time to have a laugh with the kids. They were very thoughtful in that they always remembered where we sat and arranged our table in the restaurant as we liked it e.g. child seat in place before we arrived etc.
There was a chef there called Abdullah, he was great! He would come out amongst the diners to check that all was well, he once came in with a large birthday cake for a guest and sang happy birthday to her. He always had a kind word for everyone.
I certainly will be coming back in the future and would recommend this hotel to any one. A truly memorable stay.
Many Thanks to the staff at the Dream Gran Castillo!

We stayed in the Dream Gran Castillo in February 2012. Not much point in going over in detail what others have already said, but a few points I thought I'd mention.

A nice touch was the porter collecting our bags from the transfer bus, and then the choice of welcome drink on arrival.  Before we arrived I'd mentioned it was our anniversary, and requested a good view. Not only did we get a great view, but also a few surprises in the room when we arrived. Although it was all included it was still a very nice touch, and completely unexpected.

The food is plentiful and varied, and I didn't notice anything to be cold. The show chefs are great and really welcome you into the restaurant and the international brands of alcohol add to the quality of the all inclusive package.

We ate in the Italian twice - as people have already mentioned - you can visit as many times as you wish -and thought the food was of really good standard. Make sure you sit in the outer building - so that you're away from the canteen atmosphere.

The pool bar is good with all the drinks under the sun available. However the snack food needs to be refreshed more - it does get cold. That being said - just have a quick word with the bar staff who will order more within 10 minutes.

The weather wasn't great for a few days of the holiday, so we visited the on site spa. The free entrance to the thermal circuit is great - complete with foot pools and Turkish sauna. We also had a massage, which was reasonably priced and very good.

The entertainment is generally good - though there was one night with audience participation which was disappointing. I would highly recommend the African night and the Motown  night, and the banana cocktail available at the bar!

The hotel is at the end of the Playa Blanca resort - but only 20 mins from Marina Rubicon (visit on a Wednesday or Saturday for a great local market), and a further 20 mins to the centre of Playa Blanca for bars and restaurants. In the other direction you can visit the Papagayo beaches, which are untouched and well worth the 20 min walk.

A really good hotel, with a staff that goes the extra distance to make the stay memorable. A few nice touches made the stay extra special, which means we'd certainly return again in the future.

Room Tip: Most rooms seem to have some view of the sea. Pay an extra 40€ a day for full view.

We stayed last week and had a very relaxing time. The staff are exceptional and went out of their way to assist. We were given a room in the other side of the hotel, when we said it was too far from all the buzz and the rest of our party, they moved us rooms the next day. The area is very quiet but a 5euro taxi run will take you to the resort of Playa Blanca. The sports bar is very small with not many comfy seats! The disco bar is good fun. The music is fab. We were all inclusive basis and the food was always of a very high standard. There was plenty of variety also. A violinist played at breakfast on two of the mornings. A lovely touch. All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a quiet holiday. Ask to stay in the main part of the hotel though! Enjoy!

We try to do an all inclusive once a year and chose Lanzarote in our search for sun. Unfortunately it didn't co-operate the week we were there so we made do with some nice walks and the all inclusive element of the hotel.
The free underground parking is a bonus as is the free wifi in the Reception area. The team at Reception are not the best but the porter who took our bags was a great ambassador and smiled all week.
The room 'Junior Suite with Sea View' was very spacious with lots of storage. The bed was OK and the bathroom excellent. The view was worth the extra but my advice is to go for the top floor so you can't hear the people above you. There could have been more electrical plugs in the room but that is a small matter. The beds were made and the towels changed daily.
The all inclusive drinks were excellent with, as other people have stated, branded spirits and very drinkable wine with dinner. The White and the Rose were very pleasant, we didn't try the red. The Cava was also very good so no complaints on that front.
The evening entertainment varied, some good outside acts and the entertainment team did try their best but their strength is dancing and that is what they should stick to in the evening.
The food was OK. Breakfasts were no great shakes but there was an omelette station and some salad choices. The smoked salmon the days it was on for breakfast was very nice, accompanied by Cava.
There is a wide variety of buffet food at lunchtime and during the evening but it didn't quite hit the mark. We tended to have salads as a starter and then stick to the freshly grilled fish which was varied and excellent. The pre-prepared meals were not hot enough which rather put me off.
We chose to eat on the terrace under the heaters which was far more atmospheric with dim lighting and less people. The restaurant itself had very bright lights and seemed more like a cafeteria. One problem that needs resolving is the fact that the restaurant often didn't open until 15 minutes after the advertised time for the second sitting which meant that people who had dressed up for the evening were queueing up in the cold.
We ate at the oriental restaurant one night and that was OK, limited menu but pleasant Thai food.
We did face a problem that wasn't resolved during the week but the management tried their best to resolve it once we had left and did this successfully, so full marks for that.
We were rather taken aback by the number of families that arrived with very young children and as an older couple, that would put us off returning but each to their own.
As a value for money week on all inclusive with an excellent room and a range of food with as much to drink as you want, this is a good option, particularly if you have children.
The hotel was probably about half full the week we were there and the queue for drinks was never a problem. I am not sure whether it would be the same in the summer.
One day trip we took was to the volcano and it was fascinating. Also, the walk from the hotel via the marina to Playa Blanca was well worth doing.
If the sun had shone a bit more it may have given a slightly different slant but to sum up: A pleasant hotel with very nice accommodation with OK food and OK entertainment, very good drinks, free parking and wifi and generally, good value for money. It was fine!

Room Tip: Go for the top floor so you can't hear the people above you on the tiled floors.

We had a good stay, nothing to complain about really- but nothing impressed us. The food was great, but tasted the same all week, the room was clean and the staff medium-friendly. If you asked something they helped you and sometimes even put on a smile after the answer. But that little extra that we were after never a
occured.

We also felt very sorry for the entertainment team who seemed to be working almost all day long.

This is a good place for a large family but would not recommend it to a couple on a romantic trip!
