5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 November 2011

We came across this hotel when looking to tour the Alentejo region. Apart from the difficulty in finding the hotel (directions should be trusted even if it doesn't seem right) we had a marvelous time. If its peace and seclusion you want then this is for you. If its pampering and attention then choose somewhere else. Rural Portugal experience, we loved it.

We've stayed for a week at Monte do Carmo, and coming from another resort, a comparison quickly occurred : Time was just passing very slow … awesome. So quite, so fresh, even with almost 38 degrees, and so relaxing that we just loved it. The pool has its issues, some like it others don't (maybe swimming with frogs it's not their ideal), but for us it was ... different, only that. The staff was very helpful to whatever we needed or requested, we never heard a "No" or "Can't". I loved fishing Bass in the private dam that existed inside the huge amount of land, which surrounded the Hotel. A very nice and relaxing place to stay and enjoy some peace.

Room Tip: A suite is worth the price, and please check the rates at a Booking site, because prices are often l...

This hotel is in a really unique setting and a great option for staying in the Evora area -- it's not far from the city, yet you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere - in a really nice way. The drive up, through the cork groves, past all the pigs, was great. The grounds are really lovely to walk around in. And just the overall atmosphere was very cool. The rooms are nothing fancy though - well appointed/nice design, but very basic. No where really to sit except on the bed and the window was quite small. Things seemed a little bit run down. It was January, but the biopool looked a bit scary. I like swimming in lakes and ponds, but this looked unhelathy. I wouldn't choose this hotel if you're looking for a nice place to swim. Again, it was January - not sure what it looks like in summer. Overall - a great find and value for the price. Just nothing fancy.

The hotel is located in the city of Azaruja, 28 km away from Evora.
The main thing is the silence and the field.
The hotel has all the infrastructure, including the internet (wifi).
An ideal place for those who need rest.
There is a chapel (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) inside the hotel.
A small sign indicates the direction of the hotel.
Be careful not to enter the dirt road to right, it will not give anything.
I do not recommend arriving the night, the first time.

This hotel is a little away from Azaruja and is accessible via a dirt road. Formerly an hermitage that was converted into a hotel. Very beautiful and peaceful place. It has a biological pool that we did not try. Rooms in good condition and quite spacious.

This excelent hotel includes the old houses were pilgrims stayed in Lady of Carmo annual pilgrimage. Nicely rebuilt. The church is very pretty, can be visited (just ask in the reception) and features several very old ex-votos (wood paintings relayed to miracles attributed to the Lady of Carmo).
I stayed in a large suite, and I booked through the hotel site. Later I found that it would be cheaper to book through Bookings.com or Hotels.com ! I should have known better.
Large room and wc, very nice modern decoration, very good linen and toiletries. It lacks a minibar, tough …. But the breakfast is excellent.
Can be difficult to find for a foreigner, because one must follow the church signs, as there are no hotel signs.

We stayed at 10 hotels in Portugal and this was one of our more interesting destinations. We planned to stay in Evora for 2 nights, but after reading about various hotels, learned about this place which sounded interesting. We found a package on the website which offered an upgraded room, meal and wine tasting.

This was by far the hardest to find hotel but a good value. The hotel was a bit farther from Evora (18km) than we had anticipated but the oddest part was trying to find it. Signage for various hotels had been excellent so we expected to find directions off the main route. Failing that, we took the turnoff into the town where the hotel was located. After driving around we arrived in a gravel parking lot at the end of the town with only a sign for a church Monte do Carmo. We drove a bit down the dirt road in the direction of the church and then decided to turn back. We flagged down a resident, showed them the name of the hotel (he only spoke Portugese, we only spoke English) and he directed us back towards the gravel lot/dirt road. We concluded that he must have thought that we wanted the church, since the names sounded similar and tried another resident. Same result. After driving 2km down the road we came to the hotel/church.

The young woman in reception was very friendly and spoke excellent English. We hadn't been sure what the included mean would be (lunch, dinner, etc) and were surprised when she handed us a menu and told us to order now (!) and that we could have as much as we liked. We opted for two shrimp and mushroom appetizer (the best item on the menu), two pastas with vegetables (overcooked) and one lamb chop entree. We subsequently ordered two deserts and coffee. We also had a bottle of wine.

The price for the 2 nights, which they honored was 169E for 2 people. Turns out there was a mistake on the website and it should have been about 219E plus 5E each for the wine tasting (which I would recommend skipping).

The hotel was described as having an ecopool. Turns out you swim with tadpoles. While I was somewhat skeptical at first, it was quite hot and I had a lovely time cooling off with the amphibians and fish.

I really enjoyed this property. We had a great room with high ceilings in an out of the way location. Not for everybody, but if you are looking for something different, you may be very please.
