We spent a weekend at the cottage together with our grown up son. It was cosy but we managed and just loved the views and the close proximity to the hiking trails. We cycled the trail and took the train to Waihi. The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. We would definitely recommend it.
Karangahake Gold'n Views Cottage
Australian couple – mid 60's with own transport.
The cottage is located on a residential size block at the rear of the owner's dwelling. The setup is such that you have privacy from the owners. The owners were very pleasant, always approachable, but not intrusive.
The cottage is a rectangular building approximately 10 metres X 4 metres. It also has an attached veranda, with two chairs and a small table, from which there are beautiful views across the valley.
There is one bedroom with a queen sized bed, sitting room with kitchenette and a bathroom/toilet. The shower and toilet have railings to provide assistance to people with mobility issues. There are two couches in the sitting room, one of which converts into a additional bedding.
The kitchenette incorporates two electric hotplates, microwave oven, bar fridge, toaster and kettle along with plenty of cuttlery, crockery and pots and pans. There is no convential oven but there is a large electric frypan, with cover, and a hooded B-B-Q, that can be used for roasting or heating of food.
The cottage sleeps four but I would suggest that the four would be a couple and two young children. There were only the two of us and we used one of the couches as a repository for our suitcases.
The cottage was clean, the shower was hot, with good presure, and the toilet flushed well. The bed was comfortable and there were plenty of additional pillows and blankets.
There were no "off" smells anywhere in the accommodation.
TV had a good picture, the WIFI was fast and reliable and the reverse cycle air-conditioning was a very much appreciated in the heat-wave that we experienced during our stay.
Iron, ironing board, hair-dryer, high-chair, fold-up cot, vacume cleaner and clothes airer are provided. There is no washing machine or dish-washer.
We based ourselves in the cottage for six nights and wagon-wheeled out into the surrounding country-side. The Coromandel Peninsular and Rotorua were easily accessible. We also hiked several of the trails in the Karangahake Gorge.
