We stayed at the cottage which was not a lot more expencive than the room. The cottage is tidy and spacious. It has 2 beds and sleeps up to 3 people. This selfcontained cottage also has a kitchen area with everithing you may need and a living area with leather sofa, armchair, coffee table and a big flatscreen TV. There's a place to park a car in front of the cottage. Backing on to the river the cottage overlooks a sweet flowering garden. We saw Tui birds from the porch.
We loved the privacy of the cottage backing on to the river. But we've also spent some time in the shared lounge and enjoyed an evening at the fireplace together with other guests.

The Sportsmans Lodge are good at what they do.

You get your own bed, your own room, and your own toilet and your own shower. Everything else is shared. As long as you're fine with this, the Sportsmans Lodge is very nice.

It is not without reason that most of the other guests we spoke with were returning customers.

It is in an ideal spot to explore the Tongariro national park, or fish or hunt in the area. If you are not too sensitive when sleeping (it is very loud between the rooms, and people walk right outside your window and door), you will find this a good priced bed and a clean shared kitchen.

And even if their offer sounds like a sligthly too simple standard for you, staying here _might_ be worth it for another reason - the owner has a really impressive array of suggestions for activities. We wanted to "experience and photograph Tongariro and Taupo" and she had many really good suggestions for the best ways to do just that.

The only real drawbacks for us were that it was as loud as it was, and that you needed to go to the shared kitchen to make a cup of evening tea.

The sportsmans lodge is located close to the river and lake which makes it an ideal place to stay for fishing trips. We didn't go fishing but for the nearby national park; the outside storage and facilities make the lodge an ideal place for hikers and skiers.
The rooms are small but very nice and tidy, the shared kitchen is the cleanest shared kitchen that I have ever seen.
The owners are super friendly and helpful,we absolutely enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at the lodge for just one evening en route to Auckland and simply wanted somewhere simple & quiet to stop off. The Lodge provided just that: cabins were small but very tidy, with showers & sinks having obviously been recently refurbished to a good standard (bearing in mind the size of the rooms). A large shared kitchen and lounge was available, with plenty of utensils & cooking space in the former, and TV / pool table / reading books in the latter.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a romantic getaway style place, but I don't think you'd be staying at the Lodge for this. If you're stopping off for the fishing, or to see Tongariro / do a day or two's hiking, it offers a very good value few-frills motel style option. Hosts were pleasant & helpful.

Inexpensive, quiet and riverside accomodation is a good summary for what you get. The lodge (a self contained cottage) is nice, renovated, you can play billards (or 8 pool ?).
Large shared kitchen with various fridges and furnesses.
If you wish to check the area for an excursion, if you wish to do the Tongariro Crossing, then ask your host Betty : she knows everything about the surroundings, checks the weather forecasts.
If you are a fisher : then you are in paradise : there is a fish cleaning facility, fishing guides are available and you are alongside the river ! Furthermore Turangi is a good value place considering the touristic neighbourhood (Lake Taupo, Lake Rotoaira, Tongariro crossing, etc ...)

We, being 8, stayed 2 nights with Doug and Betty at their special accomodation in Turangi. Bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean and welcoming. The shared dinning room had everything one could want and was spotless. The Lodge room was just what was needed to relax in and the photos on the walls showed of the interest that Doug and Betty took of their guests. A great place to stay,

Stayed here in transit for 1 night. Have been here before years ago. Reminded me what a fantastic place it is. Cosy and good location. Rooms been renovated and immaculately clean. Great place for socialising with other people in the communal kitchen/lounge.
