“My favourite mountain retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2012

Basic facts about Jilling Estate: a roughly 100 acre property a few kilometres from Bhimtal. The estate's woods, and the general area around it, are pristine. The estate has only 4 cottages that are let out for a rent. The closest road is about 2km down the mountain slope, and it's a roughly 45-60 min steep hike up to the property.

And now for my opinion: this is my favourite retreat in the mountains of North India. Here's what it allows me to do: spend lots of time with myself, while being reasonably close to civilization, enjoy the mountain forests in their unspoilt condition, and go for great hikes, get a pleasant, comfortable place to stay in, get good, home-cooked food, and all this at a very reasonable price. This is not a place for drinking parties with your friends - this is a place to relish quietness - by yourself and

Been here twice, and plan to go back regularly. Strongly recommend for spending time with oneself.

If you are ever visiting Uttrakhand, Jilling should be amongst the top of your list .... the place is about 2 hrs from kathgodam station .. located at 7000 mts from sea level , it has just four cottages in 700 odd acres .. the owner captain steve and his family are very friendly and good company .... the staff is also very courteous and make you feel at home .... the cottages are not very large but each one is equipped with books, magazines, kitchen etc ..... The food cooked by the staff is amazing and stories of Catain are even better ..... do not forget the jungle safari .. but always take someone with you as you might get lost easily ....

the only issue is with the steep climb to the cottages ... it is about 1 hour trekk and very difficult for average cuty goer .. even though capatin arranges for horse (rather mule) to ferrey passengers and luggage, but that is not complimentary ... so keep ample money for taxi to and from jilling, horse ride etc .. 3600 per couple including food is reasonable price ... but do not expect luxury ... infact expect some warm and homely atmosphere and lotsof wild animals ...
Also very difficult to get mobile connections there so tel your family in advance not to worry

Good place to spend Time in Solace.
The estate is too good. Intially we had planned to spend 2 nights but we liked it so much that we extended the stay by another day.
Food is just Like home cooked.
Staff is very friendly.
You feel like home away from Home

Spent 6 nights at Jilling estate by myself. A thoroughly different experience from the usual resort life. Its about a 1 hour climb up a nice track (and a lovely guide called Ramlalji) upto the family home and cottages. Nanda Devi was elusive for all other than day 1. But the views and walks are lovely. If you like solitude, books to read, a lovely family that shares their home and love of animals/ forests with you and well cooked home like Indian food, this is the place for you. Away from the tourists, groups and pollution that is so often seen in hill stations in India. On the negative side , bathrooms are basic, no hot running water, and there is often electricity cuts.
