Review of Auroville Bakery

Auroville Bakery
Ranked #1 of 7 Bakeries in Pondicherry
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$0 - US$20
Cuisines: French
Description: When you are far away from home, you miss certain things. Auroville, in the middle of the eastern world, is full of people from the western world. As rice is the most common food in Asia, Europeans and Americans hardly find their favourites: bread and good cake. Fortunately Auroville is not a blank spot on the culinary map, as it has the most delightful bakery in the whole area. Here your cravings for all kinds of bread and pastry can be fulfilled; sweet dreams come true. But how did it all start? Meanwhile, in the main bakery, the first non-Aurovilian workers were employed. They also had to learn from zero. The working circumstances were bad. One oven under a keet roof, no walls, wooden fences, a frame for a second oven, but the metal parts had to be shared. And, of course, termites and rats. "Professionals shook their heads. We had to move the bread up to 3 times from oven to oven, from here to there. A wonder it was eatable", says Otto. Together with Jean-Denis he kept the operation going, and with the increasing income from cookies and biscuits plus a loan from Aurelec they were able to build a new Auroville Bakery in Douceur, where it is still situated.

The bakery serves a great selection of croissants, quiches and breads and at the same time traditional South-Indian breakfast, which makes it a perfect location to go to when you are with a mixed group. I did not like the place for slow service but this time they were surprisingly quick.
This is also one of the “must-visit” places.

There are places in Pondicherry, where you make countless trips and are still left wanting for more. Auroville Bakery and Restaurant, which is located right at the entrance of this peaceful township is surely the face of it. Living up to the sanctity of Auroville, Auroville Bakery and Restaurant offers the same level of peace and happiness from the food (bread) that they make and serve.

Our breakfast on the second day of the trip was the best meal that we had and we craved for more even after leaving the place. The basic looking café welcomes you with the most amazing display of baked goods, right from daily breads, quiches, croissants and more. We picked up a plain butter, and chocolate croissant on the go, only to realize that they also have a cozy open to air restaurant at the back. The restaurant is engulfed around trees and shrubs and have a simple seating structure. The menu behind the ordering counter is hand written and runs quite long and appetizing. With the croissants already in the bag, we called for a mushroom omelette, escallops chicken sandwich and a generous cup of cappuccino.

To start with, theirs is the best bread that we have had so far. It’s not surprising though, because their bread comes fresh right through the next door from their aromatic bakery. The omelette looked simple to the eyes, but it was fluffy, with a generous helping of mushrooms and two slices of perfectly toasted bread. But, what really took our palates to another level, was their escallops chicken sandwich. A thick slice of fried chicken covered with fresh vegetables and greens, and packed inside the goodness of a brown bread. It couldn’t have been a better start to the day. We did eat the croissants a little later in the day, but even then they were flaky, packed with flavors and tasted fresh out of the oven. The piping hot cappuccino helped us to wash down our amazing breakfast, making sure that we were left rejuvenated, instead of bloated.

We did manage to return a few days later, only to find it closed earlier, owing to the Republic day. There’s no doubt in our mind that Auroville bakery will always feature in our list, whenever we head south to Pondy.

I went by after having heard a lot about this place, and not only is their food delicious, but the quantity is so filling! I ordered one of the sandwiches (in the cafe behind the Bakery) and almost didn't manage to finish it!
It's mostly self-service, but with a very helpful staff, and a great atmosphere.

One of the best bakeries I have ever been to. Such amazing quality of products they make. You prefer Gluten Free and this is the best place to go. I wanted to buy some more the next day but unfortunately, it was closed due to a Sunday. Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend this place. Just step in once and you will keep coming back.

A bakery you must experience, if you are staying in and around Auroville. You had to experience omelette..which is a meal by itself. If you are visiting the place for quick breakfast, give a thought.. it takes minimum 30 mins to serve.
