This is our second time at this hotel. The location is wonderful and the local beaches are beautiful. We returned because we really enjoyed our time there 9 years ago. The hotel is very good with good amenities and we again enjoyed our stay this time. The restaurant provides good quality food.Overall there is a somewhat lack of atmosphere and the staff are not the friendliest. Queueing (or lack of it!) at reception can be a challenge worth avoiding as most customers just jump in front of each other.

Room Tip: Get a room with a good sea view

Fantastic hotel. Food outstanding, bedrooms clean and tidy, poolside immaculate and excellent pool. Staff very friendly ad welcoming. All inclusive ok not a big fan to be honest but it did not matter as we had gone to relax. The food made up for the poor drink choices! Such as red wine being served chilled.
The beach was amazing and we even had the world wind surfing and kitesurfing competition going on right outside the hotel for a week.

Room Tip: Join H10 and email the hotel.

Once again a 4 star hotel that doesn´t quite earn it´s rating! Rooms in general are large and clean, with sea views. The ceiling in the entrance to our room was warped, gave a negative impression on arrival, an easy fix, but appeared to have been that way for a while. Having said that our toilet flush broke and was fixed very fast as soon as we reported it. Appeared you had to pay to use the fridge, even without it being stocked as a minibar! Breakfast buffet very good, evening meal slightly limited (we only stayed 5 nights), fantastic terrace with sea views in the restaurant. Drinks for AI guests seemed to be watered down, wine/sangria not really drinkable. If you are not AI, could be a problem finding an alternative place to eat, unless you have a hire car, as everything is quite a walk away, except for a very good, but quite expensive restaurant opposite. No problem getting a sunbed round the pool, just beware it is nearly always very windy in Costa Calma and the pool area isn´t very sheltered. There is an indoor pool, but although it is supposed to be a ¨relax¨ zone, was full of children all the time. Mainly German guests, some Spanish French and Italian, very few Brits: ideal location for windsurfing holidays.

We've been to the other Canary islands before but definitely found this better for the clean sandy beaches (safe for children) and relaxation, the hotel is in a good location for water sports and with great views across the coast.
H10 was a natural choice as we are club cardholders and Playa Esmeralda is a really nice hotel with great staff. We visited the H10 Tindaya nearby and were really pleased that Tripadvisor reviews had guided us to choose the Playa Esmeralda. Restaurant buffet food was always plentiful and a good choice on offer. Rooms, hotel, pool area and grounds were always very clean.
We arranged hire car for a week, which was a little more than the optional airport transfer charge. This gave us more freedom to explore and independence for lunches as half board is our preference and the hotel is about 20 minutes walk to Costa Calma centre.
We really enjoyed the relaxation and plan to return again soon.

Room Tip: Suites with a sea view are excellent

My views are similar to other recent reviews -
Guests are 90% German, 5% French and we heard few English voices during our stay, but that suited us fine.
Location was both good and bad - excellent for the lovely beach and clear sea for swimming in, but the hotel is at the absolute end of the resort and has nothing close by. For this reason I recommend staying all inclusive. Yes the beach had nudists, but they were well outnumbered by textiles (don't go if you feel strongly about it).
The rooms are a good size, but some of the balconies get little sun due to the concrete overhang from the rooms above (request top floor). Soundproofing not the best - toilet flushing, the usual scraping of chairs on the tiled floors and trolleys along the corridors could all be heard. If you have mobility problems, request the main building, as the outlying rooms are a short walk away down a gentle slope. The hotel has lots of steps if you like to keep active, but there are lifts.
Service was generally good and English was spoken by the mainly German reception staff.
Food was good - ample choice including the chef's freshly cooked dishes. Restaurant can be busy, but we chose to eat outside of the peak times.
Plenty of sunbeds on the uncrowded pool area. Also an indoor pool, gym, sauna and steam room all free of charge. Massages can be booked (chargeable). Pool towels available (€15 deposit each) and can be exchanged by the lifeguard between 9 and 1.
The entertainment was poor - Sunday night main event was Bingo! but a good Flamenco/Canarian dance act stopped it being a total disaster.
All in all, we had an enjoyable stay here. It is an ideal choice if you want somewhere quiet, with a nice beach and don't want lots of British guests.

We stayed here at the end of March and it was a lovely stay, be warned though, the island is really windy and this hotel location is no exception. Firstly the transfer is about 1 hour from the airport which goes fairly quickly. The hotel is in a great location although access to the beach is down quite a few steps and if its really windy you cant sunbathe as sand blows everywhere. The hotel caters about 80% German, 10% british and 10% everyone else, I liked this as there were no whinging brits complaining about anything they could...a nice change. The reception area is big and spacious and with great views of the beach, all staff are friendly and helpful and will help you whenever they can. The bedrooms are spacious and clean, huge beds and all the necessary bits, you do have to pay for your safe and the fridge is locked (again a fee is charged). If you want a lie in you wont get one as the cleaning trolleys make so much noise it he morning and bash into anything possible. Food is lovely, its all buffet with a few things made for you (eggs, carvery etc) and you can have something different every day. Meal times can be busy so be prepared. The pool areas are large enough for everyone to have a sunbed, you cant hold one with a towel as the hotel are really strict on that (bring you own towels as you have to hire them). There is an indoor pool which was nice and there is a spa but didnt use it. Evening entertainment was very limited but it was low season so I'm sure it gets better in high season. There is a games room, internet cafe, mini golf (a bit sad) and other day activities to do, also free WIFI in the reception area which some people will find really useful All in all a lovely holiday and would definitely return to this hotel. My only (and scary) point would be the beach, its a lovely beach but it doubles as a nudist beach and there are some things in life that should never be seen - you can use your imagination on this one but its not pretty!!

massive hotel, more like a complex. very clean, grounds etc very well looked after. rooms huge, with large comfy beds.food was excellent, considering the numbers that must be catered for.
public transport not good.nothing to do outside of hotel.stout walking shoes/sandals needed to negotiate the dirt tracks to beach, and to centre of "resort".
95%guests are German. in fact the whole area of Costa Calma is geared towards the Germans. Nudity on the public beaches was not acceptable, and in my opinion should be confined to designated beach.
all in all, if you just want a beach holiday sunbathing, reading and generally relaxing, and doing little else, then its an ideal spot. the countryside is NOT pretty, in fact very bleak.however, the wonderful beaches are just incredible.

Room Tip: stout walking shoes, broad minded re nudity
