I just showed up on my bike and needed a place to stay and this seemed to be a nice place. Checked into the smaller room as i was alone and i got a great sweet small room with a huge loo. I was quite kicked. The bar is great and so is the food on the menu. I spent a few nights and moved on to Kodaikanal and actually stopped in Pondicherry on the way back and stayed at the same place but unfortunately did not get the same room. I did mention something about not having a tv and they shifted one into my room. It was peaceful and quiet and a great place.

Look up the climate in Chennai/Pondicherry and the chances are you´ll find the words hot, wet and humid. Not surprisingly then, this old museum of an hotel is damp, musty and full of mould. On top of that, the TV reception is partially unacceptable and the AC is unreliable. The rooms on the ground floor are particularly bad as they do not have any direct sunlight. The musty stench is atrocious. Besides, the bathrooms do not meet the minimum standards for a hotel in this price category. Having complained to the manager about one of the downstairs rooms (2,800 rupees), we were upgraded to a room on the first (GB) (second US) floor (3,200 rupees) at no extra charge. At least this room had windows offering plenty of natural light and it was possible to air the musty room. Nevertheless, there was mould on the beams and the mattress stank and kept us awake at night. The hotel room door had quite wide gaps in it, offering a great view to any peeping toms passing by. The TV worked most of the time, but there were frequent interruptions of the signal. Complaints didn´t help as it was Christmas time and the TV engineer didn´t seem to care, apparently. The manager and his staff are so fed up receiving complaints, they asked me to lay it on the line with the owner, Mr. Menet. Just before I left, I told him on the phone what I thought of the place and didn´t pull any punches. His excuse was the heavy rain, but if he doesn´t sort out the damp problems, he won´t have any guests staying at all in future. Anyway, what about the TV and AC ??
For five nights, we paid 14,000 rupees in advance, and to be fair, Mr Menet granted us a refund of 10 percent.. The attached photos clearly show the state of the place - judge for yourself whether you really want to stay there before a makeover costing hundreds of thousands of dollars is finally carried out. By the way, there´s a good French restaurant called "Le Cub" in the grounds of the hotel, but its management is completely separate from the hotel´s; they merely rent the premises.

Pondicherry is a great experience - anyone would love Pondi....

I was originally booked into another hotel far away from the sea front and it looked ok (but the rooms were a different matter) - so I came to the “Hotel Ponidcherry” via the Lonely Planet guide book. (The price was 2,800 Indian Rupees a day, which I thought rather high).

I must say my stay was most enjoyable - the hotel has a great position and Rue Damas runs parallel with the sea promenade – a really great place to stroll at night with the locals…. and the police, looking cute in their smart uniforms and French Police hats.

My hotel room was big and spacious - air con was good and there was a Punka fan as well - (Pondi gets seriously hot) - my bed was large, well furnished and the bathroom practical - yes no shower curtain, but I did not think one was needed... what with the heat and humidity of this place, there needs to be as little clutter as possible.

The hotel does not serve breakfast, but a good coffee shop can be found around the corner and you can have breakfast overlooking the ocean - the hotel does seem a bit confused about guest’s requirements for meals - but finding somewhere nice is not difficult. - Check out the Lonely Planet guide for recommendations.

There is a wonderful local restaurant serving great Indian food and populated by a few tourists and lots of locals... I cannot remember it’s name but anyone will know it.... - it serves really wonderful Indian food... Pondi is famous for it's food... and there are lots of good restaurants around.

There is a restaurant within the hotel grounds and I found the food and staff nice there - they serve only lunch and dinner and a beer (they have a full bar) to outside and hotel guests when required the restaurant look popular when ever I was there !

There is also a great massage centre off the side of the hotel, where one can relax after the heat of the day and be sublimely subdues into a perfect state of bliss - the place is a great find really and my masseur was just perfect. Those Indian guys know how to give a great massage. Its’ a girls for girls and guys for guys place I think but I am sure that they swap around…!

Finally if your are going to Pondi, check out the gift shot in the Hotel de La Orient - here are some great things to be had there.

In fact Pondi is very good for shopping where anything can be purchased - I made a bee line for a shop selling lovely linen shirts, one street away form the main market... do your shopping early in the morning or late afternoon… the heat of the day is a time to snooze and slumber and drink cold beer.

Pondi is a place where anyone would be happy to visit. The atmosphere of the old town is amazing and most of the streets are tree lined, making walking a pleasant experience… there is loads to see just strolling around, and the there is loads of French colonial style to make you feel just in love – with life.

This hotel looked great online and travellers' reviews were appealing. However, when we arrived the prices were a lot higher than advertised and the only room available for a reasonable price was very small and had a funny small about it. But having travelled in India for 4 weeks before, we could manage that, we thought.
At night someone tried to open our door twice (the room across the reception of the ground floor) and we heard scratching noises. When we went outside the room, there was no one to be seen, the guy behind the reception said he saw nobody.. Spooky.
And then, the damp. The walls were wet, drops of water were dripping off the walls and the window. The small became even worse with the AC turned on, so we switched it off. After one hot ,damp and somewhat spooky night we decided to move. The receptionist tried to give us a hard time but with my partner's asthma it was for health reasons alone not good to stay here.
Don't go here, there are many other great boutique hotels at the same rate!!!!
